Purpose: This research provided basic data for refraction by comparing the corrected diopter of trial lens and phoropter. Methods: We compared the corrected diopter of trial lens and phoropter, and analyzed statistical significance and relations of the spherical lens corrected diopter and cylindrical lens corrected diopter according to the types (trial lens and phoropter) of subjective refractive instruments. Also we analyzed statistical significance and relations between cylindrical lens corrected diopter at the astigmatism and the types (trial lens and phoropter) of subjective refractory instruments. Results: When we measured the corrected diopter of simple myopia, the mean value for corrected diopter was S-2.74D using the trial lens and S-2.65D using the phoropter. So the corrected diopter was 0.09D smaller when measured by phoropter. The degree of astigmatism was measured C-0.81D using the trial lens and C-0.77D using the phoropter which showed that the measured value was 0.04D smaller using the phoropter. On correlation analysis between the refractive instruments (trial lens and phoropter) and the corrected diopter, there was significant (p<0.01) strong correlation between refractory machine and corrected spherical diopter (r=0.996) and the correlation between refractory machine and corrected cylindrical diopter was r=0.986 and was also significant (p<0.01). Conclusions: The use of phoropter than trial lens was more desirable when performing refraction on high myopia (simple refractive error, high astigmatism), and when using trial lens, you should consider the vertex distance and the gap between overlapped lenses before prescription.
The Hydroxyethyl methacrylate(HEMA) was developped in 1960's and later the use of contact lenses increased. At present more and more people use RGP contact lenses. Due to the wide range of optical corrections available and due to their high oxygen transmission Japanese and Korean people like them. Nevertheless one of nine CL users(beginners) stopped wearing the CL within the first year. We conducted a survey to evaluate the level of patient compliance in lens care and maintenance and to assess practitioner knowledge of contact lens information. Generally 6% of contact lens wearers drop out per year. The aim of this research was to find out what opticians can do to reduce the drop-out rate by getting information on handling, on general data of the patient and on optical prescription. Lens wearer were asked to complete a 10 question survey that focused on lens care-wear modality, lens replacement, storage, symptoms and case disinfection. There were total 180 participants in the study. Most of contact lens wearers have an inadequate understanding of contact lens care system. Therefore, it is important that contact lens specialists place more emphasis on practitioner education about general contact lens fields and reinforce patient education during the dispensing visit.
Purpose: This purpose of study is to investigate the effect of UV-A-blocking or brown-tinted ophthalmic lens against A2E photooxidation which known as one of the etiologies of AMD(Age-related macular degenaration). Methods: The photooxidation of A2E, synthetic product of two molecules of all-trans-retinal and ethanolamine, was induced by the exposure to blue light (420~470 nm, $94mW/cm^2$) for 3 minutes. The inhibitory effect of UVblocking or brown-tinted ophthalmic lens against A2E photooxidation was evaluated by UV absorbance and HPLC analysis of remained A2E after the exposure to blue light. Results: UV-blocking ophthalmic lens could not inhibit A2E photooxidation induced by blue light irradiation. There was no difference in A2E photooxidation in the presence of brown-tinted ophthalmic lens to block 15% of visible ray, however, those lenses blocking 55% or 86% of visible ray showed the inhibitory effect of A2E photooxidation as 9.98% and 16.55%, respectively. By HPLC analysis, the amount of residual A2E which was not blocked by any lens was $199.29{\pm}26.53{\mu}M$, however, the inhibitory effect against A2E photooxidation was shown in the presence of brown-tinted lens. The remained A2Es were $264.58{\pm}31.91{\mu}M$ and $402.93{\pm}28.68{\mu}M$ in brown-tinted lenses of 55% and 86% blocking visible ray, respectively. However, there was no inhibitory effect against A2E photooxidation in the case of UV-blocking lens by HPLC analysis. Conclusions: In this study, brown-tinted ophthalmic lens was confirmed to have the inhibitory effect against the photooxidation of A2E, a causing substance of AMD onset.
We studied the method which would determine the appropriate additive damping factor for the damped least sequres(DLS) optimization. We calculated eigenvalues of the product of the Jacobian matrix of error function by using the singular value decomposition(SVD) method. While suitable damping factor was appiled to the additive DLS by using SVD and Gaussian elimination method, the convergence and stability of the optimization process were examined in a triplet-type camera lens-system where the condition number is well conditioned. We compared the convergence and stability of merit function when median, maximum and minimum of eigenvalues were used as a damping factor in the optimization process. When damping factor is median of eigenvalue, the convergence and stability of merit function are more excellent than in the case of two other eigenvalues. Thus, we adopt the median of eigenvalues as an appropriate damping factor. Next, by using SVD and Gaussian elimination method, we compound the convergence and stability of optimization process for triplet-type camera lens-system design. In these two method; triplet-type camera lens-system in which condition number is well conditioned, has little improvement with the combination of DLS and SVD.
