  • There are many factors that affect speech intelligibility and speech acceptability. Structural anomalies and neuromotor pathologies are known for the reasons of abnormal speech sounds. And there are minor variations related to oral mechanism. Speaking with restricted mouth opening related to therapeutic procedure or habitual speech pattern might affect the quality of speech sounds. So this study compared speech intelligibility and speech acceptability of recorded 24 words in two conditions (restricted mouth opening condition and normal mouth opening condition) by 30 normal hearing adults. The results showed that speech intelligibility and speech acceptability were significantly lower in restricted mouth opening condition. And speech acceptability was significantly lower than speech intelligibility in restricted mouth opening condition. Speech acceptability in restricted mouth opening condition was significantly lower especially in open vowel. These findings indicated that the mouth opening condition could affect vowel shape and could be an adverse effect on speech intelligibility and speech acceptability.

  • Many engineers find the way of improving the old building's structural behavior in the remodeling project which is performed using artificial openings for merging two houses. This test was performed to verify the characteristics of coupling beams according to the shape of the openings. One of test specimen has rectangle shape and the other was made by the circle shaped opening and one has coupling member only as slabs. Additionally, three specimens which have openings have 23% ratio in opening area to total wall area. Consequently, solid type which have no opening area shows shear failure. In the case of CW-RBS which have rectangular shaped opening, cracks are developed in coupling beam significantly. And CW-CS which has circular opening failed in shear showing development of diagonal cracks at wall toes and wall mid-height. It is thought that degradation of the wall strength is under the control of the opening shape and coupling beam-wall connection area.

  • A numerical parametric study has been accomplished to figure out the effect of grille shape built in a small passenger car on the aerodynamic performance such as drag and mass flow rate through CRFM(Condenser Radiator Fan Module). Three grille opening parameters and three grille mesh parameters are selected and adopted to a simple shape passenger car model. This research will provide a design guideline for grille opening geometry and mesh shape in the grille. FLUENT, which is very well known commercial code, hires k-${\epsilon}$ turbulence model at the driving speed of 110km/h with moving wall boundary condition. A porous media condition is prepared to estimate the pressure drop amount through CRFM parts.

  • Small water leak experiment was carried out in liquid sodium atmosphere using a specimen of ferrite steel, which will be expected to be a material of the heat transfer tube of liquid metal fast breeder reactor. Self-plugging phenomena of leak path could be explained by the products of reaction and corrosion by sodium-water reaction. Also, re-opening mechanism of self-plugged path could be explained by the thermal transient and vibration of heat transfer tube. As a result, perfect re-opening time of self-plugged leak path was observed to be 129 minutes after water leak initiation. Re-opening shape of a specimen was appeared with double layer of circular type, and re-opening size of this specimen surface was about 2 mm diameter on sodium side.

  • The objective of this research is to study experimentally and numerically the behavior of steel beam columns with openings. Although the presence of openings in the beam columns is inevitable, finding ways to maintain strength is crucial. The studied parameters are opening shape, the ratio between opening height to specimen height, the percentage of opening location from support to beam column length, and web slenderness. Experimental tests are conducted including twelve specimens to study the effect of these parameters and record failure load, load deflection curve, and stress strain curve. Two failure modes are observed: local and flexural buckling. Interaction curves plotted from finite element model analysis are also used to expand the parametric study. Changing the location of the opening can decrease failure load by up to 7% and 60% in both normal and moment ratios respectively. Increasing the opening dimension can lead to a drop in the axial ratio by up to 29% and in the moment ratio by up to 74%. The weakest beam column behavior is noticed in specimens with rectangular openings which results from uneven and concentrated stresses around the opening. The main results of this research illustrate that the best location for opening is at 40% - 50% from beam column support. Also, it is advisable to use circular openings instead of rectangular openings in specimens having slender webs because moment ratios are raised by 85% accompanied by a rise in normal ratios by 9%.

  • Most of mechanical failures are caused by repeated loadings and therefore they are strongly related to fatigue. To avoid the failures caused by fatigue, determination of an optimal shape of a structure is one of the very important factors in the initial design stage. Shape optimization fer two types of specimens, which are very typical ones in opening mode in fracture mechanics, was accomplished by the linear elastic fracture mechanics and the growth-strain method in this study. Also shape optimization for a cantilever beam in mixed mode was carried out by the same techniques. The linear elastic fracture mechanics was used to estimate stress intensity factors and fatigue lives. And the growth-strain method was used to optimize the shape of the initial shape of the specimens. From the results of the shape optimization, it was found that shapes of two types of specimens and a cantilever beam optimized by the growth-strain method prolong their fatigue lives significantly. Therefore, it was verified that the growth-strain method is an appropriate technique for shape optimization of a structure having a crack.

  • The numerical investigations have been carried out on deep beam with opening subjected to static monotonic loading to demonstrate the accuracy and effectiveness of the finite element based numerical models. The simulations were carried out through finite element program ABAQUS/CAE and the results thus obtained were validated with the experiments available in literature. Six simply supported beams were modelled with two square openings of 200 and 250 mm sides considered as opening at centre, top and bottom of the beam. In order to define the material behaviour of concrete and reinforcing steel bar the Concrete Damaged Plasticity model and Johnson-Cook material parameters available in literature were employed. The numerical results were compared with the experiments in terms of ultimate failure load, displacement and von-Mises stresses. In addition to that, seventeen beams were simulated under static loading for studying the effect of opening location, size and shape of the opening and depth, span and shear span to depth ratio of the deep beam. In general, the numerical results accurately predicted the pattern of deformation and displacement and found in good agreement with the experiments. It was concluded that the structural response of deep beam was primarily dependent on the degree of interruption of the natural load path. An increase in opening size from 200 to 250 mm size resulted in an average shear strength reduction of 35%. The deep beams having circular openings undergo lesser deflection and thus they are preferable than square openings. An increase in depth from 500 mm to 550 mm resulted in 78% reduced deflection.

  • The steel tube of Concrete-Filled Tube(CFT) confines the concrete and the concrete restrains the buckling of the tube, The objective of this study is to investigate the influences of the opening shape of the through diaphragm in case of the rectangular CFT column-to-beam connection through the structural experiment. The experiment results are compared with analysis results obtained by using the FEM program. These results are shown that strength of the rectangular CFT column-to-beam connection have similar structural performance regardless of the opening shape if opening areas of the through diaphragm are same. Also in case the connection area/shape of the through diaphragm and the flange of H-beam are similar, it was ascertained that the bending stress occurred at the beam can be transferred to the column through the diaphragm.

  • As the fire inside the building grows rapidly, ejected flame from an opening occurs due to flashover. As a result, the number of cases where the flame spreads to the exterior of the building and rapidly expands to the upper floor is increasing. In particular, in the case of the fire in the Daebong Green Apartment, Uijeongbu in 2015, it was a case where the flame spread to adjacent buildings due to the opening eruption flame from the first ignited building, causing great damage to three apartments. Therefore, this study is to introduce an international standard under development that estimates the shape and properties of the ejected flame from an opening and quantitatively evaluates the radiant heat flux received by the exterior wall of the building by assuming the occurrence of the ejected flame from an opening.
