  • The wave-particle duality of light plays important role in quantum optics and it often produces a result different from that of classical wave theory. In this paper, we study the intensity and phase fluctuation of light which show certain change after light goes through a beam splitter, and show the difference between the classical and quantum theory. We show quantitatively that the uncertainty of phase increases at the output of a beam splitter due to the contribution of vacuum fluctuation, even though classical theory predicts no such change in phase fluctuation. The expectation values of normally ordered operators are introduced where the vacuum effect is naturally eliminated, and it is shown that the classical informations are recovered in this way. Analysis on the expectation values produces a distinction between measured phase and inferred phase values and they are related through the contribution of vacuum field.

  • The second harmonic light of an 842 nm diode laser was generated from a KNbO3 crystal in an external ring resonator. The power of the second harmonic light was about 0.8 mV at an input fundamental power of 87 mW. The laser frequency was stabilized to the resonance frequency of the ring resonator, and the frequency fluctuation was measured as about 3 MHz.

  • We have characterized the optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification of femtosecond Ti:sapphire laser pulses by using a BBO crystal. It is numerically verified that a high gain and a broad gain bandwidth can be obtained with a 532-nm pump laser. The dependence of the gain profile of OPA on phase matching angles, pump intensity, and crystal length is numerically investigated. Experimental results shows that the temporal fluctuation of a pump laser causes the modulation of an amplified spectrum in OPCPA.

  • A Mach-Zehnder interferometer using single mode optical fiber was constructed which operates in homodyne detection scheme. Its response to air-borne soun pressure was examined experimentally. A signal stabilizer was developed for maintaining optical fiber interferometer in quadrature condition using a cylindrical piezoelectric stretcher. This maintains the optical fiber sensor at a maximum sensitivity in the presence of the phase drift caused by temperature fluctuation and other types of environmental disturbances.

  • A fiber-optic temperature sensor utilizing an optical absorption device (InP) was fabricated. The spectrum of transmitted light through an InP device was obtained at the three temperatures(249 K, 369 K). A stabilized LED(light emmiting diode) driver, photoreceiver, and signal proocessing electronics were designed. An intensity referencing technique was adopted in order to minimize the fluctuation of output signal due to external pertubation of the transmitting optical fiber. The optical absorption edge of the InP device moves to longer wavelength at a rate of 0.42 nm / K, and energy gap of InP is 1.35 eV at room temperature. From these results, it is concluded that the InP device has temperature dynamic range of 300 K with LED of center wavelength of 940nm and spectral width of 50nm. The designed fiber-optic temperature sensor system showed good linearity within the temperature range from -30$^{\circ}C$ to + 150$^{\circ}C$.

  • Optical Triangulation Probes (OTPs) are widely used for their simple structure. high resolution, and long operating range. However, errors originating from speckle, inclination of the object, source power fluctuation, ambient light, and noise of the detector limit their usability. In this paper, we propose new design criteria for an error-reduced OTP. The light source module for the system consists of an incoherent light source and a multimode optical fiber for eliminating speckle and shaping a Gaussian beam Intensity profile. A diffuse-reflective white copy paper, which is attached to the object, makes the light intensity distribution on the change-coupled device(CCD). Since the peak positions of the intensity distribution are not related to the various error sources, a sub-pixel resolution signal processing algorithm that can detect the peak position makes it possible to construct an error-reduced OTP system

  • In this paper, we introduce a differential detection method using approximate average noise detection, which improves the noise reduction efficiency in a wireless optical interconnection. Approximate average noise detection reduces the output voltage fluctuation that may result from the instantaneous change of the coupling coefficients with the movement of some objects or human beings. This method is very useful for noise reduction in an environment with optical noise whose spatial distribution varies instantaneously.

  • In an optical interferometer that uses sinusoidal modulation and quadrature detection, the amplitude and offset of the interference signal vary with time, even without considering system noise. As a result, the circular Lissajous figure becomes elliptical, with wide lines. We propose and experimentally demonstrate a method for compensating quadrature detection error, based on digital signal processing to deal with scaling and fitting. In scaling, fluctuations in the amplitudes of in-phase and quadrature signals are compensated, and the scaled signals are fitted to a Lissajous unit circle. To do so, we scale the average fluctuation, remove the offset, and fit the ellipse to a unit circle. Our measurements of a target moving with uniform velocity show that we reduce quadrature detection error from 5 to 2 nanometers.

  • Anomalously large real space charge transfer through thick barries in GaAs asymmetric double quantum wells is studied by photoluminesence exitation. This inter-well excitonic transfer is very large when the barrier is the Al0.3Ga0.7As alloy, but disappears when the barrier is GaAs/AlAs digital alloy with an equivalent Al concentration of 0.28. These resilts combined with observed x and barrier thickness depence suggest that the spatial fluctuation of the atomic arrangment of Ga and Al in the alloy may be responsible for this transfer. This picture is supported by the quantum mechanical calculation in three dimensions which takes into account the side fluctuation effects.
