  • Traditional criteria for optimum experimental designs depend on the specifications of the model; however, there will be a dilemma when we do not have perfect knowledge about the model. Box and Draper (1959) suggested one direction to minimize bias that may occur in this situation. We will demonstrate some examples with exact solutions that provide a no-bias design for polynomial regression. The most interesting finding is that a design that requires less bias should allocate design points away from the border of the design space.

  • Computer simulation is essential to design the suspension elements of railway vehicle. By computer simulation, engineers can assess the feasibility of a given design factors and change them to get a better design. But if one wishes to perform complex analysis on the simulation, such as railway vehicle dynamic, the computational time can become overwhelming. Therefore, many researchers have used a mega model that has a regression model made by sampling data through simulation. In this paper, the neural network is used a mega model that have twenty-nine design variables and forty-six responses. After this mega model is constructed, multi-objective optimal solutions are achieved by using the differential evolution. This paper shows that this optimization method using the neural network and the differential evolution is a very efficient tool to solve the complex optimization problem.

  • Stainless steel stamping multistage pump has become the mainstream of civil multi-stage pump. Combined with the technological features of stamping and welding pump, the studies of design for hydraulic parts of pump were come out. An $L_{18}$$3^7$)orthogonal experiment was designed with seven factors and three values including blade inlet angle, impeller outer diameter, guide vane blade number, etc. 18 plans were designed. The two stage of whole flow field on stainless steel stamping multistage pump at design point for design was simulated by CFD. According to the test result and optimization design with experimental research, the trends of main parameters which affect hydraulic performance were got. After being manufactured and tested, the efficiency of the optimal model pump reaches 61.36% and the single head is more than 4.8 m. Compared with the standard efficiency of 53%, the design of the stainless steel stamping pump is successful. The result would be instructive to the design of Stainless steel stamping multistage pump designed by the impeller head maximum approach.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare data input interfaces used in e-business applications on the web and find optimal input design characteristics. Basic data entry tools such as a pull down menu, list, text input box, and radio button were examined by inputting data into a simulated hotel room reservation web site. Experimental results indicated that the text input box was most efficient for experts or experienced operators when there are more than four menu-items and pull down menu was considered most satisfactory, simplest, and easier to use for novices or unexperienced users. A simple list was determined to be the best for the input of binary data considering user's satisfaction, simplicity, and flexibility but radio button was evaluated best for the ease to use. Design guide lines of this study can be applied to build a usable interactive web sites and increase economic efficiency.

  • A partition integrated air supply system can provide highly personalized environmental control. The supply air is brought up through raised floors and supplied to outlets located on the partition panels. The purpose of this paper is to find out the best design of outlets for optimal occupant comfort within a personal task area. Real scale experiments were conducted to allow for comparisons of outlet designs within a personal task area. Experimental results indicate that the location of an outlet is the most critical factor in improving the efficiency of supply air distribution of a personal task area. Thermal characteristic comparisons were made between the under-floor and the partition supply systems. Experimental results suggest that the partition supply system is more efficient than the under-floor supply system in terms of cooling. Such a system allows occupants to personally control their immediate environment, resulting in higher productivity.

  • It is known that the analysis of thermal stresses is substantially important in optimal design of casting mould. In this paper unsteady state thermal stresses generated in ingot and mould during the solidification process are analyzed by the two dimensional thermal elasto-plastic analysis. Distribution of temperature and stress of the mould is calculated using the finite element method and compared with experimental result. The significant results obtained in this study are as follows. At the early stage of the casting process, abrupt temperature change was shown in the vicinity of the inner surface of the mould. The largest temperature gradient is occurred at the corner of the mould. In the thermal stress analysis, compressible stress occurred in the inside wall of the mould where as tensile stress on outside wall. Smaller thermal stress is observed at the rounded corner. It is also observed that the shown is influenced by the thickness of the wall. A fairly good coincidence is found between analytical and experimental results, showing that the proposed analytical methodology is reliable.

  • It is well recognized that the ultrasonic method is one of the most common and reliable nondestructive testing (NDT) methods for the quantitative estimation of defects in welded structures. However, NDT techniques applying for adhesively bonded joints have not been clearly established yet. In this paper, the detection of interface crack by the ultrasonic method was applied for the measurement of interfacial crack length in the adhesively bonded joints of double-cantilever beam (DCB). An optimal condition of transmission coefficients and experimental accuracy by the ultrasonic method in the adhesively bonded joints have been investigated and discussed. The experimental values are in good agreement with the computed results by boundary element method (BEM) and Ripling's equation.

  • New layout methods for implementing MOS switches of ultra low channel resistance are presented. These area-effective layout methods include the waffle structure, zipper structure, star zag structure and fingered waffle structure. The design equations for these new layout structures are analyzed. The area-effectiveness of these structures is compared with that of the conventional alternating bar structure. MOS switches of the waffle structure were fabricated using a standard 0.25um CMOS process. The experimental characterization results of the fabricated MOS switches are presented. The analytical comparison and experimental results show that area reductions over 40% are achievable with the new structures.

  • Both numerical and experimental studies on sedimentation efficiency of a sedimentation bed were carried out. Three different structures of sedimentation bed and five different combinations of blockage ratio of center feed wall and angle of distributor are implemented to find the optimal values of geometric parameters. The effect of rotation of the distributor on sedimentation efficiency is also investigated. It reveals that the effect of blockage ratio and angle of distributor on sedimentation efficiency is considerable, while rotation effect can be neglected, and that calculated efficiencies show good agreements with those of experiment, qualitatively.

  • Steam ejector systems are widely used for the evacuation systems because of their high working confidence and simlicity. And recently these are used as the thermo-compressors in various energy saving systems. In this practical experiment, we have obtained the results as follows : (1) The velocity coefficient of the motive steam nozzle was 0.92-0.98. (2) The optimal area ratio was 0.00625 at pressure ratio 5.2 and expansion ratio 101.3. (3) The performance and efficiency of the steam ejector were mainly affected by the axial position of nozzle. (4) The good performance of the domestic manufactured steam ejector was confirmed in comparison with the foreign one. And by experimental results, we have carried out the improvement of Computer Aided Design Program of steam ejector which will be helpful for systematic research into the steam ejector.
