When an oil-spilling accident occurs at sea, it is of the primary importance to predict the amount of oil leakage for the swift response and decision-making. The simplest method of oil-leakage estimation is based on the hydrostatic pressure balance between oil inside the tank and seawater outside of leakage hole, that is the so-called Torricelli equilibrium relation. However, there exists discrepancy between the reality and the Torricelli relation, since the latter is obtained from the quasi-steady treatment of Bernoulli equation ignoring viscous friction. A preliminary experiment has been performed to find out the oil-leaking speed and shape. Soy-bean oil inside the inner tank was ejected into water of the outer tank through four different leakage holes to record the amount of oil leakage. Furthermore, a CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) method was utilized to simulate the experimental situation. The Wavier-Stokes equations were solved for two-density flow of oil and water. VOF method was employed to capture the shape of their interface. It is found that the oil-leaking speed varies due to the frictional resistance of the leakage hole passage dependent on its aspect ratio. The Torricelli factor relating the speed predicted by using the hydrostatic balance and the real leakage speed is assessed. For the present experimental setup, Torricelli factors were in the range of 35%~55% depending on the aspect ratio of leakage holes. On the other hand, CFD results predicted that Torricelli factor could be 52% regardless of the aspect ratio of the leakage holes, when the frictional resistance of leakage hole passage was neglected.
Objectives: Antibiotics help treat Vaginitis, and prolonged usage of antibiotics can lead to resistance. Methods: This study investigates the antimicrobial activity of two types of lactic acid bacteria using essential oils. After cultivation by adding grapefruit seed extract (GSE), eucalyptus, tea tree, clove bud, cinnamon, lemongrass, thyme, and ginger oils in a specific ratio, pathogenic microorganisms, namely E. coli, C. albicans, and lactic acid bacteria were released. The number of bacteria was measured using a medium suitable for the strains. Results: The essential oils and GSE inhibited pathogenic microorganisms, and the inhibitory concentration of GSE against pathogenic bacteria (E. coli, C. albicans) was confirmed. The non-inhibitory mixing ratio was also confirmed (50 μl of eucalyptus globulus (EG) oil and 50 μl of melaleuca alternifolia oil (tea tree oil, TTO) at 200 ppm GSE (pH 5.0, 5.5, 6.0)). Conclusion: Essential oils can be considered as an alternative to antibiotics because of their antibacterial properties. They are useful as auxiliary antibacterial agents for patients under long-term antibiotic treatment.
The emulsion stability of cosmetic creams based on the water-in-oil (W/O) high internal phase emulsions (HIPEs) containing water, squalane oil and cetyl dimethicone copolyol was investigated with various compositional changes, such as electrolyte concentration, oil polarity and water phase volume fraction. The rheological consistency was mainly destroyed by the coalescence of the deformed water droplets. The slope change of complex modulus versus water phase volume fraction monitored in the linear viscoelastic region could be explained with the resistance to coalescence of the deformed interfacial film of water droplets in concentrated W/O emulsions: the greater the increase of complex modulus was, the more the coalescence occurred and the less consistent the emulsions were. Emulsion stability was dependent on the addition of electrolyte to the water phase. Increasing the electrolyte concentration increased the refractive index of the water phase, and thus decreased the refractive index difference between oil and water phases. This decreased the attractive force between water droplets, which resulted in reducing the coalescence of droplets and increasing the stability of emulsions. Increasing the oil polarity tended to increase emulsion consistency, but did not show clear difference in cream hardness among the emulsions.

The primary insulation system used in an oil-filled transformer is kraft paper, wood, porcelain and oil. Modern transformers use paper that is chemically treated to improve its tensile strength properties and resistance to aging caused by immersion in oil. But these insulation papers are mainly aged to thermal stress. Over the course of the insulation paper and oil's life it is exposed to high temperatures, oxygen and water. Its interaction with the steel of the tank and core plus the copper and aluminium of the windings will eventually cause the chemical properties of the oil to decay. High temperature have an effect on mechanical strength of cellulous paper using the layer insulation. We made two aging cell in which thermal aging tests of insulation papers and mineral oil are conducted. It is measured dielectric strength, number of acid, moisture, etc. of insulation paper and oil aged in the aging cells.
For the preparation of hardened films which can be applied as a binder for flame-resistant materials such as silica, linseed oil was subjected to a low temperature plasma treatment with argon, or oxygen gas. The film was produced much faster than so-called drying of oil in air. The SEM analysis for silica particles embedded in the hardened film after plasma treatment showed that the silica particles were immobilized on substrate and were evenly dispersed. The FT-IR spectral analysis for the plasma-treated linseed oil films demonstrated that the radicals which were formed during the plasma treatments caused the linseed oil to be cross-linked, and the plasmas attacked carbon chains of the oil randomly without focusing on specific vulnerable bonds such carbon double and carbonyl bonds intensively unless exposure times of the plasmas were prolonged too much, while the cross-linking of the air-dried film was considered to occur at the well-known typical sites, i.e., carbon-carbon double bond and ${\alpha}$-methylene carbon. Burning times, as a measure of flame/fire resistance, of silica-filled cellulose substrates, increased with increasing contents of silica.

