  • A conventional linear accelerator system requires a flat-topped pulse with less than ${\pm}$ 0.5% ripple to meet the beam energy spread requirements and to improve pulse efficiency of RF systems. A pulse transformer is one of main determinants on the output pulse voltage shape. The pulse transformer was investigated and analyzed with the pulse response characteristics using a simplified equivalent circuit model. The damping factor ${\sigma}$ must be >0.86 to limit the overshoot to less than 0.5% during the flat-top phase. The low leakage inductance and distributed capacitance are often limiting factors to obtain a fast rise time. These parameters are largely controlled by the physical geometry and winding configuration of the transformer. A rise time can be improved by reducing the number of turns, but it produces larger pulse droop and requires a larger core size. By tradeoffs among these parameters, the high-voltage pulse transformer with a pulse width of 10 ${\mu}s$, a rise time of 0.84 ${\mu}s$, and a pulse droop of 2.9% has been designed and fabricated to drive a klystron which has an output voltage of 284 kV, 30-MW peak and 60-kW average RF output power. This paper describes design optimization of a high-voltage pulse transformer for high-power pulsed applications. The experimental results were analyzed and compared with the design. The design and optimal tuning parameter of the system was identified using the model simulation.

  • In recent years, better quality in power electric services is being required with the development of information industries and the improvement of living standards. Also, the small scaled dispersed storage and generation (DSG) systems are being interconnected with the distribution systems and customers by the influence of the recent issues such as deregulation and global environmental problems in power system. Under these circumstances, it is very important to maintain the customer voltages within allowable limits for the distribution system which is located at the most sensitive part in the power system. To overcome these problems, this paper shows the basic concepts of FRIENDS which is considered as one of the power delivery system in the near future and also presents an evaluation method on the impacts of customer voltages by operation models of FRIENDS. The FRIENDS can change the system configuration in a flexible manner by using the static switches and offer the different power qualities in power services through the power quality control centers which play the most important role in FRIENDS. Numerical examples are shown in order to indicate the efficiency of the proposed method.

  • Many type of fuel cell stacks have been developed to improve the efficiency of reactants usage. The cascade type fuel cell stack using dead end operation is able to attain above 99% usage of hydrogen and oxygen. It is sectionalized to several parts and the residual reactants which are used previous parts would be supplied again to next parts which have less number of cells in dead end operation stack. The oversupply of reactants which is usually 120%~150% of the theoretical amount to generate current for preventing the flooding effect could be provided to each part except the last one. The final section which is called monitoring cells is supposed to be supplied insufficient the fuel or oxidant that would have some accumulated inert gas from former parts. It makes some voltage drop in the part and the fresh reactants must be supplied to the part for recovering it by venting the residual gas. So the usage of fuel and oxidant is depend on the time and frequency of opening valves for venting of residual gas and it is important to optimize the vent logic for achieving higher usage of hydrogen and oxygen. In this research, many experiments are performed to find optimal condition by evaluating the effect of time and frequency under several power conditions using over 100kW class fuel cell module. And the characteristics of the monitoring cells are studied to know the proper cell voltage which decide the condition of opening the vent valve for stable performance of the cascade type fuel cell module.

  • Automatic washing machines have been improved and popularized steadily since the first electric washing machine was produced in the early 1900's. Appliance industry has tried to obtain the performance of washing machine with large capacity, high energy efficiency, low vibration and low noise levels. As the installation peace of a washer becomes closer to the living space, vibration and noise problems become more important challenges. In general, a washing machine has four legs to support its body. Four legs of the washing machine should be attached on a floor. If not so, it may cause severe vibration or walking in the spin-drying process. Unfortunately, the floor of an ordinary house is bumpy in general, and the consumers will not accept bolting washing machines to a foundation; moreover, sometimes they move the location of their washing machines to utility rooms or bath rooms or kitchens and don't care for leveling the legs exactly. In this study, we devise an auto-leg system that prevents the occurrence of abnormal vibration and walking of washing machines. It is simply composed of a spring and a friction damper. Some experiments are implemented to show the dynamic characteristics of the three-dimensional auto-legged washing machine model that is located on the even or uneven ground. A spring parameter is optimized to adjust the length of the auto-leg system automatically up to 10 mm irregularity, and the friction damper is designed to decrease a resonance induced by the spring of the auto-leg system. Some numerical results show that placing the proposed auto-leg system in a washing machine makes good performance with low vibration, as well as low noise, regardless of the unevenness of the floor.

