With the unparalleled rate of aging and rapid modernization, Korean society faces the situation in which it has to increase the supply of elderly care services dramatically in the near future. Among these services, nursing homes are considered as an essential alternative provision because Korea can no longer rely on traditional familism nor medical facilities for the care of her older population. It is necessary, therefore, to prepare a future plan for the delivery of nursing homes in Korea. This paper has identified elderly care context and analyzed elderly care facilities of Korea in the point of supply and utilization rate of nursing homes according to the region and type of facilities. On the bases of this analysis, the delivery planning of nursing homes in Korea has been proposed in order to increase welfare status of older people and efficient utilization of health care resources.
This study was done to investigate the ADL differences between before and after home care. For this survey, the Barthel index, an ADU(activities of daily living) assessment, and general history questions were asked. Functional performance, i.e. ADL, was studied in a population a total of 56 men and women aged 65 and older from the city of Taejon. Among the independent subjects, women, 73 years of age and older, married status, 1-2 times taking home care per month, the case answering 'Quite' about satisfactory of home care, elderly dwelling with others and who have helper and spouse, elderly having a snack regularly, are statistically significant. Also ADL differences were found in grooming, getting in and out chair, getting on and off toilet, walking 500 meters on the level. Further studies should evaluate the activities of daily living to predict important disability-related outcomes.
The purposes of the study were to investingate selected living conditions of the elderly I Inchon and to examine if they can be disaggregated according to their socio-demographic characteristics in terms of living conditions. Four living areas were examined in the study : health and food habit, housing, economic status, and family relationships. Data were collected by questionaires. The sample consisted of 202 elderly. It was found in general that the living conditions were relatively poor for the elderly who were female, older and less educated, and had higher household income and no spouse.
Health capacity to work for the elderly is an essential piece of information for designing social policies in an aging society. Here, we assess the health capacity to work of older men in South Korea and provide a cross-country comparison. Following the methodology proposed by Milligan and Wise (2012), which uses the cohort mortality rate as a proxy for overall health status, we quantify the additional employment capacity of current older men in reference to the mortality-employment relationship of a generation ago. Despite the high employment rate of older men in South Korea, we find substantial additional employment capacity among older men (those aged 55 or more) as of 2016 comparable in size to those found in other advanced countries. We also find evidence that older men are not merely capable of working but are also willing to work, and many of them are increasingly combining pension income and work. These findings suggest that labor supply disincentives for older men embedded in public pension systems in South Korea need to be thoroughly reexamined and adjusted accordingly lest they should inhibit the labor supply of older workers.

The purpose of this study was to survey the needs of elderly housing of the elderly who lives in Seoul in order to offer the information helpful to elderly housing designers and elderly policy makers. Documentary research and interview survey methods were used in this research. The sample was taken from 30 the elderly living in Seoul. Data were analyzed with the SPSS PC+ window version. The results were as follows: 1) there is little difference between age groups. The older groups had traditional sense of value that count on their children to serve. 2) the demands for elderly housing are not so much but those who have want to live in elderly housing want to live with their family and relatives in the suburbs of Seoul.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the elderly 's motivation for participation in lifelong education on career barriers and to analyze empirically the effect of income adjustment on this effect. For this purpose, 187 elderly people aged 65 or older participating in lifelong education programs in D city were studied. The correlation of major variables was confirmed and multiple regression analysis was conducted to analyze the moderating effect. To that end, the city conducted a study on 187 senior citizens aged 65 or older who were participating in a lifelong education program. The correlation of the main variables was checked and the middle and multiple return analysis was performed to analyze the adjustment effects. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the elderly 's motivation to participate in lifelong education on career barriers and empirically analyze the effect of income adjustment on this effect. For this purpose, 187 elderly people aged 65 or older participating in lifelong education programs in D city were studied. The results of the analysis are as follows. First, it was confirmed that elderly 's motivation to participate in lifelong education had negative effects on career barriers. The elderly who participated or participated in lifelong education developed their abilities and recognized that their career barriers were reduced by their recognition. Second, income of the elderly was negatively influenced on career barriers. The higher the income, the more the negative relation of the career barrier is strengthened. Third, income has a moderating effect on the relationship between elderly motivation to participate in lifelong education and career barriers. Based on the results of this study, the discussion and implications are presented.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of participation in adult education on cognitive function, and the mediating effects of relationships with children among older adults. This study employed data from the 2011 Elderly Survey, and a total of 8,668 older adults over 65-years old were used for analysis. Multiple linear regression analyses were used to examine the mediating effect of relationship with children based on the approach proposed by Baron & Kenny (1986). The results showed that participation in adult education increased cognitive function of older adults. Adult education participation also increased satisfaction with relationship with children, and relationship with children was found to have a mediating effect. These findings suggest that there is a need to recognize the importance of the relationship between older adults and children when developing education programs for older adults.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to examine the level of community environmental perception of older adults and to identify the association between environmental perception and subjective health status among older persons. Methods: Analyses are based on data from Statistics Korea 2016 Social Survey. This study analyzed a total of 8,193 older adults aged 65 and over, and examined the association between environmental perception on air, water, soil, noise and vibration, and subjective health status using multiple regression analysis. Results: Study findings shown that environmental perception on water and soil had significant association with subjective health status of older adults. Specifically, older adults reported worse health status when they had more negative perceptions of water and soil environments in their communities. Conclusions: Results of this study suggested that efforts to enhance safety of drinking water and soil environments, and continuous research to identify relationship between environment and elderly health shoud be needed.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of job characteristics on smoking, and the mediating effects of job stress between job characteristics and smoking among elderly workers. Methods: This study employed data from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing, and a total of 778 older workers were used for analysis. Current smoking status, job stress, job characteristics including physical job demands, job demands related to contents, working days, regularity of working hour, satisfaction with income, and sociodemographic factors were analyzed. Descriptive analysis, t-tests, chi-square test, multiple linear regression, and logistic regression were used for analysis. Results: Results showed that physical job demands and regularity of working hours were significant predictors of smoking of elderly workers. The higher level of physical job demands and regular working-hour increased the risk of smoking. Also, physical job demands, job demands related job contents, and income satisfaction directly impacted on job stress. However, job stress did not mediate the relationship between job characteristics and smoking. Conclusions: The findings suggest that smoking interventions for older workers should take into account job characteristics. Implications for practice and future study directions are discussed.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the association between unmet healthcare needs due to financial reasons and catastrophic health expenditures. Methods: This study used secondary data from the 2014~2015 Korean Health Panel survey. The subjects of this study were 21,495 people aged 20 or older, and of them, there were 16,227 people aged 20 to 64 and 5,268 people aged 65 or older, which were surveyed between 2014 and 2015. The association between unmet healthcare needs due to financial reasons and catastrophic health expenditures was analyzed through logistic regression. Results: In 2015, 1.7% of people aged 20~64 years and 7.9% of those aged 65 or older experienced unmet healthcare needs due to financial reasons. In the 20~64 age group, people who repeatedly experienced catastrophic health expenditures (=10%,=20%) were less likely to experience unmet healthcare needs due to financial reasons than those who did not experience catastrophic health expenditures for two years (OR=0.50, OR=0.41). However, in the 65-or-older group, people who repeatedly experienced catastrophic health expenditures (=20%) were more likely to experience unmet healthcare needs due to financial reasons than those who did not experience catastrophic health expenditures for two years (OR=1.68). Conclusion: A greater percentage of the elderly repeatedly faced both catastrophic health expenditures and unmet healthcare needs due to financial reasons compared to the non-elderly.
