  • In a continuously expanding wireless world, the number of radio systems increases every day and efficient spectrum usage becomes a more significant requirement. Ultra-wideband (UWB) and cognitive radio are two exciting technologies that offer new approaches to the spectrum usage. The main objective of this paper is to shed the first light on the marriage of these two important approaches. The strength of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) based UWB in co-existing with licensed systems is investigated. The opportunity concept is defined, and the requirements of the opportunistic spectrum usage are explained. It is proposed to take the UWB-OFDM from the current underlay implementation, and evolve it to a combined underlay and opportunistic spectrum usage technology, leading to cognitive UWB-OFDM. This way, we aim at making UWB more competitive in the wireless market with extended range, higher capacity, better performance, and a wide variety of applications.

  • OSA(Opportunistic Spectrum Access) allows secondary users not having a license for spectrum usage to opportunistically occupy an idle spectrum owned by a licensee named primary users. We propose two OSA schemes for un-slotted secondary users exploiting spectrum opportunities in un-slotted primary networks. We provide mathematical analysis and simulation results to reveal the impact of various system parameters.

  • opportunistic spectrum access (OSA) allows unlicensed users to share licensed spectrum in space and time with no or little interference to primary users, with bring new research challenges in MAC design. We propose a cognitive MAC protocol using statistical channel information and selecting appropriate idle channel for transmission. The protocol based on the CSMA/CA, exploits statistics of spectrum usage for decision making on channel access. Idle channel availability, spectrum hole sufficiency and available channel condition will be included in algorithm statistical information. The model include the control channel and data channel, the transmitter negotiates with receiver on transmission parameters through control channel, statistical decision results (successful rate of transmission) from exchanged transmission parameters of control channel should pass the threshold and decide the data transmission with spectrum hole on data channel. A dynamical sensing range as a important parameter introduced to maintain the our protocol performance. The proposed protocol's simulation will show that proposed protocol does improve the throughput performance via traditional opportunistic spectrum access MAC protocol.

  • Cognitive radio is a technology, which automatically recognizes and searches for temporally and spatially unused frequency spectrum, then actively determines the communication method, bandwidth, etc. according to the environment, thus utilizing the limited spectrum resources efficiently. In this paper, with the imperfect sensing of misdetection and false alarm, we quantitatively investigate the effects of primary and secondary user's queue on the primary and secondary users' spectrum usage through the analysis of continuous time Markov Chain. With the queue primary user's spectrum usage improved up to 18%, and the secondary user's spectrum usage improved up to 50%.

  • We consider a cognitive network with a primary and a secondary channel. Primary users have higher priority on the usage of the primary channel, and secondary users are allowed to opportunistically access the primary channel at times when the channel is not occupied by primary users. The secondary channel is dedicated only to secondary users. An analytical model is presented to obtain the performance of an opportunistic spectrum access using both the primary and secondary channels, and is validated by simulations.

  • As wireless spectrum resources become more scarce while some portions of frequency bands suffer from low utilization, the design of cognitive radio (CR) has recently been urged, which allows opportunistic usage of licensed bands for secondary users without interference with primary users. Spectrum sensing is fundamental for a secondary user to find a specific available spectrum hole. Cooperative spectrum sensing is more accurate and more widely used since it obtains helpful reports from nodes in different locations. However, if some nodes are compromised and report false sensing data to the fusion center on purpose, the accuracy of decisions made by the fusion center can be heavily impaired. Weighted sequential probability ratio test (WSPRT), based on a credit evaluation system to restrict damage caused by malicious nodes, was proposed to address such a spectrum sensing data falsification (SSDF) attack at the price of introducing four times more sampling numbers. In this paper, we propose two new schemes, named enhanced weighted sequential probability ratio test (EWSPRT) and enhanced weighted sequential zero/one test (EWSZOT), which are robust against SSDF attack. By incorporating a new weight module and a new test module, both schemes have much less sampling numbers than WSPRT. Simulation results show that when holding comparable error rates, the numbers of EWSPRT and EWSZOT are 40% and 75% lower than WSPRT, respectively. We also provide theoretical analysis models to support the performance improvement estimates of the new schemes.

  • Wireless multimedia service through the access to mobile telephone network or data network is a vital part of contemporary life, and the demand for frequency spectrum for new services is expected to explode as the ubiquitous computing proliferate. Cognitive radio is a technology, which automatically recognizes and searches for temporally and spatially unused frequency spectrum, then actively determines the communication method, bandwidth, etc. according to the environment, thus utilizing the limited spectrum resources efficiently. In this paper, we investigate the effects of imperfect sensing, misdetection and false alarm, on the primary and secondary users' spectrum usage through the analysis of continuous time Markov Chain. We analyzed the effects of the parameters such as sensing error, offered load on the system performance.

  • In wireless communication, efficient spectrum usage is an issue that has been an attractive research area for many technologies. Recently new technologies innovations allow compact radios to transmit with power efficient communication over very long distances. For example, Low-Power Wide Area Networks (LPWANs) are an attractive emerging platform to connect the Internet-of-Things (IoT). Especially, LoRa is one of LPWAN technologies and considered as an infrastructure solution for IoT. End-devices use LoRa protocol across a single wireless hop to communicate to gateway(s) connected to the internet which acts as a bridge and relays message between these LoRa end-devices to a central network server. The use of the (ISM) spectrum sharing for such long-range networking motivates us to implement spectrum sensing testbed for cognitive radio network based on LoRa and GNU radio. In cognitive radio (CR), secondary users (SUs) are able to sense and use this information to opportunistically access the licensed spectrum band in absence of the primary users (PUs). In general, PUs have not been very receptive of the idea of opportunistic spectrum sharing. That is, CR will harmfully interfere with operations of PUs. Subsequently, there is a need for experimenting with different techniques in a real system. In this paper, we implemented spectrum sensing for cognitive radio networks based on LoRa and GNU Radio, and further analyzed corresponding performances of the implemented systems. The implementation is done using Microchip LoRa evolution kits, USRPs, and GNU radio.
