This paper describes combustion tuning methodology of double-swirl gas turbine combustor using six sigma tools. This methodology is consist of five steps-Define, Identify, Design, Optimize and Verify (DIDOV). First, the NOx reduction target was defined in the step design; second, the current status of the plant was diagnosed in the step of identify; third, the vital few control parameters to achieve the defined target were determined by analyzing the correlation between the control parameters and NOx emissions in the step of design; fourth, the optimum condition was derived from one of the six sigma tools in the step of optimize; finally, the optimum condition was verified by applying the condition to the gas turbine combustor in the step of verify. As a result of the suggested method, averaged NOx emissions were reduced by more than 70% and the standard deviation was improved by more than 60%. Thus, this methodology can be attributed to the efficient reduction of NOx emission with saving combustion tuning time.
Optimum operation conditions of low-NOx MILD combustion for gaseous and solid fuels have been investigated by experimental and computer simulation. Loop reactor type MILD combustor without air pre-heater has been used in the present work. The results show that the balance of injection velocities of fuel and surrounding air is major factor for maintaining MILD combustion mode. Temperature difference between lower and upper part can be reduced less than 20 degree of Celsius. It was found that NOx emission in MILD combustion also can be remarkably reduced to more than 85% in comparison with conventional premixed combustion, and reduced to more than 50% in case of nitrogen and carbon dioxide carrying dried waste water sludge and pulverized coal in comparison with the same of air carrying. It was also found that carbon monoxide emission increase was not appeared at the time of changeover to MILD combustion mode from premixed or air carrying combustion at optimum operation condition.
The combustion test used DTF was performed to obtain the characteristics of NOx emission and reduction. In this test, major factor of NOx emission was a stoichiometric air ratio. At the onset of combustion to be rich oxygen, NOx was produced rapidly. Optimum condition for NOx reduction was formed under about AR:0.7 in the combustion test of Alaska coal. Investigations were undertaken with 200KW(th) test combustor. In combustion test, the major variables were coal feed ratio of center/outer, stoichiometric air ratio at the onset of combustion. The lowest NOx emission, 182ppm(6% O2 base), was achieved at about AR:0.6 of the first combustion stage with low NOx burner. Also, unburned carbon content of char collected in this combustion condition was about 1wt%.
The wood pellet, which is one of the woody biomass energy, has very high economic efficiency and combustion efficiency during their combustion. The existing pellet burner have many problems such as low combustion efficiency, flame stabilization, ash problem and ignition time etc. We developed cyclonic wood pellet burner aim to 20,000kcal/hr boiler and measured temperature profiles and exhaust gases in order to investigate the flame stability and optimum combustion condition at any air flow conditions. As results, we confirmed the reappearance and the isotropy of the experimental results in the burner. At the first air flow inlet condition of excess air ratio ${\alpha}=0.02$, second air flow $490{\ell}/min$ had the best combustion condition when pellet supplied 30g. This result means that we need much air supply only for the swirling of second air flow. So we tested various second air flux at first air excess air ratio ${\alpha}=0.7$ condition. At this condition, we could find out that we don't need much second air and total air flux compared to the former condition. We will continuously test this work of air flow distribution, and swirl effect of first air flow, and ash elimination.
Circulating fluidized bed combustion (hereafter CFBC) technology enables an efficient combustion for the materials with low heating values such as high ash coal and sludges. It also has desulfation function by adding limestone directly to combustor. The CFBC has been considered as one of the best processes for low grade coal containing with large contents of ash and sulfur. In this paper, in order to various tests were performed to find the optimum desulfation condition for CFBC using Korean Anthracite. We surveyed possible parameters and conducted desulfation efficiency test in D Thermal Power Plant. In addition, the result of some fundamental theoretical consideration was discussed with CFBC. Optimum limestone size could be considered to be 0.1-0.3mm irrespective of combustion temperature and Ca/S molar ratio variation. Desulfation efficiency increased as the molar ratio increased. Because desulfation process occurs at the surface at higher temperature, inner side of limestone can't be utilized. When surface area is not appropriate, some SO$_2$ emit without reaction. Optimum molar ratio should be decided after considering chemical and physical properties of limestone and coal thoroughly such as particle size, pore size and HGI. Commercial CFBC is operated at Ca/S 1.6. Combustor temperature 840-87$0^{\circ}C$ shows good desulfation efficiency.
