Objectives: The purpose of the study was to investigate the subjective oral health status, oral health promotion behaviors, and related factors in the university students in Jeonnam. Methods: A self-reported survey was completed by 480 university students in Jeonnam from June 1 to 15, 2016 based on convenience sampling. The questionnaires consisted of general characteristics of the subjects, subjective oral health status, and oral health promotion behaviors. The collected data were analyzed by frequency analysis, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA and multiple regression analysis among others. Results: The average of subjective oral health status was 3.36 and the oral health promotion behavior was 2.87. It was shown to have influence upon the oral health promotion behaviors in the more the use of oral care products, in the better the oral health condition, in the more dental visit experience, in the more you do not drink, and in the more experience in oral health education. Conclusions: To improve the oral health in the university students, interest, knowledge, attitudes, and behavior in the oral health should be changed through development of oral health education programs. Also, efforts to develop curriculum and establish the university policies will be necessary so as for the university students to have responsibility for general health care including oral health in the universities.
Objectives: This study was conducted to identify the oral hygiene status of children and adolescents from North Korean (NK) refugee families residing in South Korea (SK) and to find ways to improve it. Methods: This study examined 88 children in NK refugee families. Their oral hygiene ability were estimated using the Patient Hygiene Performance (PHP)-index for children. The Independent Samples t-test and one-way ANOVA were conducted on the oral hygiene status according to the characteristics of children of NK refugees, and covariance analysis was conducted by controlling for significant variables in the simple analysis. Statistical significance levels were set at than p<0.05. Results: The overall PHP-index of normal, poor, and severe poor were 14.8%, 5.7%, and 79.5%, respectively. Adjusted for sex, age, country of birth, duration of settlement, covariance analysis was performed to determine the PHP-index according to oral examination. PHP-index was 3.55±1.56 when the oral examination was conducted and 4.26±0.98 when the oral examination was not conducted; this difference was significantly (p=0.022). Conclusions: Children and from NK refugee families have severely poor oral hygiene. Therefore, education to improve the oral hygiene status is necessary.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to analyze the influence which the professional dental hygiene education has on the knowledge and behavioral change for oral health to the students in the departments of dental hygiene. Methods : 771 students in the first grade and 646 students in the third grade who were attending the departments of dental hygiene from 12 colleges in Korea were surveyed. The self-administered questionnaires were distributed to the students in the colleges during May and asked them to answer the questions and then recovered them on the spot. The collected questionnaires were analyzed by using a SPSS/PC program and the difference of significance depending on the group of the students was tested by Chi-square test or Fisher's exact probability test. Results : In the number of eating snacks by the students during one day, 2-3 times was the highest, irrespectively of the grade. The rate of the students brushing their teeth after snack was higher in the third-grade students(34.8%) than in the first-grade students(20.8%). As the path of acquiring oral health knowledge, all of the first-grade and third-grade students replied that their school classes had impacted them the most. The rate of toothache experience was a higher tendency in third-grade students compared to the first-grade students(p=0.116). The rate of gingival bleeding experience was lower in the third-grade students than in the first-grade students. The rate of oral prophylaxis experience was higher in the third-grade students than in the first-grade students. In the smoking rate, there was lower in the third-grade students than in the first-grade students. The rate of acknowledging smoking hazard to the periodontal health was higher in the third-grade students than in the first-grade students. Conclusions : This study revealed that the third-grade students of dental hygiene departments who were majoring in dental hygiene had a higher perception of oral health than the first-grade students whose the dental hygiene education period was short.