Assessing the Performance of Pongamia pinnata (l.) Pierre under Ex-situ Condition in Karnataka

  • Pongamia (Pongamia pinnata L.) as a source of non-edible oil, is potential tree species for biodiesel production. For several reasons, both technical and economical, the potential of P. pinnata is far from being realized. The exploitation of genetic diversity for crop improvement has been the major driving force for the exploration and ex situ/in situ conservation of plant genetic resources. However, P. pinnata improvement for high oil and seed production is not achieved because of unsystematic way of tree improvement. Performance of P. pinnata planted by Karnataka Forest Department was assessed based on yield potential by collecting 157 clones out of 264 clones established by Karnataka Forest Department research wing under different research circles/ranges. It was evident that the all the seed and pod traits were significantly different. Further, selection of superior germplasm based on oil and pod/seed parameters was achieved by application of Mahalanobis statistics and Tocher's technique. On the basis of D2 values for all possible 253 pairs of populations the 157 genotypes were grouped into 28 clusters. The clustering pattern showed that geographical diversity is not necessarily related to genetic diversity. Cluster means indicated a wide range of variation for all the pod and seed traits. The best cluster having total oil content of more than 34.9% with 100 seed weight of above 125 g viz. Cluster I, II, III, IX, XV, XIX, XXI, XXIII, XXVI and XXVII were selected for clonal propagation.

Effects of High Temperature and Drought on Yield and Quality of Soybean (고온과 한발이 콩의 수량 및 품질에 미치는 영향)

  • Currently, many studies are being conducted to cope with climate changes due to global warming and abnormal weather. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of weather on the growth, yield components, and quality of soybeans using weather data from 2017 and 2018. The average temperature in 2018 was higher than that in 2017 from R1 to R5 of the growth stage for all cultivars. On the other hand, precipitation in 2018 was reduced compared to that in 2017 for Daewon and Daepung-2ho. It was observed that the flowering date in 2018 was earlier than that in 2017 for Daewon and Daepung-2ho, but the flowering date for Pungsannamul in 2018 was similar to that in 2017. Simulating soil water content with the estimation model (AFKAE0.5) determined that there were fewer drought dates in 2017 than those in 2018, and drought lasted from R1 to early R5 of the growth stage in 2018. Soybean growth in 2017 was better than that in 2018, and seed yield and 100-seed weight of soybean were higher in 2017 than those in 2018 for all cultivars. The seed size in 2017 was larger than that in 2018 for all cultivars. Oil content in 2017 was higher than that in 2018; in particular, the difference between both years was observed for Daewon and Daepung-2ho. Protein content was higher in 2018 than that in 2017; however, there were different levels for each cultivar. Thus, these results indicate that the yield component and quality of soybeans are affected by high temperature and drought.

Functional Ingredient and Their Some Variance in Amaranth and Quinoa (비름(Amaranth)과 명아주(Quinoa) 재배종의 기능성 물질과 변이)

  • Amaranth(Amaranthus spp. L.) and quinoa (Chenpodium quinoa Willd.) are old crops from South, Central America and Central Asia and their grains have been identified as very promising food crops because of their exceptional nutritive value. Squalene is an important ingredient in skin cosmetics and computer disc lubricants as well as bioactive materials such as inhibition of fungal and mammalian sterol biosynthesis, antitumor, anticancer, and immunomodulation. Amaranth has a component called squalene (2,6,10,15,19,23-hexamethyl-2,6,10,14,22-tetraco-sahexaene) about 1/300 of the seed and $5\~8\%$ of its seed oil. Oil and squalene content in amaranth seed were different for the species investigated. Squalene content in seed oil also increased by $15.5\%$ due to puffing and from 6.96 to $8.01\%$ by refining and bleaching. Saponin concentrations in quinoa seed ranged 0.01 to $5.6\%$. Saponins are located in the outer layers of quinoa grain. These layers include the perianth, pericarp, a seed coat layer, and a cuticle like structure. Oleanane-type triterpenes saponins are of great interest because of their diverse pharmacological properties, for instance, anti-inflammatory, antibiotic, contraceptive, and cholesterol-lowering effects. It is known that quinoa contains a number of structurally diverse saponins including the aglycones, oleanolic acid, hederagenin, and phytolaccagenic acid, which are new potential in gredient for pharmacological properties. It is likely that these saponin levels will be considerably affected by genetic, agronomic and environmental factors as well as by processing. With the current enhanced public interest in health and nutrition amaranth and quinoa will most likely remain in the immediate future within the realm of exotic health foods until such time as agricultural production meets the quantities and qualify required by industrial food manufacturers.

