Using receiver eigenmodes, we perform a time-dependent analysis of optical receivers whose optical inputs are corrupted by the amplified spontaneous emission. We use Gaussian receivers for the analysis with Gaussian input pulses. We find the number of contributing eigenmodes increases as the measurement time moves from the pulse center towards the pulse edges at the output of the optical receiver's electrical filter. This behavior is dependent on the bandwidth ratio between the optical and the electrical filters as well as the input pulse's time width.
The optical window, as a part of the collimator system, is the connector between the outside light source and the optical system inside a vacuum tank. The temperature and pressure difference between the two sides of the optical window cause not only thermoelastic deformation, but also refractive-index irregularities. To suppress the influence of these two changes on the performance of the collimator system, thermo-optical analysis is employed. Coefficients that characterize the deformations and refractive-index distributions are derived through finite-element analysis, and then imported into the collimator system using a user-defined surface in ZEMAX. The temperature and pressure difference imposed on the window seriously degrade the system performance of the collimator. A decentered and tilted lens group is designed to correct both field aberrations and the thermal effects of the window. Through lens-interval adjustment of the lens group, the diffraction-limited performance of the collimator can be maintained with a vacuum level of 10-5 Pa and inside temperature ranging from -100 ℃ to 20 ℃.

In this paper, the failure analysis of an optical disk drive is carried out and the limit ranges of the misalignment f3r the higher performance are presented. Since optical disks are removable from optical disk drive, the translational and angular misalignments, which causes read/write errors, always exist. Therefore, the limit ranges of the misalignment should be investigated. For this reason, the failure analysis by the vibration analysis is studied. The influences of the misalignment are tested by the aging test. And the limit ranges of the misalignment are proposed for the reliability of optical disk drives.
There are many kinds of optical systems to widen a field of view. Fisheye lenses with view angles of 180 degrees and omni-directional systems with the view angles of 360 degrees are recognized as proper systems to widen a field of view. In this study, we proposed a new optical system to overcome drawbacks of conventional omni-directional systems such as a limited field of view in the central area and difficulties in manufacturing. Thus we can eliminate the undesirable reflection components of the omni-directional system and solve the primary drawback of the conventional system. Finally, tolerance analysis using Zernike polynomial coefficients was performed to confirm the productivity of the new optical system. Furthermore, we established a method of optical axis alignment and compensation schemes for the proposed optical system as a result of tolerance analysis. In a sensitivity calculation, we investigated performance degradation due to manufacturing error using Code V(R) macro function. Consequently, we suggested compensation schemes using a lens group decentering. This paper gives a good guidance for the optical design and tolerance analysis including the compensation method in the extremely wide angle system.

Optical performance evaluation results and an interference fringe pattern analysis of alignment errors for an optical head of a near-field receding (NFR) system are presented. The focusing unit is an optical head of a NFR system and is composed of a solid immersion lens (SIL) and an objective lens (OL). Generally, the size of the focusing unit is smaller than that of the conventional optical recording head. Hence there are difficulties to assemble the small focusing unit precisely. We composed an evaluation system with an interferometer and evaluated some focusing unit samples aligned and assembled by manual and present the obtained results. Using the conventional optical tool, Code V, a tolerance analysis of the alignment error between the SIL and the objective lens and an interference pattern analysis for the assembly error are executed. Then, through an analysis of the simulation results, the conceptual auto-alignment methodology using a neural network approach is considered.

As optical disk drives become designed for portable and hostile environment, higher storage density and smaller size, optical disk drives have a possibility to miss the track and not to read the data. This paper presents the modeling of an optical disk drive as 3-DOF system. Optical disk drives are tested with a linear drop test device and their results are compared with simulation results in order to verify the shock analysis. Finally, this paper shows shock response of a optical disk drive with changes of parameters

Optical equipment consists of various components, and a detector is mounted and operated on aircraft, tanks, and warships for target detection and classification. The structural stability and optical performance of aeronautical optical equipment operated at several kilometers of altitude are degraded owing to vibration generated in the aircraft. It is necessary to verify the structural stability and optical performance requirements of the equipment in vibration environment conditions during the design phase. In this study, vibration environment conditions were analyzed using a test standard and the measurements of the vibration generated in aircraft. The conditions were classified as endurance and operating vibration conditions for structural stability and optical performance verification, respectively. The structural stability was verified according to natural frequency analysis, response analysis for the endurance vibration condition, and static analysis. The optical performance was verified by applying the vibration response analysis results to the optical design/analysis program.

In optical disk drive(ODD), pickup actuator, which comprises a key part of an optical disk drive equipment. must be thin. compact, and high sensitive. Low tilt is also an important requirement for the actuator, since optical disks are to high density. This tilt occurs from around the axis parallel to the tangential and radial direction of the disk. The main reason of the moment is the coupling effect between focus driving system and tracking driving system. This paper analyzed tut quantity due to focusing and tracking force through coupled fields analysts with electromagnetic analysis and structural analysis.

An electro-optical camera system consists of many subsystems such as the optics, the detector, and the electronics and so on. They may create variations in the processed image that were not present original scene. The performance analysis of the electro-optical camera system is a mathematical construct that provides an optimum design through appropriate trade off analysis. The SNR(Signal to Noise Ratio) is one of the most important performance for the electro-optical camera system. The SNR analysis shown in this paper is performed based on the practical high resolution satellite camera design. For the purpose of the practical camera design, the analysis assumes that the defined radiance, which is calculated for the Korean peninsula, reached directly to the telescope entrance. In addition, the actual operation concept such as integration time and the normal operation altitude is assumed. This paper compares the SNR analysis results according to the various camera characteristics such as the optics, the detector, and the camera electronics. In detail, the optical characteristics can be split into the focal length, F#, transmittance, and so on. And the system responsivity, the quantum efficiency, the TDI stages, the quantization noise and the analogue noise can be used for the detector and the camera electronics characteristics. Finally this paper suggests the optimum design to apply the practical electro-optical system.
Femtosecond laser machining has been applied for creating a sensor function in silica glass optical fibers. Femtosecond laser pulses make it possible to fabricate micro structures in processed regions of a very thin glass fiber line because femtosecond laser pulses can extremely minimize thermal effects. With the laser machining to optical fiber using a single shot of 210-fs laser at a wavelength of 800 nm, it was observed that a processed region surrounded a thin layer which seemed to be a hollow cavity monitored by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). This study aims at a theoretical investigation for the processed region by using a numerical analysis in order to embed sensing function to optical fibers. Numerical methods based finite element method (FEM) has been used for an optical waveguide modeling. This report suggests two types modeling and describes a comparative study on optical losses obtained by the experiment and the numerical analysis.
