Room Temperature Chemical Vapor Deposition for Fabrication of Titania Inverse Opals: Fabrication, Morphology Analysis and Optical Characterization

  • This paper demonstrates room temperature chemical vapor deposition (RTCVD) for fabricating titania inverse opals. The colloidal crystals of monodisperse polymer latex spheres were used as a sacrificial template. Titania was deposited into the interstices between the colloidal spheres by altermate exposures to water and titanium tetrachloride (Ti$Cl_4$) vapors. The deposition was achieved under atmospheric pressure and at room temperature. Titania inverse opals were obtained by burning out the colloidal template at high temperatures. The filling fraction of titania was controlled by the number of deposition of Ti$Cl_4$ vapor. The morphology of inverse opals of titania were investigated. The optical reflection spectra revealed a photonic band gap and was used to estimate the refractive index of titania.

High Optical Performance of 7" Mini-monitor Based on 2D-3D Convertible Autostereoscopic Display

  • We have developed a 2D-3D convertible 7" autostereoscopic mini-monitor with high 3D quality, in which the parallax barrier LCD is attached on the TFTLCD. The excellent optical performance was achieved by design of the ghost free barrier and precise assembly between the barrier layer and the TFT-LCD panel. Our design principle and fabrication technology suppressed 3D cross-talk and improved viewing angle. In this paper, the design and fabrication process of the 3D mini-monitor are described. The evaluation for the 3D performance is also discussed.

  • The paper represents the fabrication of an electrostatic micro actuator for optical devices. The micro actuator consists of a plate suspended four p+ silicon cantilevers and an electrode on a glass substrate. The cantilever curls down because of the residual stress gradient in p+ silicon. When input voltage is applied between the p+ cantilevers and the electrode. the cantilevers are pulled toward the electrode by the electrostatic force. The displacement of the plate is measured with a laser displacement meter for various input voltage and frequencies.

Optical Performance Degradation Effects by Fabrication Errors of Circular-type Computer Generated Holograms

  • A null test method which relies on a computer generated hologram (CGH) is widely used to measure a large aspheric surface. For precise measurements of the surface shape of an aspheric optics, the CGH must precisely generate a wavefront that can fit on the ideal surface shape of the aspheric optics. If fabrication errors arise in the CGH, an unwanted wavefront will be generated and the measuring result will lack trustworthiness. Thus far, there has been limited research on wavefronts generated by CGH using only linear-type binary grating models. In this study, a theoretical error model of a circular-type zone plate, the most commonly used types for CGH patterns, is suggested. The proposed error model is checked by simulations and experiments.

  • We report on the optimization of the fabrication process of hybrid sol-gel thin film deposition to produce low cost $1 {\times} 16$ splitters for optical communications. We learn that sol-gel film thickness is dependent upon the spinning speeds and viscosity of the sol-gel solutions and refractive index upon the dopant concentrations of Al and Zr in the sol solutions. We could find the optimized physical conditions to achieve the desired thickness of core and cladding layers. We will further carry out the fabrication and measurements of insertion loss, polarization dependent loss (PDL), etc. for the performance of fabricated splitter devices.

  • In this paper, we proposed and demonstrated $1{\times}7$ type plastic optical fiber(POF) coupler incorporating a tapered acrylic cylinder which works optical combining and dividing region. A fabricated POF coupler showd 2.27~3.31 dB of insertion loss for optical combining and 8.67~11.27dB of insertion loss for optical spitting.

  • We designed a multimode interference (MMI) coupler to use in vertical coupling of double layered polymeric waveguides and analyzed the coupling characteristics by comparing our experimental and simulation results. We found that our proposed new structure, a stepped MMI coupler, is effective in vertical coupling between waveguide layers with a short length of MMI and has a high tolerance for the variation in the structure of an MMI coupler that can be induced as errors in the fabrication process.

  • Micromolding methods such as micro-injection molding and micro-compression molding are most suitable for mass production of plastic micro-optics with low cost. In this study, plastic micro-optical components, such as refractive microlenses and diffractive optical elements(DOEs) with various grating patterns, were fabricated using micro-compression molding process. The mold inserts were made by ultrapricision mechanical machining and silicon etching. A micro compression molding system was designed and developed. Polymer powders were used as molded materials. Various defects found during molding were analyzed and the process was optimized experimentally by controlling the governing process parameters such as histories of mold temperature and compression pressure. Mim lenses of hemispherical shape with $250{\mu}m$ diameter were fabricated. The blazed and 4 stepped DOEs with $24{\mu}m$ pitch and $5{\mu}m$ depth were also fabricated. Optical and geometrical properties of plastic molded parts were tested by interferometric technique.

  • An optical transmitter, which is a key component of the optical transmission system, converts the electrical signal to optical signal and consists of a high-speed current-pulse driver for laser diode and low-speed feedback loops that stabilize optical power against aging, power supply voltage fluctuations, and ambient temperature changes. In this paper, the power-stabilizing part, which forms the bulk of the optical transmitter circuitry was designed in integrted circuits. Operational amplifiers and reference voltage generation circuits, which were identified as key building blocks for the power-stabilizing feedback loops, were designed and were subsequently verified through HSPICE simulations. The designed operational amplifier consists of a two-stage folded cascode amplifier and class AB output stage, whereas the reference voltage is obtained by bandgap reference circuits. Finally the power-stabilizing circuitry was laid out based on 3\mu$m CMOS design rules for fabrication.

Chamber Monitoring with Residual Gas Analysis with Self-Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy

  • Plasma processing is an essential process for pattern etching and thin film deposition in nanoscale semiconductor device fabrication. It is necessary to maintain plasma chamber in steady-state in production. In this study, we determined plasma chamber state with residual gas analysis with self-plasma optical emission spectroscopy. Residual gas monitoring of fluorocarbon plasma etching chamber was performed with self-plasma optical emission spectroscopy (SPOES) and various chemical elements was identified with a SPOES system which is composed of small inductive coupled plasma chamber for glow discharge and optical emission spectroscopy monitoring system for measuring optical emission. This work demonstrates that chamber state can be monitored with SPOES and this technique can potentially help maintenance in production lines.
