  • Atomic layer deposition (ALD) is a very promising deposition technique for ZnO thin films. However, there have been very few reports on ZnO grown by ALD. Effects of substrate temperature in both ALD and post annealing on the microstructure and PL properties of ZnO thin films were investigated using X-ray diffraction, photoluminescence, and scanning electron microscopy. The temperature window of ALD is found to be between $130-180^{\circ}C$. The growth rate of ZnO thin film increases as the substrate temperature increases in the temperature range except the temperature window. The crystal quality depends most strongly on the substrate temperature among all the growth parameters of ALD. The crystallinity of the film is improved by increasing the growth thine per ALD cycle or doing post-annealing treatment. The grain size of the film tends to increase and the grain shape tends to change from a worm-like longish shape to a round one as the annealing temperature increases from $600^{\circ}C\;to\;1,000^{\circ}C$.

  • Microphallus species occur primarily as intestinal parasites of birds and mammals, and metacercariae of a new species belonging to this genus have been discovered from the crab, Macrophthalmus dilatatus, in the Republic of Korea. The metacercaria of this fluke was round with 2 thick walls, and the excysted one had mature genital organs. The adult flukes recovered from experimentally infected chicks had numerous intrauterine eggs, well-developed pars prostatica, widely bifurcating ceca, and prominent uterine bulge. After observing internal structures, it was concluded that this species is different from any other known Microphallus spp. Based on the morphology of metacercariae and adult flukes, we describe this specimen as a new species, Microphallus koreana n. sp.

  • The neuronal localization of alpha-amino-3-hydroxyl-5-methyl-4-isoxazole propionic acid (AMPA) glutamate receptor (GluR) subunits is vital as they play key roles in the regulation of calcium permeability. We have examined the distribution of the calcium permeable AMPA glutamate receptor subunit GluR1 in the mouse visual cortex immunocytochemically. We compared this distribution to that of the calcium-binding proteins calbindin D28K, calretinin, and parvalbumin, and of GABA. The highest density of GluR1-immunoreactive (IR) neurons was found in layers II/III. Enucleation appeared to have no effect on the distribution of GluR1-IR neurons. The labeled neurons varied in morphology; the majority were round or oval and no pyramidal cells were labeled by the antibody. Two-color immunofluorescence revealed that 26.27%, 10.65%, and 40.31% of the GluR1-IR cells also contained, respectively, calbindin D28K, calretinin, and parvalbumin. 20.74% of the GluR1-IR neurons also expressed GABA. These results indicate that many neurons that express calcium-permeable GluR1 also express calcium binding proteins. They also demonstrate that one fifth of the GluR1-IR neurons in the mouse visual cortex are GABAergic interneurons.

  • Apple is most favorable fruit in Korea, and apple farmland has been increased before and after the agreements of Uruguay Round and apple is considered as one of strategic agricultural goods. Especially expansion of apple farmland is concentrated in Kyungpook region because of the suitable climate and its market share is about 70 percents in 1992. But in tree age of apple, although newly and replanting area is increasing, the rate of old orchards is higher than that of other regions. In varieties of apple, it is concentrated in Fuji and is forecasted to increase in the future. The amount of apple production of Kyungpook region is 480 thousand tons, that is concentrated in Wui-sung, Young-ju and An-dong. The quantity of apple production per 10a. is 1,315kg, that is low level compared with that of America and Japan, and the gap of technology among farmers is heavily. The difficulties of apple farming in Kyungpook region are summarized as follows. first, the lack of mechanization and facilities due to the small scale of farmland, second, lack of rural labor force, third, concentration on Fuji apple varieties, fourth, low productivity of apple farming.

  • The iron-based Metglas 2605S3A amorphous alloy ribbons are annealed at $435^{\circ}C$ for various periods from 5 to 210 min, and the effect of annealing is investigated on the dc magnetic properties of the ribbon. Typical square-type hysteresis loops are observed for the ribbons annealed fo 5 min, indicative of the nearly complete removal of residual stresses which are produced during melt-quenching. As the annealing time increases, the coercivity increases and the shape of hysteresis loops transforms to round type and finally to sheared one at the longest annealing time of 210 min. These results may be explained by the formation of clusters with chemical shortorder and very fine crystallites (at the annealing time of 210 min), and the diffusion-induced stresses during the formation of the clusters. For the samples annealed for 5 min, very good dc properties of the squareness ratio, coercivity and maximum permeability are observed, but, rather unexpectedly, the initial permeability is found to be very low. These results are considered to be due to a simple domain structure consisting of very small number of $^{\circ}$ domains.

