  • Thermal effects are significant loads for assessing concrete dam behaviour during operation. A new methodology to estimate thermal loads on concrete dams taking into account processes which were previously unconsidered, such as: the evaporative cooling, the night radiating cooling or the shades, has been recently reported. The application of this novel approach in combination with a three-dimensional finite element method to solve the heat diffusion equation led to a precise characterization of the thermal field inside the dam. However, that approach may be computationally expensive. This paper proposes the use of a new one-dimensional model based on an explicit finite difference scheme which is improved by means of the reported methodology for computing the heat fluxes through the dam faces. The improved model has been applied to a case study where observations from 21 concrete thermometers and data of climatic variables were available. The results are compared with those from: (a) the original one-dimensional finite difference model, (b) the Stucky-Derron classical one-dimensional analytical solution, and (c) a three-dimensional finite element method. The results of the improved model match well with the observed temperatures, in addition they are similar to those obtained with (c) except in the vicinity of the abutments, although this later is a considerably more complex methodology. The improved model have a better performance than the models (a) and (b), whose results present larger error and bias when compared with the recorded data.

  • In this article, we describe a simple yet effective method for insertion of observational datasets in a mesoscale atmospheric model used in one-dimensional configuration through Nudging. To demonstrate the effectiveness of this technique, vertical profiles of meteorological parameters obtained from GLASS Sonde launches from a tiny island of Kaashidhoo in the Republic of Maldives are injected in a mesoscale atmospheric model - Advanced Regional Prediction System (ARPS), and model simulated parameters are compared with the available observational datasets. Analysis of one-time nudging in the model simulations over Kaashidhoo show that incorporation of this technique reasonably improves the model simulations within a time domain of +6 to +12 Hrs, while its impact on +18 Hrs simulations and beyond becomes literally null.

  • Impact from water-borne debris during tsunami and flood events pose a potential threat to structures. Debris impact forces specified by current codes and standards are based on rigid body dynamics, leading to forces that are dependent on total debris mass. However, shipping containers and other debris are unlikely to be rigid compared to the walls, columns and other structures that they impact. The application of a simple one-dimensional model to obtain impact force magnitude and duration, based on acoustic wave propagation in a flexible projectile, is explored. The focus herein is on in-air impact. Based on small-scale experiments, the applicability of the model to predict actual impact forces is investigated. The tests show that the force and duration are reasonably well represented by the simple model, but they also show how actual impact differs from the ideal model. A more detailed three-dimensional finite element model is also developed to understand more clearly the physical phenomena involved in the experimental tests. The tests and the FE results reveal important characteristics of actual impact, knowledge of which can be used to guide larger scale experiments and detailed modeling. The one-dimensional model is extended to consider water-driven debris as well. When fluid is used to propel the 1-D model, an estimate of the 'added mass' effect is possible. In this extended model the debris impact force depends on the wave propagation in the two media, and the conditions under which the fluid increases the impact force are discussed.

  • Large container carriers are suffering from lack of knowledge on reliable correlation allowances between model tests and full-scale trials, especially at fully loaded condition, Careful full-scale sea trial with a full loading of containers both in holds and on decks was carried out to clarify it. Model test results were analyzed by different methods but with the same measuring data to figure out appropriated correlations factors for each analysis methods, Even if it is no doubt that model test technique is one of the most reliable tool to predict full scale powering performance, its assumptions and simplifications which have been applied on the course of data manipulation and analysis need a feedback from sea trial data for a fine tuning, so called correlation factor. It can be stated that the best correlation allowances at fully loaded condition for both 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional analysis methods are fecund through the careful sea trial results and relevant study on the large size container carriers.

  • One-dimensional approach to two-dimensional warranty data involves modeling us- age as a function of time. Iskandar (1993) suggests a simple linear model for usage. However, simple linear form of intensity function is of limited value to model the situa-tion where the intensity varies over time. In this study Weibull intensity is considered where the scale parameter is expressed in terms of different models. We will nd out how each parameter in the model a ects the warranty cost and which model gives a bigger number of failures within the two-dimensional warranty region.

  • A numerical method for the mathematical water modeling in 2-dimensional flow has been developed. The model based on a split operator technique, in which, the advection term is calculated using the upwind scheme. The diffusion term is one- dimensionalized and calculated using Crank-Nicholson's implicit finite difference scheme to reduce the numerical errors from large time steps and variable spacings. It also provides a relatively simple and economic method for more accurate simulation of pollutant dispersion. Water depths and flow velocities in the Boreyong reservoir during the normal water periods were predicted by numerical experiments with a 2-dimensional flow model so as to provide current field data for the study of advection and diffusion of pollutants. Developed 2-dimensional water quality model is applied to Boreyong reservoir to simulate a spatial and periodical changes of water quality.

  • A one-dimensional kinematic wave model was used to calculate temporal and spatial changes of the highway runoff. Infiltration into pavement was considered using Darcy's law, as a function of flow depth and pavement hydraulic conductivity ($K_p$). The model equation was calculated using the method of characteristics (MOC), which provided stable solutions for the model equation. 22 storm events monitored in a highway runoff monitoring site in west Los Angeles in the U.S. were used for the model calculation and evaluation. Using three different values of $K_p$ ($5{\times}10^{-6}$, $10^{-5}$, and $2{\times}10^{-5}cm/sec$), total runoff volume and peak flow rate were calculated and then compared with the measured data for each storm event. According to the calculation results, $10^{-5}cm/sec$ was considered a site representative value of $K_p$. The study suggested a one-dimensional method to predict hydrodynamic behavior of highway runoff, which is required for the water quality prediction.

  • One-dimensional numerical model is implemented to investigate temperature variations in the mixed layer depth (MLD) with the passage of typhoons. In the model, we assume a non-divergent, infinite ocean and consider wind effects only, excluding isostatic effects (inverse barometric effects) and upwelling with vertical movement of the water column. Numerical experiments investigate the effects of typhoon tracks on temperature variations, including their dependence on vertical resolutions in the MLD and these results are compared with those in a three-dimensional primitive equation model (POM). The model reproduces features of the observed temperature variations in the MLD fairly well, and implies that wind effects, rather than isostatic effects, play a predominant role in temporal and spatial temperature variations in the MLD. After the passage of typhoons, however, the model does not reproduce well the temperature variations observed in the MLD, because a limitation of the model is its inability to reproduce events such as cyclonic eddy formation (Hong et al., 2011; Masuda and Hong, 2011). The model also shows well the so called 'rightward bias' (Price, 1981) of sea surface cooling which is the most predominant in the right hand side of typhoon's track.
