  • The actual conditions of bedclimate are investigated depending on the regions and housing styles used on ondol in spring. Sixty healthy men and women (30 of them live in apartment and 30 of them live in detached house, 20 of them live in Wonju, 20 of them live in Cheongiu and 20 of them live in Pusan). The results are as follows: 1) The differences of bedclothes thickness between spring and autumn were not significant. weight of sleep-wear in spring was less than those in the autumn. 2) In the spring, the temperature and humidity of bedroom, floor, on/under the mattress, were lower and the temperature inside the sleep-wear was higher than those in the autumn. 3) The differences of the temperature and humidity of bedroom, the bed climate, and the clothing microclimate were significant by the regions and housing styles in spring. The temperature of bedroom and inside sleep-wear, the humidity of bedroom and inside sleep- wear in the apartment were higher than those in the detached house. 4) The differences of comfort sensation on the bedroom conditions was significant by the regions, and the differences of thermal sensation was significant by the housing styles. Most subjects perceived warm and dry but comfortable.

Petrological Properties of Flat Stones from the Obongsan Mountain Quarry Used for Flooring in Ondol

  • The purpose of this study is to scientifically analyze the rocks of the Obongsan Mountain in Boseong, Jeollanam-do, which contains the largest extant quarry of Gudlejang (flat stone for heating) in Korea, and to scientifically determine the petrological characteristics of the area and the reasons for its use as a quarry. The rocks in the quarry are composed of light-green lapilli tuff, containing various types of lithic fragments and crystalline fragments in a vitreous matrix consisting of the fine feldspar crystals. The main constituent minerals were identified as quartz, plagioclase, mica, chlorite and opaque minerals. When the major element compositions were plotted on a Na2O+K2O versus SiO2 diagram, all samples were situated in the same compositional area as rhyolite. In addition, the result of magnetic susceptibility measurement also showed a similar range of values, of 1.30 ~ 4.85 (×10-3 SI), indicating that samples were fractionated from the same magma. Both rock types showed similar apparent specific gravity values of 2.32 ~ 2.60. In particular, plate-shaped joints are well developed in the Obongsan Mountain area, and many areas exhibit talus terrain. In conclusion, the rocks of this area is interpreted to used for a site of Gudlejang quarrying, because the rocks were easily obtainable due to the terrain characteristics, and their petrological properties made them suitable for use as Gudlejang stone.

  • In the late Koryo Dynasty~early Joseon Dynasty, nationwide distribution of Ondol prompted the formation of ㄱ-shaped corner space. From this background, the spatial form changed according to the space function. In the case where the ondol is located in the bent portion, it would have formed a similar spatial form nationwide at the beginning of the 16th century. Until the middle of the 16th century the receptionists and the family rituals were carried out in the inner of the house, so ㄱ-shaped corner space gradually expanded. Also a special structure type using fultile rafters was used to cover the upper structure of the extended folded space. From the 17th century, ㄱ-shaped corner space was varied from wide and high to narrow and low. In addition to this, the space function of ㄱ-shaped corner is a small hall, a wooden floored room, and the kitchen. And Their spatial form also changes over time.

  • By the experiment of a model Ondol heating system gas flow characteristics in a briquette flue tube was investigated. As a heat source electric heater was used, which renders steady flow condition of air. working fluid. It was observed that the flow augumentation may be obtained by increasing the vertial elevation of the flue tube, namely increase in the tube length or increase in the tube inclination, and the gas temperature at the tube entrance Among several factors which augument the flow rate slope of the flue tube has the most striking effect and then the temperature of gas entering the tube. Increase in length of the tube also auguments the flow but the rate of augumentation is so small that it gives little assistance to improvement of the flow The flow in a briguette flue gas does not essentially satisfy the one dimensional steady flow assumption. It is also observed that the flow begins to accompany irregular velocity fluctuation as inclination of the tube increases.

Numerical Analysis on the Flow Distribution in Ondol Flue Channel (산고래 온돌연도내의 유동분포에 관한 수치해석)

  • Two-dimensional jet flows into a couple of confined rectangular enclosures such as an Ondol flue channel and their flow distributions were analyzed by numerical graphics : rectangular space in one enclosure is vacated and the other has 8 rectangular small posts. Both enclosures have a protruded inlet nozzle and on outlet on its center line. Steady state incompressible laminar viscous flow was assumed. The primitive forms of Navier-Stokes equations and continuity equation in a cartesian coordinate system were solved numerically by the Marker and Cell method for Reynolds numbers of 5, 10, 20, 30 and 40. From the numerical graphics it was found that the flow regions in both enclosures were devided into tow parts ; one part was the jet flow localized in a narrow center region of the enclosure and the other part was the very slow recirculating flow occupying the rest of the flow region in the enclosures. However there were a little differences in the shapes of jet flow in both enclosures for Reynolds numbers of 5 and 10 and also in the shapes of recirculating flows in both enclosures for all Reynolds number. Also it was found that waving flow appeared right before the outlet at Reynolds number of 20 and more.

A Study on the Characteristics and Periodical Changes of Meoreum - Focused on Byeoldang (Annexe) and Pavilion Architecture - (머름의 특성과 변천에 관한 연구 - 별당과 정자건축을 중심으로 -)

  • This study primarily aims to illuminate the characteristics of $Meoreum$ in Korean traditional fitting system according to the respective types and its periodical changes. Using the research findings as a chronological indicator by which to estimate the construction date of the building is the secondary purpose. In this study 42 of $Byeoldang$ and pavilion architecture remaining in $Yeongnam$ district were examined through the field surveys and methods of documentary research. The research results are as follows. First, $Meoreum$, which is located below the windows or doors, provides protection against the outer wind and has the function to prevent some warm air of the room from flowing outside. Second, $Meoreum$ was recorded as $Yoeum$(了音), $Woneum$(遠音), and $Maleum$(末音) in $Yeong-geon-ui-gwe$(營建儀軌) of Joseon period. While $Yoeum$(了音) was used in $Yeong-geon-ui-gwe$(營建儀軌) of 1776 and 1856, $Woneum$(遠音) had been also used continuously since the year of 1800. The word, $Maleum$(末音) can be seen in $Lim-won-gyeong-je-ji$(林園經濟志), published in 1827. $Woneum$(遠音) and $Maleum$(末音) seem to be the $Yi-du$(吏讀) types of expression of $Meoreum$ which is being extensively used now. Third, the kinds of $Meoreum$ can be classified as $TohMeoreum$, $TongMeoreum$, $TongpanMeoreum$, and $JjaneunMeoreum$. $TongMeoreum$ and $TohMeoreum$ were mostly used at the front part of $Ondol-rooms$, the backside of main floor called $Daechung$(大廳), and at the space between $Daechung$ and rooms in the Pavilions and $Byeoldangs$(Annexes) that had been built in the early Joseon dynasty. $TohMeoreum$ was usually used at the bottom parts of windows between $Daechung$ and $Ondol-rooms$. $TongpanMeoreum$ was mainly used in the mid-Joseon period and relatively high height was the distinctive feature of $Meoreum$ at that time. $Jjaneun$ $Meoreum$, used mainly in the late Joseon dynasty, has become lower and lower gradually in height since 19th century, so people could enter the room through the windows(fittings). Such changes in $Meoreums$ types has brought about the flow of human traffic directly from $Toenmaru$, narrow wooden porch running along the outside of a room to $Ondol-rooms$.