Differences of Major Compounds in Valerian fauriei var. dasycarpa HARA and Valerian officinalis L. Grown at Different Places in Korea (광릉쥐오줌풀과 넓은잎쥐오줌풀의 산지별 유효성분의 변화)

  • This study was conducted to know the effect of cultivation area with different sea levels on essential oil content and its composition and content of major active compounds in Valerian fauriei var. dasycarpa HARA and Valerian officinalis L. The total contents of essential oil were not different according to the locality in both valerian, however, its compositions were varied. The major components in V. fauriei were detected bornyl acetate and sesquiterpene alcohol in three cultivation areas. The major compounds were borneol, borney acetate, ${\beta}\;-sesquiohellandrene$ in V. officinalis other. Among the valepotrate components known as major pharaceutically active components in Europe and Nepal valerian, valtrate was detected in a small amount in V. fauriei, but its quantity was not changed according to the cultivation area.

Comparative Analysis of Terpenoids in in vitro Culture Media of Metabolically Engineered Transgenic and Wild Type Spearmint (Mentha spicata L.) (대사 제어된 스피아민트와 야생 스피아민트 기내배양배지의 터페노이드 성분 비교 분석)

  • IPP isomerase (Iso) and Limonene synthase (Limo) are important enzymes in terpenoids biosynthesis pathway. The wild type and each metabolically engineered (Iso and Limo) transgenic spearmint (Mentha spicata Linne) plants were compared for their growth patterns and the contents of essential oil in in vitro culture media. The profile of terpenoid metabolites was obtained from the essential oil of the metabolically engineered transgenic spearmint, which was extracted using a modified SDE method, by GC-MS analysis. The growth of wild spearmint was more profuse in B5 culture medium than in other media. Significant differences in leaf and root growth patterns were observed between metabolically engineered transgenic and wild type spearmint plants. The leaves of the transgenic spearmint plants were slightly elongated but were dramatically narrower than those of wild type spearmints. The content of essential oil of transgenic spearmint was different slightly depending on the target terpenoid genes. The content of essential oils in Limo transgenic plants was higher than that of Iso, except for transgenic plant in B5 medium. The transgenic spearmint produced more terpenoids than the wild type. Iso spearmint extracts showed eleven terpenoids and a phenylpropane, while Limo spearmint extracts contained nine terpenoids. However, extracts from the wild type showed the presence of only four terpenoids.

Effects of Leaf and Pod Removal on Assimilate Translocation in Soybean Plants (적엽 및 제협처리가 콩의 동화물질 전류에 미치는 영향)

  • Effects of leaf and pod removal on changes in dry weight and on the contents of soluble sugar, starch, protein and oil in leaves and seeds of soybean [Glycine max(L.) Merr.] cultivar ‘Hwangkeumkong’ were measured at the research farm of Korea University in 1992. The upper 40% and lower 60% of leaves and pods were subjected to treatments at the growth stage of beginning pod(R3). Upper leaf-lower pod removal showed the highest leaf and the lowest seed dry weights. Soluble sugar content was no different among treatments in leaves and seeds. The highest starch content was found in leaves of upper leaf-lower pod removal. Protein content was higher in lower leaves than upper leaves and the lowest in seeds of lower leaf-upper pod removal which had the highest oil content in leaves and seeds. These results apparently indicated that photoassimilates were mobilized from upper leaves to lower seeds, and protein sources were moved from lower to upper parts but weak in remobilization from leaves for the long distance translocation during the reproductive growth period.

