Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the validity of swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) for detecting sealant microleakage. Materials and Methods: A total of 31 extracted sound human molar, assigned as suitable for sealant application, were chosen and divided into two groups: (1) no microleakage group and (2) microleakage group by applying sealant using the different methods. All specimens were immersed in 1% methylene blue for 24 h and sectioned to confirm the absence or presence of sealant microleakage as a gold standard method. Subsequently, all the sectioned specimens were digitally photographed using a microscope with a magnification of ${\times}50$. Presence of microleakage was evaluated on a 2-point rating scale. The association of histological method with conventional methods (visual and tactile assessment) and SS-OCT was assessed using a chi-squared test. The intra- and inter-examiner reliability was calculated using Cohen's Kappa. Results: The SS-OCT showed a sensitivity of 0.73 and a specificity of 1.00, while visual and tactile assessment showed a sensitivity of 0.67 and a specificity of 0.86. The inter-examiner reliability of SS-OCT was 0.79, whereas that of the visual and tactile assessment was 0.53. Conclusions: SS-OCT can be used to non-invasively detect sealant microleakage and to monitor pit and fissure sealant in the clinics.
We propose a novel application of optical coherence tomography (OCT) to monitor pit formation in laser irradiated optical storage materials. A multilayer optical storage recordable compact disk, is composed of multiple layers, each of different structure. Disks were irradiated with aQ-Switched Nd:YAG laser with an energy of 373 mJ. Post-irradiated disks were evaluated by OCT and those images were compared with optical microscopy. Our results indicate that OCT is a useful instrument to investigate pit formation in multilayer optical storage disks and might also provide information to optimize optical memory technology.
Optical-based imaging technology has high resolution and can assess images in real time. Numerous studies have been conducted for its application in the dental field. The current research introduces an oral camera that includes fluorescent imaging, a second study examining a 3D intraoral scanner applying a confocal method and a polarization structure that identifies the 3D image of a tooth, and finally, an optical coherence tomography technique. Using this technique, we introduce a new concept 3D oral scanner that simultaneously implements 3D structural imaging as well as images that diagnose the inside of teeth. With the development of light source technology and detector technology, various optical-based imaging technologies are expected to be applied in dentistry.
We developed a real-time screening system using optical coherence tomography (OCT) to distinguish the fruitful melon seeds efficiently. Cross-section images of melon seeds infected with Cucumber green mottle mosaic virus (CGMMV) showed an additional layer that did not appear in normal seeds. Additional layer appeared under $100{\sim}300{\mu}m$ from the surface of the seed. OCT can visualize the micro-structural and morphological changes of the internal seed structure. Real-time OCT seed screening system provided the real-time, non-destructive, cross-section image and quantitative information such as A-scan analysis of selected region in the cross-section image. We can distinguish the viral infection seeds while monitoring the averaged A-scan analysis graph in real-time by considering the second peak value of the graph which refers to the layer that occurred owing to the virus. Real-time OCT seed screening system could assist to distinguish the disease caused by CGMMV.
We construct and test the polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography (PS-OCT) system for imaging porcine and human articular cartilages. PS-OCT is a new imaging technology that provides information regarding not only the tissue structures but tissue components that show birefringence such as collagen. In this study, we measure the cartilage thickness of the porcine joint and the phase retardation due to collagen birefringence. Also, we demonstrate that changes of the collagen fiber orientation could be detected by the PS-OCT system. Finally, differences between normal and damaged human articular cartilage are observed using the PS-OCT system, which is then compared with the regular histology pictures. As a result, the PS-OCT system is proven to be effective for diagnosis of the pathology related to the cartilage. In the future, this technology may be used for discrimination of the collagen types. When combined with endoscope technologies, the PS-OCT images may become a useful tool for in vivo tissue testing.
