  • This paper presents new criteria for DGA(Dissolved Gases Analysis) using CDF(Cumulative Distribution Function) obtained from the data from the diagnosis of transformers operated in KEPCO over a period of 16 years. Because of differences in operating environments, construction type, oil volume, and other factors, the interpretative criteria of DGA at KEPCO differs from other standards such as IEC-60599, or Rogers and Doernenburg. To suggest the most appropriate criteria, the DGA data from transformers under normal conditions as well as from developing fault transformers were collected. Using these data, this study suggests the limitative gas level of transformers under normal operating conditions and verifies the suitability of the criteria. Because the application of this new criterion to transformers at KEPCO increases the detectable ratio of incipient faults and reduces unnecessary follow-up sampling and analysis, the new criteria yields a more reliable prediction of transformer condition.

  • It was known that oil-filled transformer's life depended on insulating paper which was applied to transformers for insulating of transformer. Therefore when paper was aged, its electrical, mechanical and chemical characteristics were changed. Especially if operating temperature was high, paper was quickly damaged. As cellulose paper which was mainly used for solid insulation of transformers was degraded, the cellulose polymer chains broke down into shorter lengths and gases such as CO, $CO_2$, $CH_4$, $C_2H_4$ and so on were produced from paper. Also by-product known as furan compounds were producted from paper and it were dissolved within insulating oil. In this paper accelerating aging cell was aged during 60 hours at 100, 150, 180 and $200^{\circ}C$, respectively, so evaluating the chemical characteristics of cellulose paper by thermal. An it were performed analysis such as tensile strength(TS), dissolved gas analysis(DGA) and high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC). Also for analyzing of correlation between insulating degradation characteristics, it was performed linear regression method as statistical treatment.

  • Oil-impregnated paper is a major type of insulation used in oil-filled converter transformers for both traditional and new energy systems. This paper presents and analyzes the results of the experiment conducted on the electrical aging of oil-impregnated paper under AC-DC combined voltages using the pulsed electro-acoustic (PEA) technique. The formation and dynamics of space charge affected the performance of insulation material. The electrical aged oil-paper insulation was obtained through electrical aged experiments under the voltages. Based on the PEA technique, measurements were carried out when the oil-paper insulation system was subjected to different stressing and aging times. The space charge dynamics in the bulk of the oil-paper insulation system with different aging times were measured and analyzed. Characteristic parameters such as the total charge injection amount, the total charges of fast moving and slow moving, and the distortion factor of electric field were calculated and discussed. Results show that the longer electrical aging time, the more charges trapped in the bulk of aging sample. It leads to larger distortion factor of electric field in the bulk of aging samples and accelerate degradation of oil-paper insulation under AC-DC combined voltages.

  • Most of the present potential transformers of train vehicles are of the oil-type filled with insulating oil and are susceptible to problems such as explosion due to the increase in the internal pressure during train operation and poor reliability near the end of their life cycle. As a solution to this problem, it is necessary to develop a molded dry-type potential transformer with excellent pressure-resistance performance using insulating resin. In order to localize the product, the Korea Railroad Research Institute has been developing a molded dry-type potential transformer. As part of this research, it is necessary to analyze the vibration characteristics of the developed product and to check the transformer performance in a vibration environment. In this study, a resonance test and simulated long-term life test of the developed product were conducted according to the KS R 9144 and IEC 61373 standards, respectively, which are vibration test methods for railway vehicle parts. Their natural frequencies were analyzed by comparing the results of the numerical modal analysis and resonance test, in order to confirm their adherence to the standards. Also, the performance test after the simulated long-term life test confirmed that the operation of the developed transformer was not problematic even in a long-time vibration environment.

  • It has been appeared and widely used today SF6 Gas Insulated Substation(Hereafter called GIS) for the power supply to the densely populated area due to the superior insulation withstand ability of SF6 Gas. And to maximize the compact effect of this substation, it is normal practice to connect underground cables. If it is possible to elieminate the redundant lightning arresters using the physical characterestics of travelling waves in underground cables, economical advantages can be obtained together with easy maintenances. It is presented in this paper the possiblity of eliminating the transformer protection lightning arresters under some conditions for the 154kV GIS's (BIL:750kV) which Korea Electric Co. plans to construct using the general purpose digital computer program.

  • When paper which was applied as insulation in oil-filled transformer was aged by thermal, its electrical, mechanical and chemical characteristics were changed and deteriorated. Therefore operating temperature was more higher, damage of paper was more quicker. Insulating paper which was generally made with cellulose was degraded, polymer of long length chain was decomposed as a monomer and CO, $CO_2$ gas and/or by-product such as furfural was produced from paper at the same time. In according with detection these gas and furfural by dissolved gas analysis(DGA) and high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC), we have investigated effects of CO, $CO_2$ gas and furfural on insulation of paper. Also we have analyzed for correlation between furfural and CO, $CO_2$ gas using linear regression method that was known as useful, credible statistical analysis.

  • The transformer is a static electrical device that transfers energy by inductive coupling. Then, heat is occurred at coils, inner transformer was filled with insulating oils for cooling and insulation. Although mineral oil as insulating oil has been widely used, it does not meet health and current environmental laws because it is not biodegradable. Therefore, in this study, the diglycerol ester was synthesized with diglycerol and fatty acids (oleic acid and caprylic acid) over various catalysts for insulating oil having biodegradability, high flash points and low pour points. The sulfated zirconia ($SO_4{^{2-}}/ZrO_2$) catalyst prepared at different calcination temperature shows the highest conversion of fatty acids at $600^{\circ}C$ due to crystallinity and high density of acid sites per surface area. When the molar ratio of oleic acid and caprylic acid is 1:3, the diglycerol ester shows superior insulation properties that are the flash point of $306^{\circ}C$ and pour point of $-50^{\circ}C$. The insulation properties of synthesized diglycerol ester shows the pour point of $-50^{\circ}C$ and the flash point of over $300^{\circ}C$. Therefore, diglycerol ester is superior to the vegetable oils in insulation properties.

  • Current oil-type potential transformers for trains are filled with insulating oil, which could have problems like explosions due to rising inner pressure during train operation. Therefore, mold and dry-type potential transformers are being developed to prevent explosions. One problem in manufacturing mold-type transformers is preventing void formation around the coiled core inside the mold during epoxy filling, which could cause an electrical spark. Micro voids can remain in the resin after filling, and macro voids can occur due to the structure shape. A transformer that is being developed has a cavity at the junction of the core and the coil for better performance, and when highly viscous epoxy flows inside the cavity channel, macro voids can form inside it. Therefore, in this study, the free-surface flow of the mold filling procedure was analyzed numerically by applying the VOF method. The results were used to understand the phenomena of void formation inside the cavity and to modify the process conditions to reduce voids.
