Methods: A quasi-experimental, nonequivalent control group pretest-post test design was used. Participants (n=52) received either gauze frozen with normal saline (n=26), or wet gauze (n=26). The subjective thirst level and oral health of the participants were assessed before the intervention, 30 minutes after the first intervention, 30 minutes after the second intervention, and 30 minutes after the third intervention. Results: After oral hygiene was provided twice, the thirst level was improved in patients receiving the gauze frozen with normal saline. After oral hygiene was provided a third time, the thirst level was improved in patients receiving the gauze frozen with normal saline. Conclusion: Gauze frozen with normal saline can be effective for oral hygiene in reducing the thirst level and improving the oral health in nasal surgery patients.

Methods: Data were collected by questionnaire interview method from June 15, 2013 to December 14, 2013. The subjects were elderly over 65 years old in Jeonbuk province. The study instrument was structured questionnaire including general characteristics of the subjects(3 questions), oral health management status(16 questions), Dental Fear Survey(DFS, 9 questions). Cronbach alphas were 0.804 and 0.959 in the study. Higher score of oral health management status showed good oral health care and higher DFS showed higher level of dental fear. Data were analyzed by t-test, one way ANOVA, post-hoc Scheffe test, and Pearson correlation analysis. Higher dental fear was defined below 33.3%. Results: Women tended to have better oral health than male. Women brush their teeth more frequently than male. Most of the elderly answered that it was important to brush teeth for 3 minutes, to use dental floss and to have oral health education(p<0.05). Score of dental fear level was similar in men and women. Those who were above 69 years old tended to have dental fear. Poor oral health condition was closely related to dental fear. Conclusions: The oral care in the elderly showed considerable differences between the groups and affected the dental fear. It is important to implement the nationwide dental care for the elderly in the future.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the practice of oral hygiene behaviors and oral health status of long-term care facility residents and to analyze the factors related to salivary hemoglobin level which can predict active periodontal disease. Methods: From 30th October 2015 to 7th January 2016, a questionnaire was provided to 63 participants and their dental plaque and saliva samples were collected to assess the levels of salivary hemoglobin and dental plaque acidogenicity. In order to analyze the factors related to salivary hemoglobin level, multiple linear regression analysis was performed. Results: Toothbrushing was most frequently performed by the participants themselves (98.4%) and toothbrushing was performed after eating breakfast (81.3%). 68.8% of participants reported brushing their tongue. 35.9% of participants perceived having bad teeth, and 87.5% had high dental caries activity. The percentages of participants with hyposalivation and ${\geq}0.20{\mu}g/ml$ salivary hemoglobin level were 45.3% and 59.4%, respectively. The salivary hemoglobin level was significantly higher in the group in which stimulated salivary flow rate was ${\leq}0.70ml/min$, dental plaque acidogenicity was superior, and perceived having bad teeth (p<0.05). There was also a tendency for the salivary hemoglobin level to increase with age (p<0.05). Conclusions: Oral health status of the long-term care facility residents was still not improved, and the characteristics of salivary volume and dental plaque were important factors affecting salivary hemoglobin level. Therefore, it is necessary to operate an oral hygiene intervention program by oral health professionals in such facilities in order to provide residents with effective oral care aligned with their respective needs. Furthermore, it is necessary for caregivers to complete mandatory oral health education to improve the oral hygiene status of the long-term care facility residents.

Methods: The subjects included military soldiers older than 19 years of age in the Chungnam province. The study instrument was a structured questionnaire evaluating the general characteristics, HPLP, oral health perception, and oral health practice. Data were analyzed using one way analysis of variance (ANOVA), Kruskal-Wallis ANOVA, Pearson correlation, and multiple regression analysis. Results: The HPLP evaluation of the soldiers was 3.39, and the group with the higher HPLP level showed better oral health recognition and oral health practice, with a statistically significant difference. There were differences in oral health perception, tooth brushing practice, and oral health education interest depending on the level of education and stratum of the soldier. The higher the soldier's HPLP, the higher were the oral health perception and oral health practice. The factors affecting the HPLP were oral health perception, tooth brushing practice, and interest in oral health education. Conclusions: After the military discharge, it is necessary to devise ways that will enhance oral health perception and practices that promote good oral health and lifestyle.

A total of 17,433 documents were retrieved by database searching. The final 34 literatures that satisfied the inclusion criteria were selected for analyzing. A content analysis was performed on 34 literatures on the topics of oral health literacy which had been published from 2012 to 2019. Results: Most of the 34 literatures, 23 articles and 11 thesises were descriptive-correlation studies, but there was no intervention study. The participants studied in the selected literatures were mostly adults followed by elderly and other groups including foreigner. More troubling sufficient samples and sampling methods were lacking at the population level. The validation of the used health literacy instruments was not sufficient. Conclusions: The unification of translation terminology for oral health literacy and the standardized instrument to test oral health literacy are needed. And to improve the level of oral health literacy, studies should be conducted using various variables. It is also necessary to develop the oral health education programs that can improve the level of oral health literacy. In the future, meta-analysis on the oral health literacy are needed for cumulating findings and drawing more reliable and general conclusions.

  • The purpose of this research is to increase adults' quality of life by improving oral health. Total 572 people participated in this study in Young-Nam area. Survey research method was used to measure various tools of participants' general index, subjective view of oral health status, oral health knowledge, oral health practice, dietary pattern, OHIP-14, THI, QOL for analyzing the effect on quality of life. The result of the study is summarized as follows; 1. Oral health knowledge has positive effects on oral health practice (0.442), dietary pattern(0.343). Diet has positive effects on OHIP-14(0.187) and OHIP-14 has significant positive effects on THI(0.564). THI also has positive effects on QOL(0.380). But oral health practice index has slight effects on OHIP-14(0.056). 2. Indirect effect indexes on QOL are OHIP-14(0.214), diet(0.040), oral health knowledge(0.019), oral health practice(0.012) listed in order of effect size, and the biggest direct effect on QOL is from THI(0.308). The result of this study shows oral health and total health are important to improve the quality of life. And the knowledge about oral health dietary pattern should be important to improve oral health. But, even with high level of oral health knowledge, the oral health practice is at low level. Health education developing program should be needed. It is required to present basic data which represent adults with national view by extracting groups using sample probability methods as of next task of this study.
