This paper describes a multiplexed-multivariate fiber-optic interferometric sensor system with remote sensing capability. Signal processor of the implemented sensor system is designed as a digital fringe counter that is well adapted to the signal processing of the remote fiber-optic Fabry-Perot interferometric sensor array. By summing up the reported optical data of the optical fiber, a guideline for choosing the optical effect suitable for a specific measurand is presented. As an example, a pressure sensing device that utilizes the strain-optic effect of the optical fiber by attaching it onto a stainless steel diaphragm of which diameter is 4.3 cm, is built and attached to the sensor system. The changes in optical phase difference of the fiber-optic Fabry-Perot interferometric press ure sensor while filling a water tank 2 meters high, was counted by the half-fringe counting signal processor. Test results showed that the measurement error is less than ${\pm}3.6\;cm$ over the measured range of 2 meters.

The objective of this research is to develop real-time failure detection techniques for damage assessment of composite materials using optical fiber sensors. Signals from matrix cracking or fiber fracture in composite laminates are treated by signal processing unit in real-time. This paper describes the implementation of time-frequency analysis such as the Short Time Fourier Transform(STFT) to determine the time of occurrence of failure. In order to verify the performance of the optical fiber sensor for stress wave detection, we performed pencil break test with EFPI sensor and compared it with that of PZT. The EFPI sensor was embedded in composite beam to sense the failure signals and a tensile test was performed. The signals of the fiber optic sensor when damage occurred were characterized using STFT and wavelet transform. Failure detection system detected the moment of failure accurately and showed good sensitivity with the infinitesimal failure signal.

We have focused on the development of a fiber optic BOTDA (Brillouin Optical Time Domain Analysis) sensor system in order to measure temperature distributed on large structures. Also, we present a feasibility study of the fiber optic sensor to monitor the distributed temperature on a building construction. A fiber optic BOTDA sensor system, which has a capability of measuring the temperature distribution, attempted over several kilometers of long fiber paths. This simple fiber optic sensor system employs a laser diode and two electro-optic modulators. The optical fiber of the length of 1400 m was installed on the surfaces of the building. The change of the distributed temperature on the building construction was well measured by this fiber optic sensor. The temperature changed normally up to 4℃ through one day.

An optical fiber sensor is capable of nondestructive measurement of a structure and it has an advantage of the immunity to electromagnetic interference because light is not affected by electromagnetic wave. In addition, if optical fibers are buried in an object like a concrete, this sensor tan analyze defects and physical status of the object without disassembling it. Especially, the fiber Bragg grating sensor is a promising optical fiber sensor capable of nondestructive test of such an object. A fiber Bragg grating has the characteristics of reflecting or blotting light of a specific wavelength. If we apply physical quantity like strain to the fiber Bragg grating, the center wavelength of the reflected light is shifted and then we can find the physical quantity applied to the fiber Bragg grating by measuring the center wavelength shift of the reflected light. The fiber Bragg grating sensor capable ot static and dynamic strain measurement is being used in health-monitoring of buildings, structures, etc. Recently increasing is interest in dynamic strain measurement inevitable to the civil structures such as roads and bridges. In this study we implemented the optical fiber sensor system which can measure dynamic strain at multiple points using Fabry-Perot wavelength demodulation. And we measured the static and dynamic strain using this sensor system with a test structure(cantilever). Measurement results were similar to those obtained with the conventional electrical measurement methods.

