  • Incoherent broadband optical sources have been applied in various areas such as a light source for optical device characterization, fiber-optic gyroscopes$^{(1)}$ , and spectrum sliced light source in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) system$^{(2)}$ . To utilize the inherent low loss in silica optical fibers, various types of incoherent light sources are being developed. Among the light sources, the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) from a rare earth doped fiber has benefits in temperature stability, high output power, low polarization dependence over semiconductor diodes$^{(3)}$ . Recently erbium doped fibers (EDF) have been intensively researched for ASE sources as well as optical amplifiers$^{(4)}$ . The spectrum of ASE from an EDF, however, is limited in the 1520~1560 nm range in conventional configurations. In this letter we described a new broadband ASE source which included both the conventional ASE band of Er$^{3+}$ ion, 1520nm~1560nm and ASE band from Tm$^{3+}$ ions that extends the bandwidth further. For the first time, to the best knowledge of authors, a fiber ASE source based on the energy transfer between Er$^{3+}$ and Tm$^{3+}$ ions in the range of 1460~1550 nm, has been demonstrated using a single 980nm pump laser diode. Effect of Photo-darkening on the Response Time of PbSe Quantum-dots Doped Optical Fiber

  • We fabricated silica glass optical fiber containing PbSe quantum-dots (QD) of average size 3.2 nm. The response time of the PbSe-QD doped optical fiber was measured to be around 200 ps. However, after exposure to 1064 nm laser emission for 15 minutes, the response time dramatically reduced to around 2.5 ps, which may be due to photo-darkening effect.

Fourier Modal Method for Optical Dipole Radiation in Photonic Structures

  • An extended Fourier modal method (FMM) for optical dipole radiation in three-dimensional photonic structures is proposed. The core elements of the proposed FMM are the stable bidirectional scattering-matrix algorithm for modeling internal optical emission, and a novel optical-dipole-source model that prevents numerical errors induced by the Gibbs phenomenon. Through the proposed scheme, the FMM is extended to model a wide range of source-embedded photonic structures.

PLD 법을 이용해 제작한 ZnO 박막의 광학적 특성 (Optical Properties of ZnO Thin Films deposited by Pulsed Laser Deposition)

  • 펄스 레이저 증착법을 이용하여 ZnO 박막을 quartz 기판 위에 증착하였으며, 기판 온도에 따른 박막의 구조적 및 광학적 특성을 조사하였다. 기판 온도 변화에 관계없이 모든 박막이 (002) 방향으로 성장하였으며, 400 $^{\circ}C$ 에서 반가폭은 0.24$^{\circ}$로 가장 우수한 결정성을 갖는 박막이 제작되었다. 또, 박막의 발광 특성을 조사한 결과, 모든 박막에서 UV 발광 피크와 deep-level 발광 피크가 관찰되었으며, 기판 온도에 따른 발광 피크의 변화가 관찰되었다. 가장 우수한 UV 발광 특성은 400 $^{\circ}C$ 에서 관찰되었으며, 반가폭은 14 nm 였다. 기판 온도에 무관하게 가시광 영역에서 약 85 % 정도의 투과도를 나타내었다. 투과도 측정을 통하여 얻은 광학 밴드갭 에너지와 UV 발광 중심 값을 비교한 결과, 두가지 결과 값들이 서로 유사한 값을 나타냈다. 이로부터 UV 발광 중심 값이 ZnO 의 near band edge emission 을 나타낸다는 사실을 알 수 있었다.

  • 절연성 및 전도성 12CaO ${\cdot}7Al_2O_3$ (Cl2A7)이 도핑된 ITO 박막을 유리기판 위에 radio frequency(rt) magnetron 스퍼터링 방법으로 절연성 및 전도성 Cl2A7 타겟 칩의 개수를 변화시키면서 증착하였다. 이러한 박막들의 구조적, 전기적, 광학적 특성을 살펴보았다. Cl2A7 타겟 칩의 개수가 증가함에 따라 박막의 캐리어 농도는 감소하고, 비저항은 증가하였다. 박막의 광 투과도는 가시광 영역에서는 80% 이상의 값으로 나타났다. Grain의 크기의 변화는 결정성과 표면 거칠기에 크게 영향을 미친다는 것이 확인되었다.

