Influence of Moisture Content and Seed Dimensions on Mechanical Oil Expression from African Oil Bean (Pentaclethra macrophylla Benth) Seed

  • Purpose: New low-cost oilseeds are needed to meet an ever-increasing demand for oil for food, pharmaceutical, and industrial applications. African oil bean seed is a tropical crop that is underutilized and has high oil yields, but there have been no studies conducted on its mechanical oil expression up to now. The objective of this work was to investigate the effect of moisture content and seed dimensions on mechanical oil expression from the seeds. Methods: Fresh oil bean seeds were procured, de-hulled, and cleaned. Initial seed moisture content, obtained in accordance with the ASAE standard, was 12% dry basis (db). The seeds were further conditioned by dehydration and rehydration prior to oil expression to obtain four other moisture levels of 8, 10, 14, and 16% db. The major diameter of the seeds was measured using digital vernier calipers, and the seeds were classified into size dimensions (< 40, 41-45, 46-50, 51-55, and > 55 mm). The oil yield and expression efficiency were obtained in accordance with standard evaluation methods. Results: The highest oil yield and expression efficiency (47.74% and 78.96%, respectively) were obtained for a moisture content of 8% db and seed dimensions of < 40 mm, while the lowest oil yield and expression efficiency (41.35% and 68.28%, respectively) were obtained for a moisture content of 14% db and seed dimensions between 51-55 mm. A mathematical model was developed to predict oil yield for known moisture content and seed dimensions, with a coefficient of determination $R^2$ of 95% and the confidence level of the predictive model of 84.17%. The probability of prediction F ratio showed that moisture content influence was more significant than seed dimensions. Conclusions: The higher the moisture content and larger the seed dimensions, the lower the oil yield from African oil bean seeds.

남부지역 유채(Brassica napus L.) 논재배 봄파종 시 파종시기에 따른 생육 및 수량 특성 변화 (Changes in Growth and Productivity Characteristics by Sowing Date on Spring Sowing Rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) in Paddy Field of Southern Region of South Korea)

  • 본 연구는 남부지역(전라남도 무안군)에서 유채를 논에 봄파종하였을 경우 안정적으로 재배하기 위한 기초자료로 활용하기 위해 유채 품종('탐미유채', '중모7001', '탐라유채')과 파종시기(2월 18일, 2월 28일, 3월 8일, 3월 18일)에 따른 개화특성과 생육 및 수량 특성을 조사하였다. ① 조생종인 '탐미유채'와 '중모7001'의 종실 수량은 268 kg/10a, 264 kg/10a로 가을파종 재배 수량 320 kg/10a에 비하여 83~84% 수준이었으나, 만생종인 '탐라유채'의 경우 184 kg/10a로 가을파종 대비 59%로 낮았다. ② 파종시기에 따른 종실 수확량은 2019년은 2월 28일 243kg/10a, 2020년 2월 18일의 경우 294 kg/10a로 가장 높게 나타났으며, 파종시기가 빠를수록 수확량이 많은 경향을 보였다. 특히 2월 말 이전에 파종한 경우에는 가을 재배 대비 종실 수확량이 85% 이상이었으나, 이후 파종시기가 늦어질수록 가을파종에 비하여 종실 수확량은 50% 이하로 크게 낮아졌다. ③ 파종시기에 따른 유채 종자의 품질 특성 변화를 확인해 보기 위하여 조지방 함량과 지방산 조성을 분석하였고 파종시기에 따른 조지방 함량은 통계적으로 유의한 차이가 없었다. 하지만, 파종시기가 늦어질수록 단일불포화지방산인 올레산 함량은 줄어들고, 다중불포화지방산인 리놀레산과, 레놀렌산 함량은 유의하게 증가하는 것을 확인해 볼 수 있었다. ④ 추후 봄 파종 안정 재배법 확립을 위한 추가적인 실험을 고안하여 연구함으로써 유채의 종실 수확량을 증가시킨다면 가을파종 재배를 대체하여 부가가치를 향상시킬 수 있을 것으로 생각된다.

수삼튀김 시 튀김유 종류에 따른 수삼 및 유지의 이화학 특성 (Physicochemical Properties of Frying Ginseng and Oils Derived from Deep-frying Ginseng)