Leaf Quality and Fatty Acid Composition of Collected Perilla Related Genus and Species Germplasm (들깨류사 종.속 수집 유전자원의 잎품질 및 지방산 조성)

  • Leaf quality and fatty acid compositions of collected perilla related genus and species germplasms such as Perilla frutescens var. japonica Hara, Perilla frutescens var. acuta Kudo, Perilla frutescens var. crispa Decaisne, Perilla frutescens var. for viridis Makino, Mosla punctulata Nakai, Mosla japonica Maxim, Mosla dianthera Maxim were analysized. The number of leaves per tiller and leaf size of perilla germplasms were more and bigger than those of mosla germplasms. Aroma degree of mosla germplasms was higher than aroma degree of perilla germplasms. Mosla germplasms could be utilized in the breeding for high aroma perilla lines. Otherwise, the softness of perilla germplasms was higher than that of mosla germplasms. In case of oil and protein contents, perilla germplasms was higher than mosla germplasms, however compositions ratio of fatty acid, especially linolenic acid of mosla germplasms was higher than that of perilla germplasms, therefore mosla germplasms could be utilized as breeding materials with high linolenic acid for industrial oil. The linolenic acid with excellent quality and unsaturated fatty acid showed negative correlation with oil content, protein content and saturated fatty acids.

Morphological and Anatomical Characteristics of Medicinal Fructus in Apiaceae (산형과 과실 약재의 형태 및 해부학적 특성)

  • Background : As the characterization of medicinal plants is an important aspect of traditional Asian herbal medicine, this study examines the morphological and anatomical characteristics in four fructus form medicinally important plants belonging to the family Apiaceae. Methods and Results : Fruit morphology of four genera was examined using microtome sections and light microscopy. The Anethi Fructus, Anethum graveolens (Siraja) has unique wing-like and membranous lateral ribs that are, approximately $500{\mu}m$ wide. The Coriandri Fructus, Coriandrum sativum (Hoyuja) does not have oil ducts at the dorsal region of the mericarp and differs in the development of the dorsal ribs. The ribs appear upon drying and therefore, consist of primary and secondary ribs. The Foeniculi Fructus, Foeniculum vulgare (Hoehyang) characteristically develops three dominant dorsal ribs and has a strong aromatic fragrance. Finally, the Cnidii Fructus, Torilis japonica (Sasangja) has many oil ducts at the dorsal and carpophores regions and develops many hooked trichomes one the fructus surface. Conclusions : We conclude from this study that each plant has several prominent and distinguishing morphological and anatomical characteristics. Therefore, fruit morphology is very useful for identifying these medicinal plants. In addition, the correct use and herbal name need to be standardized for plants used traditionally in Asian medicine within Korea, China, and Japan.

Growth and Seed Composition of Protein, Oil and Fatty Acid as Affected by Polyethylene Film Mulching in Peanut (PE 필름 피복 재배가 땅콩 생육 및 종실의 단백질, 지방함량과 지방산 조성에 미치는 영향)

  • Flowering date of peanut variety, Daekwangtangkong and Daepungtangkong in non-mulching culture was delayed each 9 and 6 days. Seedling ratio was decreased each 3.7%, 16% and branch length was decreased each 24%, 17% more than polyethylene film mulching culture. But the number of branch in non-mulching culture was not reduced. No. of mature pods, kernel/pod ratio, 100-seed weight and kernel weight per plant was reduced extremely in non-mulching culture, nevertheless the kernel yield per 1 ha of Daekwangtangkong in non-mulching culture was similar to that of polyethylene film mulching culture but yield of Daepungtangkong was 26% higher than that of polyethylene film mulching culture owing to planting density. Protein content of Daekwangtangkong in non-mulching culture was increased 4% but that of Daepungtangkong was decreased 3% and oil content of both variety was decreased 7%, 9% respectively comparing to polyethylene film mulching culture. Oleic acid was increased but linoleic acid was decreased and O/L ratio was decreased in non-mulching culture.

Effects of Flower Color and Culture Periods on the Growth Characteristics and Quality Differences in Chinese bellflower (Platycodon grandiflorum) (길경(桔硬)의 화색(花色) 및 재배년차(栽培年次)에 따른 생육특성(生育特性)과 품질(品質) 차이(差異))

  • These studies were conducted to know the any differences in growth characteristics and root quality due to flower color and culture periods in Chinese bellflower. White flowered lines had tendency of increasing in growth characters such as stem numbers, capsule numbers and seed yield per plant, plant height, and root characters such as root weight, root length and root diameter even though statistically not significant. No differences were observed in saponin and essential oil contents between them. Three years old plants had more stems and capsules per plants, root weight and root length than two years old plants while no difference in saponin and essential oil contents between them. Saponin content was gradually decreased while essential oil content was clearly lowed in the roots from plants cultured more than 3 years even though no differences in stem and capsule numbers per plant and plant height.