  • As modern houses are constructed with high-density and high-insulation, there is benefit to reduce energy consumption, but there are many side effects raised from polluted air. To solve the problem, a ventilation system is used to improve a indoor air quality. In this study, we tested the parallel flow type heat exchanger used in a heat exchanger of an automotive air conditioner. And we experimentally estimate ventilation performance of HRV(heat recovery ventilator) with heat-pipe according to working fluid filling quantity and ventilation. The working fluid was R22, which was filled from 40 to 60 (%vol.) by 10(%vol.). Ventilation based on the front velocity was measured from 0.3 m/s to 1.5 m/s by 0.3 m/s intervals. Refrigerant filling quantity with the highest efficiency was found to depend on the ventilation. From this study the optimal refrigerant filling quantity in accordance with the ventilation of the detachable heat pipes was found experimentally.

  • With the world population's continuous growth and urban industrialization, capacitive deionization (CDI) has been proposed as a next-generation water treatment technology to augment the supply of water. As a future water treatment method, CDI attracts significant attention because it offers small energy consumption and low environmental impact in comparison to conventional methods. Carbon electrodes, which have large surface area and high conductivity, are mainly used as electrode materials of choice for the removal of ions in water. A variety of carbon materials have been investigated, including their adsorption-desorption behavior in accordance to the specific surface area and pore size distribution. In this review, we analyzed and highlighted these carbon materials and looked at the impact of pore size distribution to the overall CDI efficiency. Finally, we propose an optimal condition in the interplay between micropores and mesopores in order to provide the best electrosorption property for these carbon electrodes.

  • In this paper, both an approximate expression and an exact expression for the contribution factor of an element to the natural frequency of the finite element discretized system of a structure in general and a membrane in particular have been derived from the energy conservation principle and the finite element formulation of structural eigenvalue problems. The approximate expression for the contribution factor of an element is used to predict and determine the elements to be removed in an iteration since it depends only on the quantities associated with the old system in the iteration. The exact expression for the contribution factor of an element makes it possible to check whether the element is correctly removed at the end of an iteration because it depends on both the old system and the new system in the iteration. Thus, the combined use of the approximate expression and the exact expression allows a considerable number of elements to be removed in a single iteration so that the efficiency of the evolutionary structural optimization method can be greatly improved for solving the natural frequency optimization problem of a structure. A square membrane with different boundary supports has been chosen to investigate the general evolutionary path for the fundamental natural frequency of the structure. The related results indicated that if the objective of a structural optimization is to raise the fundamental natural frequency of the structure to an optimal value, the general evolutionary path during its optimization is that the elements are gradually removed along the direction from the area surrounded by the contour of the highest value to that surrounded by the contour of the lowest value.

  • Two bacterial strains capable of degrading trichloroethylene (TCE), isolated form soils contaminated with various chlorinated alkenes, were identified as Alcaligenes odorous N6 and Nocardia sp. Hl7. In addition, four KCTC strains, including three strains of Pseudomonas putida and one strain of Sphingomonas chlorophenolica, exhibited an ability to degrade toluene. A. odorans N6 and Nocardia sp. H17 degraded 84% of the initial amount of TCE in a basal salts medium (BSM), containing 0.2 mM TCE as the sole source of carbon and energy, in a day. The optimal pH for growth was within a range of 7.0-8.0. A mixed culture of the four toluene-degrading isolates degraded 95% of 0.2 mM TCE with 1.5 mM toluene as an inducer, whereas no TCE was degraded by the same mixture without an inducer. When a mixed culture of all 6 isolates was used, the degradation efficiency of 0.2 mM TCE was 72% without an inducer, in a day, and 82% with toluene as an inducer. In a continuous treatment, 1,000 mg/1 of TCE in an artificial wastewater was completely removed within 18 h when an activated sludge was used along with the microbial mixture, which was 27 h laster than when only an activated sludge was used. Accordingly, it would appear that such a microbial mixture could be effectively applied to the biological treatment of wastewater containing TCE with or without an inducer.

  • We have investigated the key parameters affecting ATP regeneration in a cell-free protein synthesis system derived from Escherichia coli. When glucose-6-phosphate was used as an energy source, the efficiency of ATP regeneration sharply responded to pH change of reaction mixture. In addition, both productivity and reproducibility of protein synthesis was substantially enhanced by introducing appropriate amount of NAD into the reaction mixture. As a result, through the activation of glycolytic pathway under an optimal pH, the batch cell-free system produced over $300\;{\mu}g$ of protein in a 1 mL reaction.

  • The SR-DCSK(Short Reference Differential Chaos Shift Keying) is a variant of DCSK that improves data transmission speed and energy efficiency without additional complexity. However, even when the reference signal of the optimum length is applied, the BER performance of the SR-DCSK is not better than that of the conventional DCSK. In this paper, we propose a scheme to improve the performance of SR-DCSK by applying two scale factors (scale coefficients) to the reference signal and the information signal, respectively. And the performance of the proposed method is analyzed by BER using Gaussian Approximation. Based on the derived BER expressions, we minimize the BER for a given system parameter to optimize the ratio of the two coefficients. Simulation results confirm that the BER of the proposed method is much improved over the SR-DCSK when we apply the optimal ratio of the two scale factors.
