  • A new hybrid ON/OFF method is presented for the fast solution of electromagnetic inverse problems in high frequency domains. The proposed method utilizes both topological sensitivity (TS) and material sensitivity (MS) to update material properties in unit design cells. MS provides smooth design space and stable convergence, while TS enables sudden changes of material distribution when MS slows down. This combination of two sensitivities enables a reduction in total computation time. The TS and MS analyses are based on a variational approach and an adjoint variable method (AVM), which permits direct calculation of both sensitivity values from field solutions of the primary and adjoint systems. Investigation of the formulations of TS and MS reveals that they have similar forms, and implementation of the hybrid ON/OFF method that uses both sensitivities can be achieved by one optimization module. The proposed method is applied to dielectric material reconstruction problems, and the results show the feasibility and effectiveness of the method.

  • This study introduces a new topology optimization scheme combing the genetic algorithm (GA) with the on/off sensitivity method for the magnetic actuator core and the armature design. The design process intended to maximize the first eigen-frequency of the armature part and the magnetic actuating force acting on the armature simultaneously. GA based optimal design was carried out to obtain the initial structure and the modified on/off sensitivity method was succeeded to accelerate the design process. Final results show tens of percent improvement in actuating force as well as the first eigen-frequency of the armature.

  • The genetic algorithm (GA) is regarded as one of the best ways for determining a global solution. Because it does not require calculating the design sensitivity differently from the ordinary gradient-based method, it is appropriate for the design problem in the ultra-high frequency range; the ordinary gradient-based method has difficulty in calculating the sensitivity in this range. This paper deals with nano-aperture grating topology optimization based on the GA and the ON/OFF method. The objective of this study is to maximize the transmittance in the measuring area. The simulation and optimization processes are carried out by using the commercial package COMSOL associated with Matlab programming. The final optimal design gives around 21% performance improvement, compared with the initial model.

  • Design sensitivity analysis of a vehicle system is an essential tool for design optimization and trade-off studies. Most optimization algorithms require the derivatives of cost and constraint function with respect to design in order to calculate the next improved design. This paper presents an efficient algorithm application for the design sensitivity analysis, using the direct differentiation method. A mounting area of suspension that welded on chassis frame is analyzed to show the validity and the efficiency of the proposed method. • The mean-line method using empirical models is the most practical method of predicting off-design performance. To gain insight into the empirical models, the influence of empirical models on the performance prediction results is investigated. We found that, in the two-zone model, the secondary flow mass fraction has a considerable effect at high mass flow-rates on the performance prediction curves. In the TEIS model, the first element changes the slope of the performance curves as well as the stable operating range. The second element makes the performance curves move up and down as it increases or decreases. It is also discovered that the slip factor affects pressure ratio, but it has little effect on efficiency. Finally, this study reveals that the skin friction coefficient has significant effect on both the pressure ratio curve and the efficiency curve. These results show the limitations of the present empirical models, and more resonable empirical models are reeded.

  • This paper presents a new approach to large-scale optimal generator maintenance scheduling. To do this, we developed a kind of discrete sensitivity index of each generator by using difference of objective fuction when it is on and off status. Based on the sensitivity value, we applied the conventional priority approach as an optimization method in the order of each generator's sensitivity measure. By applying the developed method, we can efficiently search the state space and dramatically reduce the computation time in a large scale power system.

  • Diagnostics of plasma density is a key factor for monitoring plasma processing. Various probes are invented to measure plasma density and cut-off probe is a one of the most promising diagnostics tool for measuring plasma density. However, at the low density or high pressure the cut-off probe cannot clearly resolve the cut-off peak. Several reasons make this problem: Cut-off likes peaks caused by cavity resonances and weaken transmission spectrum signal at high pressure. Recently, You et al., have researched mechanism of cut-off probe and we improve the cut-off reliability and sensitivity base on that research. Modified cut-off antenna is adapted and bias cut-off probe method is tried. These experiment results have good agreement with the previous study and show good measurement characteristics.

  • An optimal shape design approach is presented for a subsonic S-shaped intake using aerodynamic sensitivity analysis. Two-equation turbulence model is employed to capture strong counter vortices in the S-shaped duct more precisely. Sensitivity analysis is performed for the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations coupled with two-equation turbulence models using a discrete adjoint method For code validation, the result of the flow solver is compared with experiment data and other computational results of bench marking test. To study the influence oj turbulence models and grid refinement on the duct flow analysis, the results from several turbulence models are compared with one another and the minimum number of grid points, which can yield an accurate solution is investigated The adjoint variable code is validated by comparing the complex step derivative results. To realize a sufficient and flexible design space, NURBS equations are introduced as a geometric representation and a new grid modification technique, Least Square NURBS Grid Approximation is applied With the verified flow solver, the sensitivity analysis code and the geometric modification technique, the optimization of S-shaped intake is carried out and the enhancement of overall intake performance is achieved The designed S-shaped duct is tested in several off-design conditions to confirm the robustness of the current design approach. As a result, the capability and the efficiency of the present design tools are successfully demonstrated in three-dimensional highly turbulent internal flow design and off-design conditions.

  • Not only the emission regulation of on-road vehicle engine, but also emission regulation of off-road engine have been reinforced. It is the reason of wide application of emission reduction technology for off-road engines. In this study, optimization of engine parameters (Injector hole number, Injection timing and EGR rate) for reduction of NOx and smoke emissions were conducted by using the analysis of sensitivity and S/N ratio of Taguchi method(DOE). As results, this paper shows optimum value of the parameters for NOx and smoke emission reduction. From the result of reproducibility verification, it is final that the prediction value of NOx and smoke has the error of below 10%. Consequently, the method and results of this study will be used for quantitative reference to EGR control mapping in next study.

  • A genetic algorithm (GA) is an optimization technique based on natural evolution theory to find the global optimal solution. Unlike the gradient-based method, it can design nanoscale structures in the electric field because it does not require sensitivity calculation. This research intends to design a nanoaperture with an unprecedented shape by the topology optimization scheme based on the GA and ON/OFF method in the visible frequency range. This research mainly aims to maximize the transmission rate at a measuring area located 10nm under the exit plane and to minimize the electric distribution at other locations. The finite element analysis (FEA) and optimization process are performed by using the commercial package COMSOL combined with the Matlab programming. The final results of the optimized model are analyzed by a comparison of the electric field intensity and the spot size of near field with those of the initial model.