BaTiO3 타겟의 R.F. 방전 중 변수에 따른 광반사분광 특성 (Optical Emission Spectroscopy with Parameters During R.F. Discharge of BaTiO3 Target)

  • In this study, optical emission spectroscopy was used to monitor the plasma produced during the RF magnetron sputtering of a $BaTiO_3$ target. The intensities of chemical species were measured by real time monitoring with various discharge parameters such as RF power, pressure, and discharge gas. The emission lines of elemental and ionized species from $BaTiO_3$ and Ti targets were analyzed to evaluate the film composition and the optimized growth conditions for $BaTiO_3$ films. The emissions from Ar(I, II), Ba(I, II) and Ti(I) were found during sputtering of the $BaTiO_3$ target in Ar atmosphere. With increasing RF power, all the line intensities increased because the electron density increased with increasing RF power. When the Ar pressure increased, the Ba(II) and Ti(I) line intensity increased, but the $Ar^+$ line intensity decreased with increasing pressure. This result shows that high pressure is of greater benefit for the ionization of Ba than for that of Ar. Oxygen depressed the intensity of the plasma more than Ar did. When the Ar/$O_2$ ratio decreased, the intensity of Ba decreased more sharply than that of Ti. This result indicates that the plasma composition strongly depends on the discharge gas atmosphere. When the oxygen increased, the Ba/Ti ratio and the thickness of the films decreased. The emission spectra showed consistent variation with applied power to the Ti target during co-sputtering of the $BaTiO_3$ and Ti targets. The co-sputtered films showed a Ba/Ti ratio of 1.05 to 0.73 with applied power to the Ti target. The films with different Ba/Ti ratios showed changes in grain size. Ti excess films annealed at $600^{\circ}C$ did not show the second phase such as $BaTi_2O_5$ and $TiO_2$.

Optical Properties of ZnO Soccer Ball Structures by Using Vapor Phase Transport

  • ZnO was grown on a Au-catalyzed Si(100) substrate by using a simple vapor phase transport (VPT) with a mixture of zinc oxide and graphite powders. The ZnO grown at 800$^{\circ}C$ had a soccer ball structure with diameters of <500 nm. The ZnO soccer ball structure was, for the first time, observed in this work. The optical properties of the ZnO soccer balls were investigated by photoluminescence (PL). In the room-temperature (RT) PL of the ZnO soccer balls, a strong near-band-edge emission (NBE) and a weak deep-level emission were observed at 3.25 and 2.47 eV (green emission), respectively. The weak deep-level emission (DLE) at around 2.47 eV (green emission) is caused by impurities and structural defects. The FWHM of the NBE peak from the ZnO soccer balls was 110 meV. In addition, the PL intensity ratio of the NBE to DLE was about 4. The temperature-dependent PL was also carried out to investigate the mechanism governing the quenching behavior of the PL spectra.

OPTICAL EMISSION SPECTROSCOPY OF Ch$_4$/Ar/H$_2$ GAS DISCHARGES IN RF PLASMA CVD OF HYDROGENATED AMORPHOUS CARBON FILMS

  • Hydrogenated amorphous carbon(a-C:H) films are prepared by rf plasma CVD in a $CH_4$ source gas system diluted with Ar of $H_2$. The spectra of emissive and reactive species in the plasma are detected using in stiu optical emission spectroscopy. Inaddition, the relationship between the film properties which can be varied by the deposition parameters and the Raman spectra is studied. In the $CH_4/H_2$ gas system, the emission intensities of CH and $H \tau$ decrease and those of $H \alpha$, $H \beta$, $C_2$ and Ar increase with increasing $H_2$ concentration, The formation of $C_2$ and CH in the $CH_4/Ar/H_2$ gas system is greatly suppressed by hydrogen addition and the excess of hydrogen addition is found to form graphite structure. The $C_2$ formation in the gas phase enhances a-C:H film formation.

Field Emission Characteristics a-C:F:N Film Deposited by Inductively Coupled Plasma Chemical Vapor Deposition

  • Amorphous fluorocarbon (a-C:F) is of interest for low dielectric interlayer material, but in this work we applied this material to FED field emitter. N-doped a-C:F films were deposited by inductively coupled plasma chemical vapor deposition (ICPCVD). The Raman spectra were measured to study the film structure and inter-band optical absorption coefficients were measured using Perkin-Elmer UV-VIS-IR spectrophotometer and optical band gap was obtained using Tauc's plot. XPS spectrum and AFM image were investigated to study bond structure and surface morphology. Current-electric field(I-E) characteristic of the film was measured for the characterization of electron emission properties. The optimum doping concentration was found to be [N2]/[CF4]=9% in the gas phase. The turn-on field and the emission current density at $[N_2]/[CF_4]$=9% were found to be 7.34V/$\mu\textrm{m}$ and 16 $\mu\textrm{A}/\textrm{cm}^2$ at 12.8V/$\mu\textrm{m}$, respectively.

Effects of Transverse Magnetic Field on Laser-produced Carbon Plasma Plume in Nitrogen Atmosphere

  • By adopting a time-resolved optical emission spectrometry, we have investigated the effects of transverse magnetic field on C2 and CN molecules produced by laser ablation of a graphite target in nitrogen atmosphere. We found that the spectroscopic temperatures of both species, obtained via simulation of the optical emission spectra, as well as their emission intensities from the electronically excited states increased significantly in the presence of a magnetic field. The cyclotron radii and frequencies for electrons and ions were estimated to explain the increase in the number of collisions in the laser-produced carbon plasma plume under a magnetic field.
