  • This paper described the capacitive sensor for the diagnosis of deterioration of electrical insulating oils applying guard-ring type the 3-terminal electrodes. To measure stable capacitance of the sensor and to determine the design factors of the sensor, we utilized computational analysis, FEM software. This capacitive sensor discern the extent of deterioration measuring relative permittivity of electrical insulating oils. The result of measuring numerous sample, mineral oils, as serviced year, we confirmed an increase in relative permittivity of oils. Moreover, we confirmed the superior characteristics of the sensor as a species, aged pattern of oils and operating temperature.

  • Combustion chamber crevices in SI engines are identified as the largest contributor to the engine-out hydrocarbon emissions. The largest of crevice region is the piston ring pack crevice. To predict and understand the oxidation process of piston crevice hydrocarbons, a 3-dimensional numerical simulation method was developed. A engine shaped computational mesh with moving grid for piston and valve motions was constructed. And a 4-step oxidation model involving 7 species was used and the 16 coefficients in the rate expressions were optimized based on the results from a detailed chemical kinetic mechanism for the oxidation condition of engine combustion chamber. Propane was used as a fuel in order to eliminate oil layer absorption and liquid fuel effect.

  • To elucidate phytotoxic effects on the growth of receptor plant, germination and growth experiment of selected species have been performed with aqueous extracts and volatile substances of leaf and of donor plant, Thuja orientalis. The extracts of T. inversely proportional to the concentration. Gas chromatography method was employed for analysis and indentification of phytotoxic substances from T. orientalis. Forty-two kinds of KDICicals including ${\alpha}-thujone$ were identified from T. orientalis essential oil. Bioassay was performed with 6 KDICical such as ${\alpha}-pinene, \;{\alpha}-terpinene, \;{\gamma}-terpinene, \; {\beta}-myrcene$, and among them bornyl acetate was the strongest growth inhibitor.

  • The chemical composition of essential oils obtained from aerial parts in spearmint, apple mint and chocolate mint, was investigated by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry analyses. (-)-Carvone (33.0%) was quantitatively major compound in spearmint, followed by R-(+)-limonene (11.7%) and ${\beta}$-phellandrene (9.7%); (-)-carvone (37.4%) and germacrene D (11.9%) in apple mint; and (-)-menthol (34.3%), p-menthone (18.4%) and menthofuran (9.8%) in chocolate mint. Hierarchical cluster analysis and principle components analysis showed the clear difference in chemical composition of the three mint oils.

  • Volatile essential oils obtained by steam distillation from 55 plant parts of 42 species of representative aromatic plants newly collected in Korean peninsula have been evaluated for antimicrobial activity against 5 microorganisms. The essential oils derived from 15 plant parts and 9 plant parts were found to exhibit very strong antimicrobial activities by more than 95% inhibition at 100 ${\mu}g/ml$ against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, respectively. Essential oil components such as l-limonene, ${\beta}-myrcene$, linalool, ${\gamma}-terpinene$, ${\alpha},{\beta}-phellandrene$, 1,8-cineole, l-borneol and bornylacetate, as a whole, have primarily contributed to the manifestation of the antimicrobial activity.

  • The essential oil composition by means of gas liquid chromatography, and the occurrence and distribution of flavonoid glycosides in leaves, peels and barks of citrus plants native to Je Ju island were investigated. Results indicate that the occurrence of p-cymene, d,l-limonene, linalool, geraniol and linalyl acetate in the essential oils, and of hesperidin in leaves, peels and barks are fairly common to these species.

  • The particle size effect on the combustion characteristics of pulverized coal was investigated in the cylindrical-shape, horizontal furnace, fired in the range of 8.8∼10.6 kw. Three differently-sized fractions (5, 30, and 44 microns in average diameter) of high-volatile bituminous coal, were burned in the test furnace. Burnout behavior of pulverized coal flame were determined through the measurement of stable species concentrations (CO$_2$and H$_2$O). Concentrations of CO$_2$were compared with the theoretical values and the result showed good agreement. Thermal behavior of pulverized coal flame were determined as maximum flame temperatures occurred at fuel-rich conditions in every case. Flame lengths were also determined by decreasing with the particle size decrease. The flame length of the fine sized coal sample was comparable to that produced by distillate oil. The color of the coal flames ranged from orange to yellow, with the flame of the fine size fraction being brighter and yellower than the others.

  • Gas transport through graphene-derived membranes has gained much interest recently due to its promising potential in filtration and separation applications. In this work, we explore Kr-85 gas radionuclide sequestration from natural air in nanoporous graphene oxide membranes in which different sizes and geometries of pores were modeled on the graphene oxide sheet. This was done using atomistic simulations considering mean-squared displacement, diffusion coefficient, number of crossed species of gases through nanoporous graphene oxide, and flow through interlayer galleries. The results showed that the gas features have the densest adsorbed zone in nanoporous graphene oxide, compared with a graphene membrane, and that graphene oxide was more favorable than graphene for Kr separation. The aim of this paper is to show that for the well-defined pore size called P-7, it is possible to separate Kr-85 from a gas mixture containing Kr-85, O2 and N2. The results would benefit the oil industry among others.

  • The coastal environment of King George Island is potentially subject to contamination by pollutants arising from station operations, such as emissions from fossil fuel burning, oil spills, waste disposal, etc. As a preparatory step to assess such impacts on the marine environment and living organisms of this island, two molluscan species (the bivalve Laternula elliptica and the gastropod Nacella concinna) were selected as biomonitors for metal pollution monitoring, and their baseline levels have been investigated for the past several years at King Sejong Station. In this review, variability of the baseline levels is discussed in relation to body size, tissue type, and sex. Natural elevations of some metals are also discussed with respect to the environmental characteristics of this region.
