Implementation of a network-based Real-Time Embedded Linux platform

  • The SoC and digital technology development recently enabled the emergence of information devices and control devices because the SoC present many advantages such as lower power consumption, greater reliability, and lower cost. It is required to use an embedded operating system for building control systems. So far, the Real-Time operating system is widely used to implement a Real-Time system since it meets developer's requirements. However, Real-Time operating systems reveal a lack of standards, expensive development, and license costs. Embedded Linux is able to overcome these disadvantages. In this paper, the implementation of control system platform using Real-Time Embedded Linux is described. As a control system platform, we use XScale of a Soc and build Real-Time control platform using RTAI and Real-Time device driver. Finally, we address the feasibility study of the Real-Time Embedded Linux as a Real-Time operating system for mobile robots.

Improvement in Efficiency and Operating Range of Centrifugal Blower Stage for Sewage Aeration Blower

  • We developed a high-efficiency, wide-operating-range centrifugal blower stage to meet the demand for reduced total energy-consumption in sewage treatment plants. We improved the efficiency of the two-dimensional impeller using a shape optimization tool and one-dimensional performance prediction tool. A limit of the throat deceleration ratio was set to maintain the stall-margin of the impeller. The low solidity vaned diffuser and return channel were designed using a sensitivity analysis with orthogonal arrays and three-dimensional steady flow simulations. The low solidity diffuser was designed in order to improve the performance in the low-flow-rate region. The return channel was designed so that the total pressure loss in the return channel was minimized. Model tests of both the conventional and optimized blower stages were carried out, and the efficiency and operating range of both stages were compared. The optimized blower stage improved in stage efficiency by 3% and in operating range by 5% compared with the conventional blower stage.

  • Liquid metal heat pipes play a critical role in various high-temperature applications, with their optimization being pivotal to achieving optimal thermal performance. In this study, a deep learning based genetic algorithm is suggested to optimize the operating conditions of liquid metal heat pipes. The optimization performance was investigated in both single and multi-variable optimization schemes, considering the operating conditions of heat load, inclination angle, and filling ratio. The single-variable optimization indicated reasonable performance for various conditions, reinforcing the potential applicability of the optimization method across a broad spectrum of high-temperature industries. The multi-variable optimization revealed an almost congruent performance level to single-variable optimization, suggesting that the robustness of optimization method is not compromised with additional variables. Furthermore, the generalization performance of the optimization method was investigated by conducting an experimental investigation, proving a similar performance. This study underlines the potential of optimizing the operating condition of heat pipes, with significant consequences in sectors such as high temperature field, thereby offering a pathway to more efficient, cost-effective thermal solutions.

  • A simple and efficient Lambda logic (${\lambda}-logic$) based algorithm is proposed for the solution of the generator constrained economic dispatch problem when the generating units having prohibited zones. The proposed method solves the economic dispatch (ED) problem that takes into account ramprate limits, transmission losses and prohibited operating zones in the power system operation. The proposed method uses a simple heuristic rule based on average power of prohibited operating zones which produces the feasibility of solution for the restricted operating units. The effectiveness of the algorithm is tested on five different test systems and the performance compared with other relevant methods reported in the literature. In all the cases, the proposed algorithm performs better than the previous existing algorithms with a less computational burden.

  • This paper proposes the new adaptive protection algorithm for inverse-time overcurrent relays (OCRs) to ensure their proper operating time and protective coordination. The application of the proposed algorithm requires digital protection relays with microcontroller and memory. The operating parameters of digital OCRs are adjusted based on the available data whenever system conditions (system with distributed generation (DG)) vary. Moreover, it can reduce the calculation time required to determine the operating parameters for achieving its purpose. To verify its effectiveness, several case studies are performed in time-domain simulation. The results show that the proposed adaptive protection algorithm can keep the proper operating time and provide the protective coordination time interval with fast response.

A new broadband energy harvester using propped cantilever beam with variable overhang

  • Design of piezoelectric energy harvester for a wide operating frequency range is a challenging problem and is currently being investigated by many researchers. Widening the operating frequency is required, as the energy is harvested from ambient source of vibration which consists of spectrum of frequency. This paper presents a new technique to increase the operating frequency range which is achieved by designing a harvester featured by a propped cantilever beam with variable over hang length. The proposed piezoelectric energy harvester is modeled analytically using Euler Bernoulli beam theory and the effectiveness of the harvester is demonstrated through experimentation. The results from analytical model and from experimentation reveal that the proposed energy harvester generates an open circuit output voltage ranging from 36.43 V to 11.94 V for the frequency range of 27.24 Hz to 48.47 Hz. The proposed harvester produces continuously varying output voltage and power in the broadened operating frequency range.