The aim of this study was to investigate the ability for wearers in adapting to the Pure Vision contact lens. Methods: Subjects consisted of 78 university students who were analyzed by subjective and objective methods. During each day of use or extended wear, results relative to clinically adapt were analyzed over a period of one week. Results: 1. Visual function status Good 62.3%, Moderate 27.2%, Bad 10.6% 2. Side affects No sensation 76.12%, Moderate sensation 18.21%, Excessive sensation 6.5% 3. Lens handling ability Skillful 97.44%, Difficult 2.56% 4. Understanding Pure Vision lens characteristics 50.64% understood very well Conclusions: Most Pure Vision contant lens wearers had a good clinical response both subjectively and objectively but about one half did not understand fully the lens characteristics.
In this study, We measured transmittance and color change of various photochromic lens as a function of temperature(6, 12, $28^{\circ}C$), irradiation time of UVA lamp and the types of materials(plastic and glass) and distribution of photochromic ingredients(coated and bulk type). The coated-type photochromic lens showed higher saturated value than bulk-type lens without regard to temperature. And darkening rate of smoke color lenses were higher compare to brown lens in case of glass photochromic lens. All of photochromic lens passed ANSI Z80.3 regulation in transmittance and color independent of temperature. The saturated values of plastic photochromic lens excluded coated-type and glass photochromic lens were ranked as cosmetic use. The saturated value of coated-type. Tbr and TMs were general applications in $6^{\circ}C$ and $12^{\circ}C$, but cosmetic purpose in $28^{\circ}C$. The darkening rate was increased with decreasing temperature, whereas the fading rate became higher with increasing temperature.
Purpose: The changes in properties of plastic lens due to heating was investigated. Methods: Plastic lenses of -2.00 diopter were heated at 60-100$^{\circ}C$, and then changes of refractive power, surface condition and transmittance were examined. Results: It was shown that the changes of lens surface due to heating happened at 70$^{\circ}C$ for 1h, 75$^{\circ}C$ for 10 min and 100$^{\circ}C$ 10 sec, respectively. More serious crack was occurred in high index lens and at higher heating temperature, respectively, and transmittance decreased depending on the extent of the damage on the surface of lens. Conclusions: Heating at temperatures above 70$^{\circ}C$ drives cracks on the surface of lens. Optician should recommend an appropriate lens considering the wearer's working conditions and guide for paying attention when they use eyeglasses.
When we wear contact lenses for correcting astigmatism, we often experience the axis-rotation of contact lenses that is happened in case we could not fit the axis of lens exactly or by the eyelid used to blink. In this case, because the exact correcting state becomes in the wrongly correcting state, the asthenopia is led, and the decline of eyesight can be led. For this reason, we need to know axis-rotating degrees of contact lenses. If a contact lens rotated, a residual astigmatism may be detected in the refraction examination after wearing. Using this, we developed a program that calculates the axis-rotating amount of contact lenses.
The physical and optical properties of polymers with 2-fluoroaniline and 4-fluoroaniline added, which can be used for hydrophilic ophthalmic lenses, were investigated in this study. The UV-blocking properties of 2- and 4-fluoroaniline were also investigated by measuring their UV transmissibility. 2- and 4-Fluoroaniline were used as additives for the basic combination of HEMA, 5% AA, and 1% MMA, and the materials were copolymerized with EGDMA as the cross-linking agent and AIBN as the initiator. The refractive index, water content, optical transmittance, tensile strength, and contact angle were measured to evaluate the physical properties of the produced hydrogel lens. The measured physical properties of the hydrogel contact lens produced with the copolymerized polymer showed a refractive index of 1.425-1.436; a water content of 36.95-44.65%; a visual light transmittance of 66.0-81.0%; a tensile strength of 0.138-0.281 kgf; and a contact angle of $55.02-57.87^{\circ}$. The UV transmissibility was significantly reduced, which indicates that 2-fluoroaniline and 4-fluoroaniline have UV-blocking properties. This study showed that 2- and 4-fluoroaniline are expected to be used as UV-blocking materials in hydrogel ophthalmic lenses whose physical properties, such as their refractive index and water content, do not change.
In this study, materials for spectacle lens cutting were fabricated by hot-pressing and annealing SiC powders with $Al_2O_3$ and $Y_2O_3$. A microstructure that consisted of uniformly distributed, large SiC grains and elongated SiC grains was developed by using ${\alpha}$-SiC powders. The microstructure was observed by scanning electron microscope(SEM). By hot-pressing and subsequent annealing, elongated ${\beta}$-SiC grains were grown via ${\beta}{\rightarrow}{\alpha}$ phase. This is caused the crack deflection as toughening mechanism. Typical hardness and fracture toughness of materials for spectacle lens cutting were 13.3 GPa and $4.8MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$, respectively.
