  • Recent high resolution CO observations of normal and starburst galaxies at Owens Valley Millimeter Array are summarized. While normal disk galaxies generally show exponential distribution which follows the optical blue light, starburst galaxies are often characterized by a compact ($\~$1 kpc) nuclear complex whose surface gas mass density is strongly correlated with the observed large infrared luminosity and thus the ongoing massive star formation.

  • In this paper it is proposed a new architecture for N*N optical packet switching system. It consists of active-splitter type pf packet router, travelling type of optical buffer memory for packet contention resoltuion and an electronic controller. the BER performance of the proposed switching system is analyzed with respect to channel crosstalks and amplified spontaneous emissio noise form switching elements and optical amplifiers respectively. Operational validity of the proposed switching system is also experimentally proved by realizing 2*2 optical packet switching system.

  • Considering the statistical redshift distribution of the known submillimeter galaxy (SMG) population, most of the significant optical emission lines such as [OII]${\lambda}3727$, $H{\beta}$, [OIII]${\lambda}5007$, and $H{\alpha}$ are redshifted into near-infrared. Using the 3D-HST grism data that provides low resolution NIR spectroscopy over the several deep fields covered by the JCMT large program S2CLS, I investigated the properties of the optical emission lines for submm galaxies which could be used as a proxy for future optical/NIR identification and follow up of the SMGs.

  • We have developed several types of optical sources for OCT applications. A high nonlinear PCF with end sealing and a short pulse laser were used to improve of OCT resolution. Additionally, an wavelength sept fiber laser was also developed for frequency-domain OCT.

  • We demonstrate a novel OFDR system with compactness and short measurement time based on the use of a wavelength-swept mode-locked fiber laser. The optical source uses an intra-cavity tunable Fabry-Perot filter as a tuning element. The fiber laser sweeps 20 nm in less than 10 ms. Spatial resolution of 100 fm and total measurement range of several centimeters are demonstrate

  • We introduce a spectral reconstruction method to enhance the spectral resolution in a static modulated Fourier-transform spectrometer. The optical-path difference and the interferogram in the focal plane, as well as the relationship of the interferogram and the spectrum, are discussed. Additionally, for better spectral reconstruction, applications of phase-error correction and apodization are considered. As a result, the transfer function of the spectrometer is calculated, and then the spectrum is reconstructed based on the relationship between the transfer function and the interferogram. The spectrometer comprises a modified Sagnac interferometer. The spectral reconstruction is conducted with a source with central wave number of 6,451 cm-1 and spectral width of 337 cm-1. In a conventional Fourier-transform method the best spectral resolution is 27 cm-1, but by means of the spectral reconstruction method the spectral resolution improved to 8.7 cm-1, without changing the interferometric structure. Compared to a conventional Fourier-transform method, the spectral width in the reconstructed spectrum is narrower by 20 cm-1, and closer to the reference spectrum. The proposed method allows high performance for static modulated Fourier-transform spectrometers.

  • The use of stimulated emission depletion (STED) microscopy has significantly improved resolution beyond the limits imposed by diffraction; Furthermore, STED microscopy adopts a 4Pi-geometry to achieve an isotropic improvement in resolution. In isoSTED microscopy, a polarizing beam splitter and retarders are used in a 4Pi cavity to split beams of identical power, generating constructive and destructive interference for lateral and axial resolution improvements, respectively. The precise alignment of the retarders is crucial for optimizing the performance of isoSTED microscopy, because this orientation affects the quality of the depletion focus, necessitating zero intensity at the center. Incomplete destructive interference can lead to unwanted fluorescence inhibition, resulting in degraded resolution and contrast. However, measuring the intensity and polarization state in each optical path of the 4Pi cavity is complex and requires additional devices such as a power meter. Here, we propose a simple and accurate alignment method for the 4Pi cavity in isoSTED microscopy. Our approach demonstrates the equal allocation of power between upper and lower beam paths and achieves complete destructive interference using a polarizing beam displacer and a single CCD camera positioned outside the 4Pi cavity.

  • We present a high resolution spectrum of PU Vul observed at Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory (BOAO) on April 9, 2004. Permitted emission and nebular lines of PU Vul had been significantly changed compared to all spectra observed since its eruption in 1979. Therefore all new lines should be re-identified and were done so. We do-convoluted a $H{\beta}$ line into several emission components with Gaussian functions. Then we carefully discussed the geometrical feature of PU Vul in April 2004.

  • An efficient dynamic kinetic resolution of racemic ${\beta}$-hydroxyalkylferrocene and 1,1'-bis( ${\beta}$-hydroxyalkyl)-ferrocene derivatives was achieved using lipase/ruthenium-catalyzed transesterification in the presence of an acyl donor. The racemic ${\beta}$-hydroxyalkylferrocene derivatives were successfully transformed to the corresponding chiral acetates of high optical purities in high yields.

  • We report a high resolution spectrum of AG Pegasi observed at Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory (BOAO) on October 2, 2004. Some of permitted emission lines, for example H I, He I, He II, Fe II and Ti II were observed in the spectrum of AG Pegasi in 2004. Lines presented in the longer wavelength region than $6500{\AA}$ are identified. And radial velocities for each element are measured. Then we carefully discuss the geometrical feature of AG Pegasi in October 2004.