Optical communication according to request of technology of communications and optical fiber to be full filed faster communication and pass over transmission capacity limit per unit area, per unit hour appeared, and this optical fiber acts the biggest role to influence performance of optical communication network. Optical fiber(PMF Polarization Maintaining Fiber) is used, and is used by electric field measurement, self-discipline measurement, sensor(Sensor) Department by high definition measure such as thermometry and storehouse component that use because make broad sense status and polarized light information in passageway and union with storehouse integrated circuit etc. that use broad sense interference developing could transmit in state that keep transmitting broad sense plane of polarization is polarized light existence. Also, research is developed by optical fiber for Coherent communication recently.
A multi purpose environmental monitoring system has been developed as a commercially available standard using the techniques which are FBG(Fiber Bragg Grating), Hetero-core spliced fiber optic sensor and etc, for the purposes of monitoring large scaled structures and preserving natural environments. The monitoring system has been tested and evaluated in a possible outdoor condition in view of the full scaled operation at actual sites to be monitored. Additionally, the developed systems in the previous works conveniently provided us with various options of sensor modules intended for monitoring such physical quantities as displacement, distortion, pressure, binary states, and liquid adhesion. In this paper, we extend the previous results to a water leakage detection problem and develop a sensing system as a result. By the experimental study, it is verified that multi-point leakage detection is possible using single line optical fiber.
In this study, we fabricated a plastic optical fiber based sensor which can monitor the respiration of a patient. The circumference changes of the abdomen were measured using a mirror, a light source and optical detectors because the circumferences of the abdomen could be varied with respiration. The intensity of the reflected lights were measured according to the changes of distance between mirror and plastic optical fiber connected to a light source and a photodiode-amplifier system using a Y-coupler. The respiration signals of fiber-optic sensor system were compared with those of the respiratory and temperature transducers of the $BIOPAC^{(R)}$ system. It is expected that a fiber-optic respiration sensor could be developed for real time respiration monitoring during MRI procedure based on this study.

It is essential to measure load transfer mechanism of pile to check the appropriateness of assumptions made for design purpose and to continuously monitor the behavior of pile foundation. Through many attempts to monitor the behavior of super-structure in civil engineering area using several optical fiber sensors have been made, application of optical fiber sensor technology on pile foundation has not been tried up to now. Load transfer of model piles during compression loading was measured by optical fiber sensors and compared with the measurement by strain gauges. Fiber Bragg Grating(FBG) sensor system was used since it has many advantages, such as easy multiplexing, high sensitivity, and simple fabrication. Besides the model pile tests, uniaxial tension test of steel bar and compression tests of mortar specimen were carried out to evaluate the performance of FBG sensors in embedded environments. The shift of refilming wavelength due to the strain in FBG sensor is converted to the strain at sensor location and the dependence between them is 1.28 pm/${\mu}$ strain. FBG sensors embedded in model pile showed a better survivability than strain gauges. Measured results of load transfer by both FBG sensors and strain gauges were similar, but FBG sensors showed a smoother trend than those by strain gauge. Based on the results of model pile test, it was concluded that the use of FBG sensor for strain measurement in pile has a great potential for the analysis of pile load transfer.

Light losses in optical fibers are investigated by a fiber optic OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometry) sensor system to develop fiber optic probes for structural strain measurement. The sensing fibers are manufactured 3 kinds of fibers: one is single mode fiber, and second is multimode fiber, and the third is low-cladding-index fiber. Fiber bending tests are performed to determine the strain sensitivity according to the strain of gage length of optical fibers. In the result of this experiments, the strain sensitivity of the single mode fiber was shown the highest value than others. The fiber optic strain probe was manufactured to verify the feasibility of the structural strain measurement. In this test, the fiber optic strain probe of the OTDR sensor could be easily made by the single mode fiber.

This paper reports a preliminary experimental investigation and characterization of an optical fiber-based submersion sensor system for applications in water flooding and leakage. The sensor system comprises a multi-mode fiber spliced with fiber Bragg grating and an intensity-based interrogator. Submersion tests were conducted in water-air and Glycerin-air environments. By the refractive index of the fiber-probe surrounding materials, the reflectance and the detecting power level is determined. When the probe is dipped into the water, the optical output power dramatically decreases from -7.5dBm to -17.5dBm. But, the center of Bragg wavelength is not affected in spite of external material changes. Temporal response characteristics of the sensor system is investigated to verify the real-time reaction. When the probe is immersed into the liquid, there is no transition time.