  • An application of thermal response coefficient method for obtaining thermal load on stud-frame walls in a typical house is presented. A set of stud-frame walls is two-dimensional heat conduction transients with composite structure. The ambient temperature on the right-hand face of the stud-frame walls is a typical day-cycle input and the room temperature on the left-hand face is a constant input. The desired output is thermal load at the left-hand face. The time-dependent ambient temperature is approximated by a continuous, piecewise-linear function each having one hour interval. The conduction problem is spatially discretized as 8 computer modelings by finite elements to obtain thermal response coefficients. The discretization and round-off errors can be neglected in the range of adequate number of nodes. A 60-node discretization is recommended as the optimum model among 8 computer modelings. Several sets of response coefficients of the stud-frame walls are generated by which the rate of heat transfer through the walls or some temperature in the walls can be calculated for different input histories.

  • The purpose of this study is to present the objective evaluation semantic scale of avant-garde design. Apparel majors were asked to express associative vocabulary, design development, and final design intentions for the avant-garde, and the final 70 copies were used for analysis. The results found the item style was shown often in the order of dress, coat, and combination of shirt and pants. In order, the silhouettes appeared as atypical, complex, square, and triangular; the decorations appeared as feathers, frills, and round sculptures; and the idea method appeared as extreme, association, and removal method. In examining the relations of associative words and idea designs, the dress had relations with associative words such as 'peculiar,' 'futuristic,' 'fancy,' 'Comme des Garcons,' and 'deconstruction.' As for the relationship between the idea design and the expression image vocabulary, it was found that 'one piece' recalled 'huge,' 'volume,' 'abundant,' 'peculiar,' and 'unknown,' while 'coat' recalled 'huge,' 'big silhouette,' and 'padding.' In conducting the word cloud technique, the overall design showed the central keywords were 'huge,' 'big silhouette,' 'unbalance,' 'feather,' 'structural,' 'unknown,' and 'frill,' in order.

  • Recently, cable conductors composed of numerous coated conductors have been developed to transport huge current for large-scale applications, for example accelerators and fusion reactors. Various cable conductors such as CORC (Conductor on round core), Roebel Cable, and TSTC (Twisted stacked tape cable) have been designed and tested to apply for large-scale applications. But, these cable conductors cannot improve the engineering critical current density (Je) because they are made by simple stacking of coated conductors. In this study, multi-HTS (High temperature superconductor) layers on one substrate (MHOS) wire was fabricated to increase the engineering critical current density by using the exfoliation of superconducting layer from substrate and silver diffusion bonding method. By the repetition of these processes, the 10 m long 6-layer MHOS conductor was successfully fabricated without any intermediate layers like buffer or solder. 6-layer MHOS conductor exhibited a high critical current of 2,460A/12mm-w. and high engineering critical current density of 1,367A/mm2 at liquid nitrogen temperature.

  • The dynamic characterization of a three-story auxiliary building in a nuclear power plant (NPP) constructed with a monolithic reinforced concrete shear wall is investigated in this study. The shear wall is subjected to a joint-research, round-robin analysis organized by the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, South Korea, to predict seismic responses of that auxiliary building in NPP through a shake table test. Five different intensity measures of the base excitation are applied to the shaking table test to get the acceleration responses from the different building locations for one horizontal direction (front-back). Simultaneously to understand the global damage scenario of the structure, a frequency search test is conducted after each excitation. The primary motivation of this study is to develop a nonlinear numerical model considering the multi-layered shell element and compare it with the test result to validate through the modal parameter identification and floor responses. In addition, the acceleration amplification factor is evaluated to judge the dynamic behavior of the shear wall with the existing standard, thus providing theoretical support for engineering practice.