  • Recently, use of adhesive bonding technology is increased to achieve the multi-material design for lightweight structure in automobile industry. In this paper, the fracture strength of adhesive has been studied with the single lap shear test conducted at different temperatures. The joint specimens are made from Al 5052 and SPRC 440 bonded with structural epoxy adhesive. The operating temperature has been considered up to $150[^{\circ}C]$ and the single lap shear test has been conducted with 5mm/min tensile rate. Fracture strength of adhesive bonded joint has been decreased with increase of operating temperature. The fracture strength at the $100[^{\circ}C]$ was shown about half of that at room temperature.

스웨덴 장애인 보조기구 제공 시스템에 대한 소고 (A Report of the Assistive Technology Service Operating System for the Disabled in Sweden)

  • 본 연구에서는 스웨덴의 장애인 보조기구 제공 시스템을 검토하고, 우리나라의 장애인 보장구건강보험 급여정책 대안 마련을 위한 기초자료로서 제공하고자 하였다. 스웨덴에서는 장애인구의 약 10%가 보조기구를 사용하고 있는데, 보조기구 제공을 위해서 중앙정부, 지역정부(란스팅 21개)와 지방정부(콤뮨 290개)의 역할을 명확하게 구분하여 효율적이고 체계적으로 운영하고 있다. 보건사회부 산하의 보건복지국가위원회에서는 지식기반 지침을 개발하고, 장애인정책개발국에서는 장애인 보조기구 정책을 모니터링하며, 장애인 보조기구기술연구소에서는 보조기구 개발연구 및 평가와 보조기구 전시장을 운영한다. 또한, 지역정부(란스팅)와 지방정부(콤뮨)는 보조기구 대여 및 추후관리를 담당하는데, 지역정부(란스팅)별로 보조기구센터를 운영하며 작업치료사, 물리치료사, 심리치료사, 간호사가 처방을 담당한다. 특기할 점은 장애인 보조기구를 무료로 대여하고 추후 관리를 하고 있다는 것과 사용이 끝난 보조기구는 회수하여 재활용을 하고 있다는 것이다. 또한, 처방자격자가 장애진단 담당의(우리나라 시스템)가 아니라 지역 및 지방정부에서 고용한 전문 인력이므로 대상자의 상태를 잘 파악하여 처방을 하고 추후 관리가 가능하다는 점이다.

  • The Purpose of this study is to prove empirically the relationship between technology valuation and performance in Ventures, while considering the uniqueness of Korean firms. We use technology score, marketability score, business attractiveness score as ex-ante independent variables, use firm's performance(sales, asset, operating income ratio, net income ratio etc) as ex-post dependent variables. Parametric analysis such as Paired T-test, ANOVA are applied in this paper. The results of Empirical analysis is summarized as follows. Firstly, operating income ratio and net income ratio are different in portfolios classified by technology score. Secondly, the growth rate of operating income is different in portfolios classified by technology score. Finally, this study has shown that technology score has possibility which it use the predictive variables of firm performances.

OSEK/VDX Porting to the Two-Wheel Mobile Robot Based on the Differential Drive Method

  • In this paper, we propose an implementation of a real-time operating system for the two-wheel mobile robot. With this implementation, we have the ability to control the complex embedded systems of the two-wheel mobile robot. The advantage of the real-time operating system is increasing the reliability and stability of the two-wheel mobile robot when they work in critical environments such as military and industrial applications. The real-time operating system which was ported to this implementation is open systems and the corresponding interfaces for automotive electronics (OSEK/VDX). It is known as the set of specifications on automotive operating systems, published by a consortium founded by the automotive industry. The mechanical design and kinematics of the two-wheel mobile robot are described in this paper. The contributions of this paper suggest a method for adapting and porting OSEK/VDX real-time operating system to the two-wheel mobile robot with the differential drive method, and we are also able to apply the real-time operating system to any complex embedded system easily.