  • 본 연구는 수삼을 식용유지별, 튀김온도별에 따라 수삼을 튀김한 후 수삼과 유지의 품질학적인 특성 변화를 측정하였다. 식용유지는 대두유, 옥수수유, 올리브유 및 포도씨유를 사용하였으며, 튀김수삼과 튀긴 후 식용유지의 산가, 과산화 물가 및 유리지방산가의 함량 변화와 아크릴아마이드 생성량을 측정하였으며 반복적으로 튀긴 기름의 색도 및 점도를 측정하였다. 튀김온도가 높을수록 튀김유의 산가 및 과산화 물가는 모두 증가하였다. 수삼채를 튀김할 경우 $180^{\circ}C$ 이하의 온도에서 2분30초 이내로 튀김하는 것이 가장 적절하였으며, 이 조건에서 30회간 반복 튀김하였을 경우 포도씨유가 16.7 meq/kg으로 가장 적게 증가하였고 가장 많이 증가한 것은 올리브유로 32.6 meq/kg이었다. 튀김수삼에서의 과산화물가는 옥수수유가 10.3 meq/kg으로 가장 높게 나타났고 포도씨유가 4.7 meq/kg으로 가장 낮았다. 대두유, 옥수수유 및 포도씨유 모두 oleic acid와 linoleic acid, linoleic acid 등 불포화도가 있는 지방산은 약간씩 감소하는 경향이었고, palmitic acid와 stearic acid 등 포화지방산의 함량은 상대적으로 증가하였다. 튀김수삼 내에 아크릴아마이드 함량은 식용유지 중 올리브유가 가장 적게 생성되었고 옥수수유가 가장 많이 생성되었으며, 반복적으로 튀김을 할 경우 대두유, 옥수수유 및 포도씨유의 색도의 변화는 밝기와 적색도는 감소하였고 황색도는 증가하였으며 올리브유는 밝기는 증가하고 적색도와 황색도는 감소하는 경향이었다. 갈색화가 가장 심하게 나타난 튀김유는 옥수수유이었다. 점도는 반복적으로 튀김을 할 경우 옥수수유가 점도가 가장 적게 증가하였고 대두유, 올리브유 및 포도씨유는 110 cPs 이상 증가하는 것을 볼 수 있었다.

특용작물 품종 및 재배기술의 1962년 이후 변천 (Changes in Variety and Cultural Practices of Industrial Crops Since 1962 in Korea)

  • Researches on industrial crops in Korea before 1962 were concentrated on fiber crops such as cotton, kenaf, hemp, ramie and flax. Then research works on oil crops, sugar crops and other high income crops were followed. However, no land is shared for the production of kenaf, flax, sugar beet, sweet sorghum and sunflower at present in Korea, while the cultivation of cotton, hemp, ramie and mat rush is decreasing continuously to the marginal point. At present researches are emphasized on oil crops such as seasame, peanut and perilla and high income medicinal herbs of which cultivating acreages are increasing. Numerous varieties were released as a result of active breeding works on industrial crops since 1962, i.e. 3 sesame varieties including "Suweon 21", 3 peanut varieties including "Seoduntangkong", and 6 rape varieties including "Yudal" in oil crops, one cotton variety "Mokpo 7", one hemp variety "MS4-1", and one kenaf variety "Suweon 2" in fiber crops, and two stevia varieties "Suweon 2" and "Suweon II" in sugar crops. Quality improvement of rape seeds and development of hybrid rapes utilizing male sterile lines are the most significant results of breeding works, while the establishment of vinyl mulching cultivation of sesame and peanut are the most successful results in agronomic researches during the last 20 years.re the most successful results in agronomic researches during the last 20 years.

다년생 초본류의 향기성분 분석 (Analysis of Essential Oil from Perennial Herbaceous Plants)

  • The chemical composition of essential oil from the perennial herbaceous plants (Houttuynia cordata, Filipendula glaberrima, Peucedanum japonicum, and Ainsliaea acerifolia) was determined by GC/MS spectrometric analysis with the aid of NBS, Wiley Library and RI indice searches. The major constituents identified were $\alpha$-phellandrene (18.97%), $\gamma$-terpinene (12.32%), decanal (8.72%), 1-decanol (10.92%), decanoic acid (12.12%), and 2-undecanone (12.32%) from H. cordata, farnesol (2.83%), l-$\alpha$-terpineol (2.72%), benzenmethanol (2.03%), (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol (4.32%), and T-muurolol (2.07%) from F. glaberrima, $\alpha$-phellandrene (14.25%), endobornyl acetate (3.84%), heptanal (47.52%), octanal (2.65%), (E,E)-2,4-decadienal (2.75%), and octanoic acid (4.52%) from P. japonicum, and geyrene (9.74%), $\beta$-cubebene (11.15%), berkheyaradulen (22.32%), $\beta$-elemene (6.21%), (-)-A-selinene (4.85%), benzaldehyde (4.52%), and benzenacetaldehyde (3.40%) from A. acerifolia.

Combined application of oil cake and rice bran reduced the number of weeds and increased the yield of paddy rice in a paddy field incorporated with white clover

  • The combined application of oil cake and rice bran into the soil surface was found useful for weed control in our previous pot study. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the performance of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) while incorporated in the paddy field and effects of combined fertilizer on weed control and rice yield. A plot was divided into two parts i.e. white clover incorporated and not incorporated. The nitrogen content of the incorporated white clover was $12.5gm^{-2}$. Chemical fertilizer and combined fertilizer plots were compared with non-fertilizer conditions. The mixed ratio of combined fertilizer was oil cake 1.35 and rice bran 1.0. Combined fertilizer was applied to the soil surface, and chemical fertilizer was mixed in the soil. Nitrogen application rate was $8gm^{-2}$ for any fertilizer. The weed numbers were significantly reduced in the white clover plot irrespective of application condition both at heading and harvest time. Also, weed control ability was improved by the use of combined fertilizer. In the not incorporated plot, the number of weeds was suppressed about 90% by applying combined fertilizer. The rice yield was markedly increased by the incorporation with white clover under all fertilization conditions. Contribution rates of increased rice yield by white clover and combined fertilizer were about 55% and about 25%, respectively. The rice yield was increased by the incorporation with white clover, and the number of weeds remarkably decreased as well. Also, these effects were improved due to combined application of oil cake and rice bran.