The experiment was performed by using the condenser discharge ignition device in a constant volume combustion chamber for high pressure, equivalent to the TDC of spark ignition engine, which makes the forced turbulent field possible. The conclusions obtained under various initial pressures, initial temperatures, and turbulent conditions of the methanol-air mixture are as follows : As initial pressure, initial temperature of the mixture, and the ignition energy increase, the inflammability limit expands, but the lean inflammability limit decreases as turbulence intensity increases. Combustion duration is shorter in the case of the lower initial pressure, the higher initial temperature, an equivalence ratio of 1.1-1.2, and even though turbulence intensity increases up to optimum value. Maximum combustion pressure increases in turbulent ambience under the same mixture condition, only in the case each optimum turbulence intensity exists under every condition. As the turbulence intensity increases .tau.$_{10}$ proportion increases while the .tau.$_{pr}$ proportion decreases....
Catalytic combustion is the environmental-friendly technology, which has been applied to a variety of areas for industrial and domestic use in recent years. Accordingly, this study performed the development of the catalytic manufacturing technology for the high temperature and of the catalytic combustor in priority, which were aimed to be applied to a commercialized boiler. Paliadium(Pd) of a noble metal was used as a catalyst for the high temperature and supported on alumina($Al_[2}O_{3}$) and zirconia($ZrO_{2}$) in constant weight ratio. Activity of Pd catalysts is compared and analyzed in the catalytic combustion of natural gas. The ratio of $Pd/Al_{2}O_{3}=4$ was found to be better than any other weight ratios in activity and durability. The performance examination of catalysts and of combustion through the plate-type combustor made it possible to be developed the cylindrical-type combustor which has increased combustion area. Catalytic combustion boiler of 25,000 kcal/hr class was also developed, which had the optimum combustion condition at the nozzle of 5.95mm and the orifice of 21mm. This condition was determined through the performance experiments of catalytic combustion boiler to which the cylindrical-type catalytic combustor was applied.
In this paper, our main issue is that establishing the control procedure of continuous gas flow rate according to combustion fan RPM. For this, first, we decide the optimum operating condition of gas swirl burner through analysis of combustion characteristics - thermal efficiency, combustion efficiency and exhaust gases such as CO, $CO_{2}$, $O_{2}$, $NO_{x}$ and THC. Second, fuel gas flow rate of gas valve is decided with considering excess air ratio and combustion fan RPM is decided by the target of combustion air flow rate. Finally, experimental operating equation is acquired by regression for gas valve and combustion fan. This equation is the control equation of continuous gas flow rate and always gas flow rate is decided by combustion fan operating RPM.
The performance characteristics of lean burn system in gasoline engine are mainly affected by the air-fuel mixture in cylinder, gas exchange process of manifold system, exhaust emission of engine, and the electronic engine control system. In order to obtain the effect of performance factors on the optimum conditions of lean burn engine, this study deal with the behavior of mixture formation, gas flow characteristics of air, flow and evaporation analysis of spray droplet in cylinder, vaporization and burning characteristics of lean mixture in the engine, and the control performance of electronic engine control system. The optimum flow conditions were investigated with the swirl and tumble flows in the combustion chamber with swirl control valve. The performance characteristics and optimum condition of flow field in intake system were analyzed by the investigation of inlet flow of air and combustion stabilization on cylinder.
In this study, the waste of landfill was treated using advanced enriched oxygen combustion system. The oxygen concentration of this study was 21%, 25%, 30% and 40% and the operating capacity was 200 g/min and the residence time was 10 minutes. As increased the oxygen concentration of combustion air. temperature of the incinerator was increased and the temperature was increased rapidly when the oxygen concentration was 30%. As increased the oxygen concentration, the NOx (ppm) of flue gas increase d for thermal NOx, however the CO (ppm) of flue gas decreased according to the increase of combustion efficiency . The optimum operation condition of incineration was obtained when the oxygen concentration is 30%${\sim}$40%. The unburned carbon of ash decreased from 10% to 4% when the oxygen concentration was increased from 21% to 30%, therefore the high combustion efficiency can be obtained if used the oxygen enriched combustion system.
