  • A two-year-old male peacock (Pavo cristatus) showed acute watery green diarrhea, followed by neurological signs including torticollis and muscular tremor. By the hemagglutination inhibition test for detecting the antibody against the Newcastle disease virus (NDV), the peacock serum inhibited the agglutination of chicken red blood cells. Grossly distinctive hemorrhagic lesions were found in the mucosa of proventiculus and intestine and lung. The spleen revealed multiple variable sized necrotic foci. Histologically, the mucosa of gastrointestinal track had hemorrhagic lesions and some of them underwent ulceration. The spleen exhibited multiple variable sized necrotic foci in which fibrin exudation was marked. Central nervous system had mild non-suppulative menin-goencephalitis consisting of vasculitis, perivascular hemorrhage, gliosis and meningitis. The cells particularly in the cerebellum were degenerative to necrotic. Some of these nerve cells revealed characteristic peripheral chromatolysis. From the present serological and pathological findings, it is suggested that NDV causing death of peacock was velogenic viscerotropic strain. This is the first report of the occurrence of velogenic viscerotropic NDV in an adult peacock in Korea.

  • Congenital esophago-bronchial fistula without atresia is very rare and usually demonstrate more insidious clinical effects, and patients may reach adult life before the diagnosis. We had been experienced a typical case of esophago-bronchial fistula without atresia and document the case. A 42-year-old women was admitted to our hospital due to frequent choking symptom and attacks of pneumonia, and patient status was in chronic pulmonary infection status such as most probably bronchiectatic state of right middle & lower lobe including significant destructive changes. We had confirmed esophago-bronchial fistula without atresia with esophagoscopy, esophagogram, and chest CT, and performed esophago-bronchial fistulectomy and right middle & lower lobectomy. Its belongs to type II of Braimbridge`s classification for congenital esophago-bronchial fistula. Postoperation course was smooth and uneventful.

  • Sildenafil citrate ($Viagra^{(R)}$ Pfeizer US Pharmaceutical Group, New York, NY, USA) is a potent vasodilating agent to treat male erectile dysfunction. Among its adverse effects, hemorrhagic stroke has not been widely reported yet. We present a case of a 33-year-old healthy man who ingested 50 mg sildenafil a half hour before onset of headache, nervousness and speech disturbance. Head computed tomogram of this stuporous man showed huge intracerebral hemorrhage and thick subarachnoid hemorrhage, but angiography failed to disclose any vascular anomalies. Subsequent surgical procedure was followed, and rehabilitation was provided thereafter. Sildenafil seems to act by redistributing arterial blood flow, and concurrent sympathetic hyperactivity, which lead to such hemorrhagic presentation. Extreme caution should be paid on even in a young adult male patient wven without known risk factors.

  • This study used reversed sex-typed programs as an educational tool to teach preschool children about varieties of sex roles. The subjects were 85 four- and five-year-old kindergarten children, half of whom were assigned to the experimental group and half to the control group. The children's sex role stereotypes decreased after participation in reversed sex-typed programs. Girls' scores of sex role stereotypes were higher in terms of own sex and in child and adult activity but lower in terms of the opposite sex than those of boys. There were differences in the scores of sex-role stereotypes in terms of child activity and adult activity.

  • A congenital cystic adenoid malformation of the lung(CCAM) is characterized by an anomalous fetal development of the terminal respiratory structures, resulting in the adenomatoid proliferation of the bronchiolar elements and cystic formation. CCAM has been detected on the fetus, premature babies and stillborn as well as infants and children. An adult presentation of CCAM is extremely rare. When cystic lesions occur with a repeated infection, an evaluation of the cystic lesions requires a differential diagnosis of CCAM, sequestration, a lung abscess, a pneumatocele and a bronchogenic cyst. The definite treatment of CCAM is the surgical removal of the involved lobe. We report a case of a CCAM in a 24-year-old female with a brief review of the relevant literature.

  • Purpose: This study was to explore and describe the reported experiences of elderly spouses who care their bedridden spouse in the home. Methods: The participants of this study were 14 male and female elderly spouses who live in B metropolitan city and have provided care for more than six months. Data were collected from July 3 to November 6, 2014. Data analysis was done simultaneously with data collection, using the analytical methods of Strauss and Corbin for Grounded theory. Results: The core category was identified as 'going together bearing a heavy burden of care in old age.' In this study, the caring process of elderly spouses can be explained in terms of three stages such as 'a period of trial and error,' 'a period of mastering a role,' and 'a period of role transcendence'. Conclusion: The results of this study can provide an intervention framework to reduce the heavy burden of caring for an elderly spouse.

  • Changes in activity and classification of esterase isozymes during the tire cycle or Plodia inteipunctella (Hiibner) were investigated by the native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The stage specificity in esterase activity and isozyme pattern was observed throughout the larvalpupal-adult transformation. The activity esterase was highest at the 3-day old adult stage, and the lowest level at the prepupal stage. A total of 12 esterase bands were identified throughout the development, and the bands showing high enzyme activity was observed in the middle part of gel. Twelve esterases on the basis of inhibition by the three types of inhibitors (organophosphates, eserine sulfate and sulfhydryl reagents) were classified into three class, namely, carboxylesterase (CE), arylesterase (ArE) and cholinesterase (ChE), and these classes contained 7, 3 and 2 isozymes, respectively.

  • Sixty eight wild rats, Rattus norvegicus, were caught from Seoul city, Kyonggi, Kangwon, Cholla, and Kyongsang-provinces. All sera collected from rats were examined by immunofluorescent test to find antibody against murine typhus. The antibody prevalance to murine typhus was 4.4%(3/68). Sero-positive rate was 12.5%(2/16) in Kyonggi province and 12.5%(1/8) in Cholla province. The sero-positive rate difference between sexes of rats was not recognized. Three Rattus norvegicus having antibody to murine typhus were morphologically classified as subadult with 8.3%(1/12), middle-aged adult with 5.9%(1/17), and old adult with 4.8%(1/21), respectively.

  • Enterovirus commonly causes neurologic diseases (aseptic meningitis, encephalitis, etc.), hand-foot-mouth disease, herpangina, and acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis. However, it rarely causes pneumonia in immunocompetent adults. In Korea, no case has been reported about pneumonia caused by enterovirus in healthy adults. We can cite the case of a 20-year-old woman who presented severe community-acquired pneumonia caused by enterovirus. The diagnosis was based on reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) of a respiratory specimen.

  • Purpose: This study is aimed to search the lived experiences of the participants and to analyze the contents so that we can be assured about what the elderly wish and find the appropriate nursing intervention for them in real life. Method: This is based on a phenomenological approach. Participants of this study consist of people older than 65 years old. Data was collected from May to August in 2001. Data collection was done through in-depth interviews and observations. The time used in each interview was from 50 minutes to 2 hours. Each participant was interviewed three to five times. Giorgi's phenomenological analysis was used in data analysis. Result: The elder's wishes are 1) a respected life, 2) a happy life, 3) a peaceful life, 4) a independent life, 5) a financially independent life, 6) a satisfactory life, 7) a mind to depend on someone, 8) a serving life, 9) a historic family, 10) a happy-ending life. Conclusion: The study will contribute for the nursing intervention to enhance the quality of life and successful aging of the elderly.