In this study, the natural convection phenomenon of the air side and the forced convection phenomenon of the oil side were simulated in the radiator through a 3-D numerical analysis, and the total heat released by the oil side into the radiator heating plate and then to the air side was evaluated. Also, a quantitative analysis was carried out on the effect of each thermal resistance on the overall heat transfer coefficient through a 1-D thermal circuit analysis on the heat transfer mechanisms of the radiators considered in this study. In addition, for the diverse shapes of the heating plates considered in this study, the pressure drops of the oil side were quantitatively compared and evaluated. The temperatures at the air side and the oil side outlets of the radiators with 8 different fin shapes considered in this study had almost similar values showing a difference of +/-3% and, accordingly, the total heat transfer also showed similar heat dissipation performance in all the models. As a result of the 1-D thermal circuit analysis, in all the models considered in this study, while the thermal resistance of the air side accounted for 92% to 96% of the total, that of the oil side was 5 to 7%, and that of the heating plate showed a very small value of 0.02%.

As people are being exposed to many types of fast food, rancid oil is a factor affecting public health. Monitoring of rancidity in frying oils needs to be done adequately. The chemical methods that are currently used require long periods of time and expertise. The development of a device that quickly and easily measures rancidity would be helpful to manage rancidity in frying oils adequately. Due to the fact that carbon nanotube (CNT) is sensitive to acid value, we used CNT as a sensing material for detecting oil rancidity. Polyethylenimine (PEI) was coated on CNT for stable measurements. Experiments were conducted at $100^{\circ}C$ after samples were cooled from $180^{\circ}C$. The results showed a strong correlation between acid values and resistances using CNT sensors. As the acid value of oils increased, the resistance of CNT sensors increased. Development of sensors using CNT may make it possible to determine the rancidity of frying oils in real-time and on site.

The joint sealants used in the airside should resist the high temperature of the jet blast and the jet fuel oil spilled when the aircraft is maintained and filled. The material of joint sealant for the airside should be different from that for the road due to these characteristics. Three different kinds of the joint sealant materials were tested in this paper. The materials include the polysulfide, the polyurethane and the silicon. The test results show that the physical properties and the performance of the polysulfide show the high resistance to the jet blast and the jet fuel oil. When the characteristics of the airside considered, the polysulfide may apply in the both of the runway and the apron area, the polyuretane can be applied the taxiway. The use of the silicon sealant is not recommended for the airside.

In this study, the effect of the cure, mechanical properties, and oil resistance of NBR (acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber)/peroxide compounds were investigated for various co-agents. NBR compounds were characterized using a swelling test, a rheometer (MDR), and a compression set test. Mechanical properties were tested with original compounds, heated in air and exposed to the ASTM No.1, IRM 903 oil. NBR compounds were prepared using peroxide as the crosslinking agent. Trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate (TMPTMA), triallyl isocyanurate (TAIC), and 1,2-polybutadiene (HVPBD) were used as co-agents. The NBR compounds containing TMPTMA and HVPBD lowered the scorch time, while the addition of TAIC did not significantly change the scorch time. NBR compounds containing TMPTMA increased the crosslinking density, while the addition of TAIC and HVPBD lowered the crosslinking density. Moreover, the addition of TMPTMA improved the oil resistance of the NBR compound.

Thirty six essential oils from herb drugs entered in Korean official formulary, which are frequently used in oriental region, were tested for antibiotic resistance inhibition. When the oils were combined with ampicillin (Am) or amoxicillin (Amx) they showed significant inhibitory effects on the growth of multi-drug resistant Staphylococcus aureus SA2 in considerably low concentration. The most effective combinations were oils from Acanthopanacis Cortex ($0.49{\mu}g/mL$) with Am and Cnidii Rhizoma and Lonicerae Flos (2.77 and $2.79{\mu}g/mL$, respectively) with Amx as shown in minimum resistance inhibitory concentrations.