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine the knowledge of orthodontic patients about oral health knowledge and their actual oral hygiene care, which affected the oral hygiene of orthodontic patients. It's specifically meant to provide information on the prevention of the possible side effects of orthodontic treatment and the promotion of the oral health of orthodontic patients. Methods : This study were 227 orthodontic patients of dental clinics specialized in orthodontics. The collected data were analyzed by the statistical package SPSS WIN 18.0. Results : 1.As for Oral health knowledge, they had the best knowledge about smoking and dental checkup among the subfactors of oral health knowledge. 2. As to actual oral hygiene care, what they did best was doing toothbrushing before sleeping and what they did worst was avoiding eating food injurious to teeth. 3. They scored highest in the right toothbrushing(3.85), the use of oral hygiene supplies(3.62), the prevention of periodontal diseases(3.13) in the subfactors of actual oral hygiene care. They scored lowest in dental checkup and diet(2.99). 4. There were significant differences among the patients in oral health knowledge according to age(F=2.95, p<.05). Those who received another treatment during orthodontic treatment had a better oral health knowledge than the others who didn't, and the gap between the two was statistically significant(t=2.26, p<.05). 5. There were differences among the patients in actual health hygiene care according to gender(t=2.71, p<.01), age(F=4.40, p<.01), educational experiences about oral hygiene care(t=3.06, p<.01) and experience of receiving another treatment during orthodontic treatment(t=2.56, p<.05). 6. There was a positive correlation between oral health knowledge and oral hygiene care(r=.261, p<.001). Conclusions :The above-mentioned findings suggest that more education of diet and toothbrushing should be provided for orthodontic patients to improve their oral health care.
Objectives : The purpose of the study was to provide the development of oral health promotion programs for the college students to improve oral health behavior. Methods : Subjects were 350 college students in Gyeonggi-do and Gangwon-do from March to June, 2011. Except 9 incomplete copies, 341 data were analyzed. Results : 1. The college students got a mean of 4.08 in oral health awareness, and 3.54 in oral health care. 2. The correlation coefficient of the two was 0.618. Higher oral health awareness led to oral health care improvement (p<0.001). 3. Oral health awareness made a 38.1% prediction of oral health care. A rise of one score in oral health awareness was concurrent with a rise of 0.532 score in oral health care. Conclusions : Higher oral health awareness led to oral health care improvement, and that those who received oral health education tended to have higher awareness and care for oral health care.

Objectives: This study involved a non-equivalent control group, pre-test/post-test measurement experiment to evaluate the efficacy of distributing plaque disclosing agents to healthy adults living in South Korea and promoting its self-application. Methods: O'Leary index, PHP index, oral health behavior intention, and oral care satisfaction were used as research tools. A notice was posted on the bulletin board from September 12 to October 15, 2016, to recruit adults aged 20-50 years. Data were analyzed using SPSS Version 22.0, and frequency analysis, Pearson's chi-squared, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), Kruskal-Wallis, and repeated measures ANOVA were performed. Results: The O'Leary index was significantly reduced in the group (p<0.01), and time (p<0.01) after education and width of the decrease had the highest score in the group that received education on plaque disclosing only. They were followed by the group that received education on plaque disclosing and the rolling method, the group that received education on the rolling method alone, and the control group. The PHP index significantly decreased in the group(p<0.01) and time (p<0.01), and the group time (p=0.039) after education, and width of the decrease had the highest score in the group that received education on plaque disclosing and rolling method. They were followed by the group that received education on plaque disclosing alone, the group that received education on the rolling method alone, and the control group. Conclusions: Based on the aforementioned findings, the direct use of plaque disclosing had a marked effect on self-oral care. These results suggest that the self-application of plaque disclosing could be an effective self-care method for improving the oral environment.
