Objectives: The purpose of the study was to investigate the oral health behavior according to perceived oral symptoms in the elderly. Methods: The data were obtained from the 6th Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2013). Data were analyzed by complex sample frequency t test, one-way ANOVA, ${\chi}^2$ test, and general analysis. The questionnaire consisted of general characteristics of the subjects and perceived oral symptoms. Results: Those who had higher education tended to brush teeth regularly. The use of oral hygiene product was also high in higher educated elderly and higher income. Those with good oral health perception showed regular toothbrushing habit. Those with good chewing and mastication used oral hygiene products. Male tended to have regular dental checkup. Those having spouse, higher income, younger age, regular dental checkup had good chewing ability. Poor oral health perception, toothache, and chewing difficulty were the main cause of dental visit (p<0.05). Conclusions: The elderly with poor perceived oral symptoms showed lower level of oral hygiene care. They tended to visit dental clinics only when they had oral symptoms.
The purpose of this study is to provide a set of fundamental data for the oral hygiene education for the elderly as a result of the survey on the oral hygiene and subjective oral health of the elderly in an aged society. For this purpose, 269 elders who dwelled in Gyeongsangbuk-do region were randomly selected in an arbitrary selection process, followed by a survey on their oral hygiene and health. The collected data were coded and processed by using SPSS 15.0 software. As for the analysis of the data, the general characteristics and the basic items concerning the management of the oral health were analyzed for their frequency and percentages, while the general characteristics and the awareness on the oral health were processed with Chi-square validation to show a set of results as follows; Firstly, among the items on the oral health, the satisfaction on the current condition of their oral health was below average. Secondly, concerning the oral hygienic behaviors, the majority of the samples answered that they were brushing their teeth twice a day. And, as for the brushing methods, the largest number of the samples answered that they were brushing their teeth in a 'horizontal direction'. Thirdly, they reported they were having difficulties in getting dental treatments. The implications of this study are that it is necessary to provide sound oral health education to them to correct the inappropriate oral hygienic behaviors.
Objectives : The purpose of this study is to provide basic data to develop health education program, by analyzing the relationship between the oral health behavior intention and self-efficacy in dental hygiene students. Methods : This research was based on self administrated survey conducted by 348 dental hygiene students. The survey was composed of five items of general characteristics, ten items of factor in self-efficacy and seven items of factor in oral health behavior intention. Results : According to general characteristics, students with high grades had higher oral health behavior intention(p<0.05) and students answered that the significance of oral health is very important had higher oral health behavior intention(p<0.05). The level of self-efficacy was separated by high-level(30%), medium-level(40%), and low-level (30%), and the higher self-efficacy was, the higher oral health behavior intention was. Conclusions : By improving dental hygiene student's self-efficacy, it was necessary to promote oral health behavior intention.
The purpose of this study was to reveal analyze the relationship between status of participation in an oral health care program and oral health outcomes among patients in Korea, and to evaluate the results to provide evidence regarding the feasibility of widespread implementation of the program. Patients were designated as either cooperative or non-cooperative with the oral health care program and were assigned to each group accordingly. Modified dental hygiene process (M-DHP) of the oral healthcare program was modified to form the dental hygiene process. The study included 48 patients at a dental clinic in Busan, Korea. Questionnaires were used to collect information on oral health behavior (OHB), clinical examination was used to record bleeding on probing (BOP) and O'Leary index, and phase microscopy was used to identify microorganisms. Differences between groups were evaluated using repeated measures ANOVA. Our results showed that the group cooperative with the oral health care program showed greater improvement in OHB, BOP, and O'Leary index than the non-cooperative group. Second, patient satisfaction with the M-DHP was very high, particularly for content and the friendly nature of the staff. The cooperative group showed greater improvement in oral health than the non-cooperative group for all metrics. Our results suggest that this low-coste program, if implemented, would be actively accepted and utilized in dental clinics.
Objectivs : The purpose of this study is to provide basic data for the use of oral hygiene devices and to improve oral health care continuously by encouraging the use of oral hygiene devices. Methods : The survey was carried out by questionnaire research targeting 395 respondents in metropolitan area in June-August 2009. The collected data is analyzed by statistics program SPSS version 12.0. 1. General characteristics of subjects are analyzed by percentage and descriptive statistics. 2. Recognition about how to use oral hygiene devices, usage of oral hygiene devices, recognition of dental brush usage, Effect after using oral hygiene devices are analyzed by mean difference test(t, F verification). 3. Effect after using oral hygiene devices, relation of oral hygiene devices usage with subjective oral health status, oral hygiene devices usage and participation in education are analyzed by Correlation, Regression analysis. Results : 1. Investigation shows that most oral health devices are rarely used except toothbrush(4.57) in case of the use of oral hygiene devices. 2. In the case of awareness of oral hygiene devices usage, almost everyone knows how to use dental brushes(MEAN 4.16) the most. And the next ones are like these-tooth picks(MEAN 3.38), dental floss(MEAN 3.28), mouth rinse(MEAN 3.24). And they don't know how to use the other oral hygiene devices usage. 3. respondents who use dental floss(${\beta}$=.238, p<.001), interdental brush(${\beta}$=.242, p<.001) and water pik(${\beta}$ =.180, p<.05) recognize that the result and effect after using them are more positive than the others in different case. 4. Respondents who use toothbrush(${\beta}$=.119), dental floss(${\beta}$=.120) and interdental brush(${\beta}$=.136). frequently evaluate their subjective oral health status positively in case of frequency of using oral hygiene devices and subjective oral health status(p<.05). 5. Respondents who use toothbrush and interdental brush properly and frequently, who are older than the others show more concern about participating in education of "How to use oral hygiene devices" than the others(p<.05). Conclusions : In conclusion, to prevent oral disease, the opportunity of participating in education about correct knowledge and proper way should be expanded. And we should contribute to oral health improvement through developing, executing and informing systematic, popular oral health education with active one.
