A fiber-optic temperature sensor utilizing an optical absorption device (InP) was fabricated. The spectrum of transmitted light through an InP device was obtained at the three temperatures(249 K, 369 K). A stabilized LED(light emmiting diode) driver, photoreceiver, and signal proocessing electronics were designed. An intensity referencing technique was adopted in order to minimize the fluctuation of output signal due to external pertubation of the transmitting optical fiber. The optical absorption edge of the InP device moves to longer wavelength at a rate of 0.42 nm / K, and energy gap of InP is 1.35 eV at room temperature. From these results, it is concluded that the InP device has temperature dynamic range of 300 K with LED of center wavelength of 940nm and spectral width of 50nm. The designed fiber-optic temperature sensor system showed good linearity within the temperature range from -30$^{\circ}C$ to + 150$^{\circ}C$.

The fiber optical temperature sensing device was developed by using a Fiber Bragg Grading (FBG) sensor and a linear transmittance optical filter. The temperature change causes change in the FBG sensor reflectance wavelength and the reflectance wavelength from FBG sensor is transmitted to a linear transmittance filter so that the optical signal value is determined by the wavelength. The temperature can be measured by the optical signal value by passing FBG reflectance wavelength to the linear transmittance filter. Using the developed system, temperature ranges from $10^{\circ}C$ to $50^{\circ}C$ were measured and the measured data were almost linear.
We propose a simple ultraviolet (UV) sensor consisting of a conventional single-mode optical fiber capped with an azobenzene-moiety-containing polymer. The UV light changes the dimensions of the azobenzene polymer, as well as the refractive index of the material. Incident light with a wavelength of 1550 nm was reflected at the fiber/polymer and polymer/air interfaces, and interference of the reflected beams resulted in spectral interference that shifted the wavelength by 0.78 nm at a UV input power of $2.5mW/cm^2$. The UV sensor's response to wavelength is nonlinear and stable. The response speed of the sensor is limited by detection noise, which can be improved by modifying the insertion loss of the UV sensor and the signal-to-noise ratio of the detection system. The proposed compact UV sensor is easy to fabricate, is not susceptible to electromagnetic interference, and only reacts to UV light.
Femtosecond laser machining has been applied for creating a sensor function in silica glass optical fibers. Femtosecond laser pulses make it possible to fabricate micro structures in processed regions of a very thin glass fiber line because femtosecond laser pulses can extremely minimize thermal effects. With the laser machining to optical fiber using a single shot of 210-fs laser at a wavelength of 800 nm, it was observed that a processed region surrounded a thin layer which seemed to be a hollow cavity monitored by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). This study aims at a theoretical investigation for the processed region by using a numerical analysis in order to embed sensing function to optical fibers. Numerical methods based finite element method (FEM) has been used for an optical waveguide modeling. This report suggests two types modeling and describes a comparative study on optical losses obtained by the experiment and the numerical analysis.
When the charged particle travels in transparent medium with a velocity greater than that of light in the same medium, the electromagnetic field close to the particle polarizes the medium along its path, and then the electrons in the atoms follow the waveform of the pulse which is called as Cerenkov light or radiation. This type of radiation can be easily observed in a spent fuel storage pit. In optical fibers, the Cerenkov light also can be generated due to their dielectric components. Accordingly, the radiation-induced light signals can be obtained using optical fibers without any scintillating material. In this study, to measure the intensities of Cerenkov radiation induced by gamma-rays, we have fabricated the fiber-optic Cerenkov radiation sensor system using silica optical fibers, plastic optical fibers, multi-anode photomultiplier tubes, simulated spent fuel assembly and a scanning system. To characterize the Cerenkov radiation generated in optical fibers, the intensities of Cerenkov radiation generated in the silica and plastic optical fibers were measured. Also, we measured the longitudinal distribution of gamma rays emitted from the Ir-192 isotope by using the fiber-optic Cerenkov radiation sensor system and simulated spent fuel assembly.

This paper is focused on practical applicability of the optical fiber sensor considering the machine center which is going to use them. Optical fibers may be fluctuated because the machine center operates as column moving type. This causes distortion of the sensor output signal. To reduce this problem, we have improved the sensor structure and its bracket. And we evaluated performances of the sensor.

In this paper, to detect exciting frequency on the latticed fence structure, fiber optic sensor using Sagnac interferometer was fabricated and tested. The latticed structure fabricated with dimension of 180 cm wide and 180 cm high, the optical fiber, 50 m in length, distributed and fixed on the latticed structure. Single mode fiber, a laser with 1,550 m wavelength, and $3{\times}3$ coupler were used. Excited vibration signal applied to the latticed structure from 200 Hz to 1 KHz. The detected optical signals were compared to the detected acceleration signals and analyzed on the time and frequency domain. Based on the experimental results, fiber optic sensor using Sagnac interferometer detected exciting frequency, effectively. This system can be applied to the structural health monitoring system.

In this paper, high speed fiber optic sensor weigh-in motion (WIM) system is proposed. Bragg gratings which have several advantages such as good reproducibility and good multiplicity compare to other optical fiber sensors are used for the system. Fabry-Perot filter for the signal process, which cannot be used in the high speed measurement because of the limitation in fast operation of PZT, is excluded. A new signal processing system which employs bandwidth filter is proposed and bridge type new sensor package design is also proposed. Design of the mold supporter is modified to round shape and then supporting points do not change. The data from the fiber sensors show identical and linear behavior to the axle weight. The proposed fiber optic WIM system is tested in the laboratory and experimented with actual trucks. The new concept of calibration is introduced and calculated by the experiments. The calibrated weight data show good approximations to real axial weights regardless the velocities of the truck.
A novel fiber-optic sensor system is suggested in which fiber Bragg grating sensors are demodulated by a wavelength-sweeping fiber laser source and a spectrometer. The spectrometer consists of a diffraction grating and a 512-pixel photo-diode array. The reflected Bragg wavelength information is transformed into spatial intensity distribution on the photo-diode array. The peak locations linearly correspond to the Bragg wavelengths, regardless of the nonlinearities in the wavelength tuning mechanism of the fiber laser. The high power density of the fiber laser enables obtaining high signal-to-noise ratio outputs. The improved demodulation characteristics were experimentally demonstrated with a fiber Bragg grating sensor array with 5 gratings. The sensor outputs were in much more linear fashion compared with the conventional tunable band-pass filter demodulation. Also it showed advantages in signal processing, due to the high level of photo-diode array signals, over the broadband light source system, especially in measurement of fast varying dynamic physical quantities.
