  • This study attempts to examine the factors influencing the Caregiving responsibility of sibling without disability on their adult siblings with intellectual disability. For this purpose, a questionnaire survey was conducted on siblings without disability who have adult siblings with intellectual disability aged 18 years old or more and also who use services provided by 8 welfare centers for persons with disabilities in Seoul. With 132 valid responses, multiple regression technique was adopted in exploring a model for characteristics of adult with intellectual disability, a model for characteristics of siblings without disability, a model for relationship factors, and a comprehensive model. The findings of the study showed that the degree of disability in the model for characteristics of adult siblings with intellectual disability and the intimacy of siblings and social support in the model of relationship factors were significant. The result of the comprehensive model revealed that the degree of disability, the gender of the siblings without disability, the intimacy of siblings, and social support were significant. Especially, the relationship factors including the intimacy of siblings and social support were found to be the most significant factors in order to explain the caregiving responsibility. The findings of the study suggest that sibling program needs to be developed and disseminated in order to increase the understanding and the trust between adult with intellectual disability and sibling without disability, that a help is critical for adult with intellectual disability to extend the social network in which sibling without disability receives support from sibling without disability, family, friends, and other acquaintances around, and that different approach is needed in order to reduce caregiveing difficulties depending on the dependence of disability.

  • Bones are important parts in sustaining the shape of the body, but they are also metabolic organs which undergo bone remodeling by constant bone resorption and formation. Osteoporosis, the typical metabolic bone disease, is characterized by a reduction in bone mineral density (BMD). Women more than men are at risk fir osteoporosis-related fractures, especially in the lumbar spine, wrist, and hip region. Risk of fracture depends on one's BMD, which open determined by the peak bone mass value achieved at skeletal maturity and followed by subsequent age-and menopause-related bone loss. Genetic and environmental factors are known to play a key role in bone metabolism and diet is considered as one of the important environmental factors. The purpose of the present study was to assess the status of BMD and bone mineral content(BMC) to clarify the relationships between dietary intakes and the risk of osteoporosis in adult women in Taegu. Subjects were 130 healthy females in between 20 and 69 years of age. BMD and BMC of the lumbar spine(venebrae L2-4) of the subjects were measured by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. The average age of the subjects was 47.4${\pm}$11.7 years old, the average weight was 57.2${\pm}$8.4kg, the average age of menarche was 16.6${\pm}$1.9 years old and the average age of menopause was 48.4${\pm}$5.3 years old. The nutrient intakes of the subjects measured by the convenient method were generally lower than the level of RDA. The result of nutrient intake assessed has shown that the average energy intake was 1701${\pm}$316kca1 which is 85.1% of the RDA and the average calcium intake was 485.4${\pm}$172.3mg which is 69.3% of the RDA. The intakes of protein, vitamin A, vitamin B$_1$, niacin were greater than the RDA, whereas the remaining nutrient intakes were lower than the RDA. The average BMD of the subjects was shown to be 1.06${\pm}$1.09g/$\textrm{cm}^2$. The highest BMD of 1.24${\pm}$0.14g/$\textrm{cm}^2$ was noticed in the subjects of 30s compared to 20s, 40s, 50s, 60s. The BMD values were compared by the relative body weight(R3W) of the menopause subjects, and it was found that the underweight group had significant lower BMB while the rest of the groups did not have any differences in BMD. The most strongly correlated nutrient with BMD among the menopause subjects appeared to be calcium. The women whose Ca intakes were higher than 500mg showed the significantly higher BMD than those with Ca intakes lower than 500mg. This study suggests that the most effective way to prevent osteoporosis and to reduce the incidences of fractures seems to be minimizing bone loss through the adequate intake of calcium as well as avoiding underweight, especially in menopausal women. • The principal feature of bioprosthetic valve which remains to be completely defined is long-term durability, especially, with regard to the impact of patient age. This report provides extended data regarding valve durability derived from a data base of 515 patients who received lonescu-Shiley bioprosthetic valve between 1978 and 1985; cumulative duration of follow-up was 1562.3 patient-years, with a maximum follow-up duration of 8.7 years. The results of this survey showed as follows: 1] The actuarial freedom from valve failure at 6 years were 43*7% for 0-19 year-old group, 70*1% for 20-39 year-old group and 75*1% for over 40 year-old group separately. 2] Of the causes of valve failure, only the primary tissue failure was markedly influenced by patient`s age [p<0.001], but the prosthetic valve endocarditis was not [p>0.1]. 3] The linealized incidences of primary tissue failure were 7.31% per patient-year in 0-19 year-old group and 0.12% in 20-39 year-old group. 4] The primary tissue failure rate in 0-19 year-old group was 6.36% during first 4 years, but then increased upto 10.95% at postoperative 5 year. Thus we find that in bioprosthetic valve the primary tissue failure is apt to occur when patient is young [especially less than 20 years old] and the postreplacement time passes [especially over 5 years]. The rate of bioprosthesis failure among children and adolescents is clearly higher than that observed in adult patients; however, conclusive quantification of time-related risk for young patient is not yet possible on the basis of existing data. Therefore, the advisability of bioprosthesis implantation in children remains to be determined.