Objectives: The purpose of the study was to investigate the carbonated beverage consumption and related factors of dental hygiene students in Gwangju Jeonnam. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 343 dental hygiene students in the Gwangju Jeonnam area from May 17, 2017 to June 1 based on convenience sampling. The questionnaire consisted of general characteristics of the subjects, the frequency of carbonated beverage intake, its degree of impact on oral health, oral care behavior following the intake of carbonated beverages, and the method of intake. Results:There were 293 people (85.4%) who drink carbonated beverages. The intake frequency was an average of 3.9 times a week, and the most frequently consumed beverage was cola with an average of 1.8 times a week. The intake frequency of carbonated beverage was correlated with a higher share of the cost of the beverage in the subject's monthly allowance, a lower intention of ceasing intake of carbonated beverage henceforth, and a lower grade. Conclusions: It is necessary to raise awareness on carbonated beverages through nutrition education concerning beverages including the harmful effects of carbonated beverages and reinforcement of oral health education in regular education courses. In addition, it is considered necessary to refrain from the consumption carbonated beverages by oneself as a preliminary dental hygienist.
Objective : The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of the oral health behavior of oral prophylaxis clients and some residents in a community to their simplified oral environment index. Methods : The subjects in this study were 520 people who had their teeth cleaned in the oral prophylaxis practice lab in the department of dental hygiene at J health college. A survey was conducted from March 23 to June 3, 2010, by way of the self-reported questionnaire. The data materials are analyzed by general characteristics frequency and ratio, the relationship of oral health behavior and sex, age, scaling experience, simplified oral hygiene index $x^{2}$ test analysis. Results : 1. Concerning links between gender and oral health behavior including daily toothbrushing frequency, the largest group of the respondents brushed their teeth three times a day(p<0.05). As to educational experiences on toothbrushing method and the use of oral hygiene supplies, the women had more educational experiences than the men(p<0.05). 2. Regarding connections between age and oral health behavior involving daily toothbrushing frequency, the largest number of the respondents brushed their teeth three times a day in every age group (p <0.001). As for educational experiences on toothbrushing method, those who were in their 50s and up(64.7%) learned about that, and they had more educational experiences with age(p<0.05). As for scaling experiences, the older respondents had their teeth scaled more often (p<0.001). 3. As to relationship between scaling experiences and oral health behavior, there were differences in toothbrushing frequency according to scaling experiences(p <0.05). Regarding educational experiences on toothbrushing method, those who had their teeth cleaned received more toothbrushing education(p<0.001). Concerning smoking, the nonsmokers had more experiences to get their teeth cleaned (p<0.001). 4. As for links between simplified oral environment index and oral health behavior including a time for toothbrushing, the respondents who did toothbrushing after every meal(80.4%) had good simplified oral environment indexes(p<0.05). 5. In regard to relationship between simplified oral environment index and oral health behavior, oral environment index had a positive correlation to the use of oral hygiene supplies( r=0.129**), toothbrushing time(r=0.116**) and educational experiences on toothbrushing method (r=0.099**). Smoking(r=-0.092**) had a negative correlation to that. Conclusion : The above-mentioned findings illustrate that oral health behavior is one of crucial factors to affect oral health status and oral environment care. Therefore oral prophylaxis practice lab visitors should receive education on the right toothbrushing method and the use of oral hygiene supplies to promote their oral health, and an incremental oral health care system that involves regular scaling should be introduced.
Objectives: The purpose of the study was to investigate the mouthguard awareness and educational needs for coping methods of oral and maxillofacial trauma in physical education department students. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 250 male students in gyeonggido and Jeonbuk province from June, to August, 2015. survey was conducted from June to August, 2015. The students were those who played taekwondo, football, and kendo. Except incomplete answers, 229 data were analyzed. The questionnaire consisted of general characteristics of the students, awareness and use of mouthguards, and educational needs for coping methods for oral and maxillofacial injuries. The Cronbach alpha of mouthguard awareness was 0.838, and that of educational needs for coping methods for oral and maxillofacial injuries was 0.843 in the study. Results: Those who wore mouthguards tended to have higher score of awareness and the demand of coping methods for oral and maxillofacial injuries was higher than those who did not. Those who had higher awareness of mouthguards and oral health maintained their good oral health. Conclusions: The mouthguard is very important to protect from the oral and maxillofacial injuries in sports play, it is important to emphasize the mouthguard wearing in the physical education department students.