Objectives: The study aimed to investigate the perception and usage of oral hygiene products among patients who visited dental hospitals or clinics. Methods: A questionnaire was provided to a total of 187 patients who visited dental hospitals or clinics in Gyeongnam area. The answers were then statistically analyzed. Results: Interest in oral hygiene (r=0.194, p<0.01) and the subjective perception of oral health (r=0.232, p<0.01) had a significant positive correlation with oral hygiene device awareness. Moreover, this study showed that females (β=-0.185, p<0.05) and those with greater interest in oral health (β=0.156, p<0.05) were more familiar with and used toothbrushes regularly. Finally, this study showed that females (β=-0.459, p<0.001) and those who did not suffer from halitosis (β=-0.215, p<0.01) were more familiar with and used oral hygiene devices regularly. Conclusions: To ensure the proper recognition and use of oral hygiene devices, professional oral health education is necessary. Furthermore, various forms of media should be used to disseminate information on oral hygiene devices.
Objectives: This study aims to investigate the elements to affect the usage of individual oral hygiene devices in adults by the age group, to make the community inhabitants keep their healthy dental hygiene status, and to provide them with the educational materials for the dental hygiene and the basic data for the program development. The purpose of the study is to investigate the relation ot use of oral hygiene devices in the adults. Methods: The subjects were 9,073 adults from the sixth KNHANES from January, 2013 to December, 2014. The study consisted of questionnaire survey and direct physical examination. The questionnaire included genral characteristics of the subjects and oral health characteristics. The general characteristics consisted of subjective perception of health and chronic diseases. The oral health characteristics consisted of subjective oral health perception, dental caries, periodontal disease, annual oral examination, toothbrushing, prosthetics, implant surgery, and use of individual oral hygiene devices. Results: Those within 40 to 64 years old were the top users of oral hygiene devices. They perceived their dental hygiene was normal because they did not have periodontal disease but most of them had dental caries. They used oral hygiene devices three times a day and brushed teeth more than three times a day. They took annual dental checkup. Conclusions: It is necessary to promote the use of oral hygiene devices to prevent the dental caries and periodontal disease. The continuous training for the dental hygienists is very important because the dental hygienists is the first line of the prevention of dental caries and periodontal disease.
Objectives : This study had been performed for Respondents who live in Daegu and Kyungbuk province Age group of 30 to 50 years old. Methods : The oral health state and oral heath care, dental treatments about the use of oral hygiene devices were obtained through self-administering questionnaires from 2 to 31, January, 2009. Results : 1. The toothpick was well known for respondents and automatic brush, gargle, dental floss were practically used. 2. 57.1% of man know oral hygiene device, they know more about oral hygiene device if they have higher degree, and they use more if they are older than others. 3. 55.5% of respondents who think their oral health condition is not healthy enough recognize oral hygiene device, 77.5% of respondents who visited dental clinic around six month recognize oral hygiene device. 82.4% of respondents who had been follow-up. 86.1% of respondents who think their oral health state is good enough doesn't use oral hygiene device, oral hygiene device was used more for respondents who visited dental clinic frequently. 47.1% of respondents who visited dental clinic periodically use oral hygiene device. 4. Respondents who experience implant recognize more about oral hygiene device and periodontal Tx, orthodontics problem, preservative treatment were next. 5. 60.0% of respondents who were educated tooth brushing method recognize it. Oral hygiene device was frequently used if tooth brushing time were increased. 26.4% of respondents who were changed their tooth brushing method used oral hygiene device. Conclusions : Their recognition level was practically low whose age is around 30 to 50. Their oral hygiene device use ratio is higher then others who were educated tooth brush method so that I think we need to recommend for use oral hygiene device and use method.
Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the oral health behavior in the upper grades of elementary school in relation to oral health literacy and oral health knowledge. Methods: A survey on the general characteristics, oral health literacy, oral health knowledge, and oral health behavior was administered to students in the upper grades of five elementary schools in Daegu and Gyeongbuk, South Korea, from March to June, 2018. Finally, a total of 236 questionnaires were analyzed. Results: Oral health literacy in accordance with oral health behavior was high when oral health behavior was high (p<0.05). The results of multiple regression analysis of the general characteristics, oral health knowledge, oral health literacy, and oral health behavior were analyzed as follows: Y (oral health behavior) = 2.028 + 0.113 (oral health literacy) (p<0.05). Conclusions: To ensure appropriate oral health behavior among elementary school students, it is necessary to develop systematic programs in elementary schools to provide oral health education to increase oral health literacy and oral health knowledge.
Objectives: This study aimed to check the effect of preschool visiting oral health education programs and provide baseline data for an oral health education program that suggests the necessity of oral health education in children's living places. Methods: The preschool visiting oral health education was conducted with the parents of 3-year-old and 4-year-old children at a preschool in the jurisdiction of the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education, with teachers observing the education, and oral health educators to examine the effect of the oral health education, the effectiveness of the education, the status of oral health care, and the degree of cooperation for the education. Results: Regarding oral health behaviors after the education program, the attitude toward brushing teeth after food intake increased from 2.86 to 3.17 and thinking of the relationship with dental caries and eating food increased from 2.57 to 2.90. The satisfaction with the children's health education was very high at over 4.9 points in most items. The teachers' interest in children's oral care was 4.26 points, and the degree of their cooperation for education was 4.41 points; 96.4% responded that they were willing to conduct reeducation. Conclusions: Children's oral health education should be conducted steadily and repeatedly.