  • In order to observe the infectivity, growth and development and adult morphology of Metorchis orientalis, a total of 40 chicks were experimentally infected with 100 metacercariae respectively, collected from Pseuderasbora larva. The worms of various developmental stages were recovered from chicks at 1.5, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 1:k and 21 days after infection, and they were prepared for morphological observations and measurements. All of the worms were found in the gallbladders of chicks, and their recovery rate was 32% in average. The growth of the body was rapid from 9 to 11 days after infection. The genital primordia appeared in 1.5 and 3-day old worms, and ovary and testes were first observed in 5-day old worms. Thereafter, genital organs gradually matured and completed up to 11 days after infection. The adult worm was leaf-like, and possessed a con- voluted tubular seminal vesicle, an ovoid ovary, a sac-like seminal receptacle, 2 lobed-testes and follicular vitellaria. Eggs were $31.9{\times}15.3{\;}\mu\textrm{m}$ in average size, ellipsoid to elliptical in shape and possessed abopercular thickenings. From the above results, it is concluded that M. orientalis grows in sigmoid pattern in chicks, and their genital organs fully matul.e between days 9 and 11. It is also confirmed that a chick is a new definitive host of M. orientalis.

  • Six rice cultivars showing various types of resistance or susceptibility to Pyricularia oryzae in the field were used to study the relationship between susceptibility and contents of carbohydrates, amino acids and phenolics at different plant maturities and leaf ages under controlled environmental conditions. No consistent differences between the susceptible cultivars and adult-plant-resistant cultivars were found in terms of the contents of individual carbohydrates, total amino acids and phenolics in rice leaves throughout the plant development. Only the adult-plant-resistant cultivar Dobong had lower contents of inositol throughout the plant development than the other cultivars. The amounts of sucrose, inositol, glucose, and fructose increased in all tested cultivars at eight leaf stage than those at five leaf stage, but slightly decreased at twelve leaf stage. In contrast, total amino acids and phenolics gradually decreased during plant development. With increasing age of rice leaves, the amounts of total soluble amino acids and phenolics gradually increased in healthy fifth leaf tissues, although there were no significant differences between the cultivars. In particular, a high level of phenolics existed in old fifth leaves of the cultivar Dobong. These results suggest that increased resistance to blast of matured rice plants and old leaves may be the two different phenomina derived from the physiological changes occurring during plant development and leaf senescence, probably functioning differently in P. oryzae development.

  • The purposes of this study were to survey the seroprevalence of canine coronavirus(CCV) in healthy adult dogs and to determine whether there was any relationship between seroprevalence and the host parameters. Serum samples for determination of serum neutralization antibody titers against CCV were obtained from 812 healthy adult dogs over 1 year old brought to veterinary clinics for routine health care visit in 4 provinces from January 2003 to April 2004. Of the 812 dogs, 714(87.9%) had positive antibody titers(more than 1:4) against CCV. The prevalence of positive CCV antibody titers were not significantly associated with age, sex, rearing province and environment, and vaccination status. However, the positive CCV antibody titers were increasing with the age. These serological findings have shown that prevalence of positive CCV antibody titers in Korean dogs were a relatively high and that CCV infection was widespread in Korean dog population. These suggest that it may be as important to protect dogs against infection with CCV as it is to vaccinate against canine parvovirus.

  • A 5-year-old, intact male Beagle was presented with chronic abdominal pain. The dog was diagnosed with dirofilariasis by positive heartworm antigen detection via ELISA and concurrent microfilaria. Thoracic radiographs revealed cardiomegaly with dilation of the main pulmonary artery. Echocardiography revealed the adult worms in the main pulmonary arteries, but other abnormalities other than heartworm infection were not present. To find the cause of the abdominal pain, exploratory laparoscopy was performed. Ectopic migrating adult heart worms were visualized through exploratory laparoscopy and the clinical sign resolved after removing the heart worm. This report describes removing the ectopic migrating adult heartworms using exploratory laparoscopy in the abdominal cavity.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the actual status regarding the size selection for jackets, skirts, and slacks among the ready-to-wears worn by adult women, and to examine the physical measurements of major parts for the women wearing each dress size. The data collection was made through the questionnaires obtained from 699 adult women of 20 to 59 years of age. The questionnaire is composed of the sizes of ready-to-wears worn and physical measurements of the respondents. The data analysis was conducted through description statistics, Crosstabs, ANOVA. The findings are as follows. 1. The differences were found in the sizes of ready-to-wears worn by adult women along the age ranges. 2. The ratios of correspondence for the sizes of jackets and skirts and for the sizes of jackets and slacks were as high as 77.3% and 78.3%, respectively. 3. The differences were found in every physical measurement item of the jacket wearers by the size. The girth items showed an increase with the larger sizes of jackets, whereas the height was the largest for the wearers of Sizes 55 and 66, regardless of the jacket sizes. The differences in the physical measurements by the age range, among the jacket wearers of the same size, were found in the height and the waist girth. The height was lower and the waist girth was larger, with the older age. In addition, the differences in the wearers' physical measurements, by the jacket size of the same age range, were found in every item including the height among those in their 20's, and in every item excluding the height among those in their 30's or the above.

  • We report here an ectopic case of Fasciola hepatica infection confirmed by recovery of an adult worm in the mesocolon. A 56-year-old female was admitted to our hospital with discomfort and pain in the left lower quadrant of the abdomen. Abdominal CT showed 3 abscesses in the left upper quadrant, mesentery, and pelvic cavity. On surgical exploration, abscess pockets were found in the mesocolon of the sigmoid colon and transverse colon. A leaf-like worm found in the abscess pocket of the mesocolon of the left colon was diagnosed as an adult fluke of F. hepatica. Histologically, numerous eggs of F. hepatica were noted with acute and chronic granulomatous inflammations in the subserosa and pericolic adipose tissues. Conclusively, a rare case of ectopic fascioliasis has been confirmed in this study by the adult worm recovery of F. hepatica in the mesocolon.
