  • We examined effects of crosslinking agents, i.e., ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate (EGD) and butanediol dimethacrylate (BDD) containing ester groups on chloromethylation of crosslinked polystyrene resin matrices. It was proved that the ester group in methylmethacrylate (MMA) accelerates the chloromethylation of the divinylbenzene (DVB)-crosslinked styrene-MMA copolymer. As the MMA content increased in the styrene-MMA copolymers, the chloromethylation was enhanced. Complete chloromethylation was obtained at about 25% MMA content.

  • A new one series of chiral schiff's base containing benzylidene aniline moieties was synthesized and characterized by IR, $^1H$ NMR. elementary analysis, and polarized optical microscopy(POM). The yield of these synthetic compounds was in the range of $62{\sim}67^{\circ}C$. The results showed that most of the synthetic compounds were monotropic liquid crystal and exhibited chiral smectic C($Sc^{\ast}$) liquid crystal phases, and the range of phase transition temperature was to $71.4^{\circ}C$ from $45.0^{\circ}C$.

  • Poly(n-hexyl-(S)-3-methylpentylsilane) aggregates confined in microcapsules to keep the aggregation number and ranging in average polymer mass in a microcapsule from $2{\Box}10^{-16}\;to\;2{\Box}10^{-14}g$. were studied by circular dichroism measurements in ethanol (a non solvent) and tetrahydrofuran (an associative solvent at low temperature) at varioustemperatures. The size of each aggregate did not affect the optical activity because the circular dichroism was proportional to the aggregation number at the same condition. Moreover, the circular dichroism appreciably reflected the prepared method, i.e. temperature and solvent.

  • Upon the basis of the results obtained hitherto in the studies of the stereochemical reaction mechanisms, the author has concluded that the stereospecificity of enzymes has essentially a relative character. And the author has pointed out the possibility of the occurrence of a new enzyme "inverskinase", which catalyses the reversible inversions such as D-compound ${\leftrighyarrow}$ L-compound in living organisms, and considered the stereospecificity of enzymes and the optical purity of components of living organism from this new standpoint.

  • The enantioselective ${\alpha}$-chlorination of cyclic ${\beta}$-ketoesters catalyzed by chiral 2-aminoalcohol derivatives (2f) has been developed. For the optically active ${\alpha}$-chlorinated products, the isolated yields are in the range of 85-94% and the enantiomeric excesses are up to 84% ee.

  • A relativistic jet associated with active galactic nuclei (AGNs) is almost ubiquitous while its formation mechanism is still not well understood. To get a deeper understanding of how an AGN jet forms and evolves, we have obtained Very Large Baseline Array (VLBA) data of a compact and optically violent variable quasar, OVV 1633+382 which is a small line-of-sight angle version of Fanaroff-Reily type 2 galaxy. Before our data were taken, a pronounced flare had been reported at mm wavelengths, making this object an excellent laboratory to study detailed properties of a radio jet powered by an AGN. The target have been observed in 12 epochs between 2002 and 2005 at 22, 43 and 86 GHz in full polarization mode. Among these observations, in this work, we present 43 GHz total intensity maps of our target for three epochs to discuss kinematics and geometry of the jet.

  • A Korean VLBI Network Key Science Program, the Interferometric Monitoring of Gamma-ray Bright AGNs (iMOGABA) program continues to aim at revealing the origins of the gamma-ray flares that are often detected in active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Here in this presentation, we would like to present what we have learned about the Gamma-ray bright AGNs based on the recent results of the Korean VLBI Network Key Science Program: the iMGOABA. The results will include a) the source properties of the whole samples obtained from a single-epoch observation, and b) some of scientific highlights for the iMOGAGBA on specific sources. From those highlighted works, we find that the Gamma-ray bright AGNs become fainter at higher frequencies, yielding optically thin spectra at mm wavelengths. Based on the studies on specific sources, taking into account the synchrotron self-absorption model of the relativistic jet, we estimated the magnetic field strength in the mas emission region during the observing period.

  • A simple technique to measure electro-optic coefficients has been developed. It is based on rotating analyzer polarimetry. With a coaxial configuration of the optically active polarizing devices, the synchronously digitized signals are Fourier analyzed to quantitatively determine the elliptical polarization of light and, hence, the electric field induced birefringence. This technique has the advantage that it does not require waveguiding, and since it is improved from the crossed polarizer method it measures the phase retardation directly. It has been applied for the precise determination of electro-optic coefficients of uniaxial LiNbO3 single crystals. The excellent agreeement with reported values confirms its usefulness toward accurate characterization of electro-optic coefficients of unknown specimens.

  • Enantioselective hydrolysis for the production of chiral styrene oxide was investigated using the epoxide hydrolase activity of a newly isolated Rhodosporidium kratochvilovae SYU-08. The effects of reaction parameters - buffer type, pH, temperature, initial substrate concentrations, phenyl-1,2-ethanediol concentrations on hydrolysis rate, and enantioselectivity - were analyzed. Optically active (S)-styrene oxide with an enantiomeric excess higher than 99 % was obtained from its racemate. with a yield of 38 % (theoretically 50% maximum yield) from an initial concentration of 80 mM.

  • Chirality is important in the context of biological activity because at a molecular level, asymmetry dominates biological process. While most pharmaceuticals of natural origin are single enantiomers, most of the synthesized chiral drugs are used in the form of racemic mixtures of two or more diastereomers. The enantiomers of a racemic drug generally differ in pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic properties as a consequence of stereoselective interaction with optically active molecular components of living organism. In pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics enantioselectivity plays an important role. The information on the sum of eutomer and distorter in a racemic drugs is very important in the estimation of therapeutic advantage and/or toxicity of racemates. The choice of preferentially developing a single enantiomer should be based on actual therapeutic advantages and especially improved safety.