  • Geodae-Uksae 1 is a variety of Miscanthus sacchariflorus recently discovered in Korea. It is being mass-cultivated for use as energy crop due to its superior productivity, as high as 30 ton/ha/yr for the dry mass. This study investigates the method of producing biochar and bio-oil from the crop using slow pyrolysis. Especially, the study focused on assessing the biochar properties for its application to soil to improve soil quality and sequestrate carbon. Using an electrically heated packed bed reactor, the products of slow pyrolysis from Geodae-Uksae 1 were produced over a temperature range of $300-700^{\circ}C$ with a heating rate of $10^{\circ}C/min$. The biochar, condensable vapor (bio-oil) and residual gases were characterized for the physical and chemical properties. It was concluded that the ideal temperature for pyrolysis to produce biochar is $500^{\circ}C$.

  • This study is to investigate the effect of split application and adapted fertilization application cultivation in stable medicinal herbs production of Acorus graminens S. And it accomplished one's purpose to GAP guide manual established standard method of cultivation technology, contribute to the enlargement of farm's income. Method of fertilization application were conducted under five condition compose to standard application(N-P-K-Compost: fermented mixed oil cake fertilizer applied at $4-2-6-300kg.10a^{-1}$, twofold application(N-P-K-Compost applied at $8-4-12-600kg.10a^{-1}$) cultivation. Compost (fermented mixed oil cake fertilizer) and fused phosphate applied at 100% of basal fertilizer in April 14. The split application level of standard application and twofold application(N-K) applied at 100%, 50%, 40% of basal fertilizer in April 14, 50% and 40% of top dressing were three times application (N-K) in June 1, July 15, August 15, 25% and 20% respectively. Transplanting with Naju varieties in May 12 by growing pot seedling for 40 days in 2015. Planting density were spaced 30 cm apart in rows 30 cm apart with black vinyl mulching on open cultivation. Plot design randomized block 3 repetition. Therefore, growth characteristics by 50% and 40% of top dressing were three times application (N-K) compared to standard application and twofold application (N-K) applied at 100% basal fertilizer, aerial part as a result were so many such amount of growth as number of leaf per plant, etc., Length of diameter and main root of subterranean part growth increment rising highest. Dried roots yields treated standard fertilizer 100% application($250kg.10a^{-1}$) compared to 100% from twofold application (N-K) applied at 50% basal fertilizer, 50% and 40% of top dressing were three times application increased by 16%, 20%. respectively.

Nondestructive Prediction of Fatty Acid Composition in Sesame Seeds by Near Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy

  • Near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) was used to develop a rapid and nondestructive method for the determination of fatty acid composition in sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) seed oil. A total of ninety-three samples of intact seeds were scanned in the reflectance mode of a scanning monochromator, and reference values for fatty acid composition were measured by gas-liquid chromatography. Calibration equations were developed using modified partial least square regression with internal cross validation (n=63). The equations obtained had low standard errors of cross-validation and moderate $R^2$ (coefficient of determination in calibration). Prediction of an external validation set (n=30) showed significant correlation between reference values and NIRS estimated values based on the SEP (standard error of prediction), $r^2$ (coefficient of determination in prediction) and the ratio of standard deviation (SD) of reference data to SEP. The models developed in this study had relatively higher values (more than 2.0) of SD/SEP(C) for oleic and linoleic acid, having good correlation between reference and NIRS estimate. The results indicated that NIRS, a nondestructive screening method could be used to rapidly determine fatty acid composition in sesame seeds in the breeding programs for high quality sesame oil.

  • 재식밀도 차이에 따른 Wiera 등 3품종의 성숙기, 경장, 유분함량, 원경중 및 종실중 변화를 시험한 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 1. Wiera와 Storment Goss는 밀식할수록 숙기가 단축되었으나 Taijungsun #1은 늦어져 조숙종과 만숙종의 성숙기에 대한 반응이 달랐다. 2. 품종에 따라 차이는 있으나 밀식할수록 경장이 길어지는 경향이었다. 3. 유분함량도 밀식할수록 높아지는 경향이었다. 4. 원경중과 종실종은 밀식할수록 증수되었으나 1.2m$^2$당 1,200주 이상으로 밀식할 때는 모아마의 발생으로 오히려 감수되었다. 따라사 아마재배의 적정재식밀도는 휴간 12cm$\times$주간 6cm(600주/1.2m$^2$)이었다.
