  • This study was performed to analyze the optical aberrations of the cornea induced by myopic refractive surgery. Corneal total higher-order aberrations, spherical aberration and coma for 4-mm and 6-mm pupils were measured using a wave-front analyzer. The amount of aberrations of the oblate corneal optics by the achieved correction was found to be larger than for the prolate corneal shape with complete eye, in an emmetropia control group. The change in corneal shape acts as an optical factor that degrades the quality of the retinal image; it seems to be one of the important factors related to quality of vision.

  • In this paper, slim type optical pickup actuator was fabricated and its FE model was tuned to experimental results through precise coil models. In order to widen its control bandwidth, stiffness of moving parts was increased by changing shape of coil section. Finally, we checked that flexible mode frequency and gain margin was increased.

  • The optical storage device has recently experienced significant improvements, especially for the aspects of high capacity and fast transfer rate. However, it is the fact that the optical storage device has the lower access time for the randomly scattered data compared to the hard disk drives. It is, therefore, necessary to develop a new type of optical storage system. In this study, we investigate the air bearing characteristics for the optical disk drives which have the swing arm actuator similarly to the hard disk drives. Considering the requirements of the optical disk drives, we parametrize the shape of the air bearing surface and investigate its sensitivity to the flying characteristics for further optimized design outputs.

  • In this paper, a design method to reduce fabrication errors in reflector shape of a test lamp for a flame detector is carried out. Although the test lamp should be operated in parallel with a high-intensity light, it is difficult to fix the small reflector that controls the central light during fabrication. To solve these problems, a small spherical reflector is designed to minimize the performance degradation for a light loss factor of less than 5%, even during tilt and decenter, and a spherical shape is proposed for a small reflector with little effect on the error when designing the optical system.

  • The side burrs and shape distortion resulting from the micromachining of an array of V-shape microgrooves in optical components were experimentally invesigated and a simplified model for their formation is proposed. Burr/shpae distortion should be kept to a minimum level since they degrade the characteristics and performance of these parts. The focus of this study is on the influence of depth of cut and workpiece material. The workpiece materials use were brass, bronze and copper. From the obsevation of the chip shape and burr/shape distortion, the proposed model, that the compressive force at the cutting edge causess the ductile uncut chip material to flow plastically outward toward the free surface to result in a burr, was verified.

  • Surface enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) has attracted attention because the technique enables detection of various chemicals, even down to single molecular scale. Among the diverse candidates for SERS substrates, Au nanoparticles are considered promising due to their fine optical properties, chemical stability and ease of surface modification. Therefore, the fabrication and optical characterization of gold particles on solid supports is highly desirable. Such structures have potential as SERS substrates because the localized surface plasmon resonance of gold nanoparticles is very sensitive to combined molecules and environments. In addition, it is well-known that the properties of Au nanoparticles are strongly dependent on their shape. In this work, arrays of shape-controlled Au nanoparticles were fabricated to exploit their enhanced and reproducible optical properties. First, shape-controlled Au nanoparticles were prepared via seed mediated solution-phase synthesis, including spheres, octahedra, and rhombic dodecahedra. Then, these shape-controlled Au nanoparticles were arranged on a PDMS substrate, which was nanopatterned using soft lithography of poly styrene particles. The Au nanoparticles were selectively located in a pattern of hexagonal spheres. In addition, the shape-controlled Au nanoparticles were arranged in various sizes of PDMS nanopatterns, which can be easily controlled by manipulating the size of polystyrene particles. Finally, the optical properties of the fabricated Au nanoparticle arrays were characterized by measuring surface enhanced Raman spectra with 4-nitrobenezenethiol.

  • Aero-optical effects induced by the flow around the optical window degrade the performance of the IR seeker, especially for the hypersonic flow. For the thermochemical non-equilibrium flow, index of refraction model and optical transmission calculation method are developed to predict the aero-optical effects. The optical distortion is discussed for the typical optical widow shape and flow condition. The influence on aero-optical effects is analyzed.

  • This paper is focused on the improvement of reflection angle of an optical scanner by changing a shape of a torsion bar attached with an optical scanner reflector(mirror). In order to improve the light efficiency of the optical scanner by virtue of the magnetic effect, which tiny magnets are attached under both ends of the optical scanner reflector. and hence the optical scanner reflector was operated in relatively lower driving voltage. By changing the torsion bar's shape I type into S type, we've got the lower resonant frequency(32.5Hz) of an optical scanner than that of conventional one(50Hz). According to these results. The reflection angle of an optical scanner with magnets was much larger in the range of about 14.8$^{circ}$ without a magnet. By making use of a magnetic actuator instead of a conventional electrostatic actuator, the optical scanner was less influenced from outdoor dust or moisture.
