  • The purpose of this paper is to develop the Index of Balanced Life from the Korean life style. This paper presents How Koreans live for 24 hours a day, generally. The Index of Life Style is composed of necessary life, duty life and leisure life. Specifically, this paper considers moving time of activity between indexes of balanced life. We suggest that there is a difference among the characteristics, i.e., a sex, week, state of student and region that are explained by analyzing the exploratory data. Thereafter we obtain the statistical inference from each characteristic table.

  • This study was designed to examine the quality of life among new generation housewives. Selected variables were home management consciousness and home management behavior, and satisfaction with family life. Path analysis was used to test the causal model of quality of life. The data for this study were collected from 834 housewives, and analyzed employing SPSS $PC^+$ statistical package. Major findings were as follows: 1. The satisfaction with family life was the strongest predictor of the quality of life. 2. Home management behavior had both direct and indirect effect via satisfaction with family life on the quality of life. 3. Home management consciousness had indirect effect through home management behavior and satisfaction with family life on the quality of life. Implications were discussed.

  • This study investigated the relationships among Selection, Optimization, and Compensation(SOC) as strategies of life management in mid-life crisis respect to gender and age. The subjects of this study were 170 females and 182 males at the ages between 40 and 60 living in Seoul. Selection, Optimization, and Compensation(SOC) as strategies of life management were assessed by SOC-questionnaire while mid-life crisis was assessed by Mid-Life Crisis Scale. The data were analyzed using frequencies, percentiles, means, standard deviations, Cronbach's $\alpha$, two-way ANOVAS, and Pearson's correlations. Except compensation there was no significant difference in Selection and Optimization as strategies of life management as a function of gender and age. No signigicant difference was found in mid-life crisis as a function of gender and age. There were significant negative correlations among Selection, Optimization, and Compensation(SOC) as strategies of life management and mid-life crisis except the individuation.

  • Die life is generally estimated taking failure life and wear amount into consideration. In this study, the forging die life was investigated considering both of these two factors. The fatigue life prediction for the die was performed using the stress-life method, i.e. Goodman's and Gerber's equations. The Archard's wear model was used in the wear life simulation. These die life prediction techniques were applied to the die used in the forging process of the socket ball joint of a transportation system. A rigid-plastic finite element analysis for the die forging process of the socket ball was carried out and also the elastic stress analysis for the die set was performed in order to get basic data for the die fatigue life prediction. The wear volume of the die was measured using a 3-dimensional measurement apparatus. The simulation results were relatively in good agreement with the experimental measurements.

  • Here, we investigated the prebiotic and antioxidant effects of Actinidia arguta sprout water extract (AASWE) on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced cognitive deficit mice. AASWE increased viable cell count, titratable acidity, and acetic acid production in Lactobacillus reuteri strain and showed a cytoprotective effect on LPS-induced inflammation in HT-29 cells. We assessed the behavior of LPS-induced cognitive deficit mice using Y-maze, passive avoidance and Morris water maze tests and found that administration of AASWE significantly improved learning and memory function. The AASWE group showed antioxidant activity through downregulation of malondialdehyde levels and upregulation of superoxide dismutase levels in brain tissue. In addition, the AASWE group exhibited activation of the cholinergic system with decreased acetylcholinesterase activity in brain tissue. Furthermore, AASWE effectively downregulated inflammatory mediators such as phosphorylated-JNK, phosphorylated-NF-κB, TNF-α and interleukin-6. The major bioactive compounds of AASWE were identified as quercetin-3-O-arabinopyranosyl(1→2)-rhamnopyranosyl(1→6)-glucopyranose, quercetin-3-O-apiosyl(1 → 2)-galactoside, rutin, and 3-caffeoylquinic acid. Based on these results, we suggest that AASWE not only increases the growth of beneficial bacteria in the intestines, but also shows an ameliorating effect on LPS-induced cognitive impairment.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe experiences of sexual life among Korean women with breast cancer. Methods: Data were collected by focus group and individual tape-recorded interviews. The data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Results: Participants were 13 women who had stage I, II, or III breast cancer. Four major categories were discovered. "Not interested in sexual life at all" in which participants described their struggle to live while avoiding sexual life during initial stages of disease. "Sexual life that could not go back to previous normal life" in which participants described how they began to recognize many problems related to their sexual life resulting from the loss of femininity and pain during intercourse. "Dangerous marriage due to no sexual life" in which participants illustrated how no or unsatisfactory sexual life threatened their entire marriage and family life. Finally, "rediscovery of sexual life as a vital element in life" in which participants described how, with support from their spouse, they came to realize that sexual life was an important and vital part of their life. Conclusions: The results of this study could help in developing-educational programs to improve sexual well-being of women with breast cancer and their spouses.

  • This study examined the attitude about Basic Life Support of college students, college students' perception of the efficacy and concerns regarding performing of Basic Life Support via a written survey. This study was conducted among the fresh students of college. The survey was done from March 1 to April 1, 2005. Total subjects in this study were 234. The collected data were analyzed, by SPSS. The summary of the research is as follows: The subjects who had previously heard about Basic Life Support were 94.3%. 2. The subjects who had previously learned about Basic Life Support were 11.9%. 3. The attitude of subjects to Basic Life Support education was positive. Of the respondents, 95.7% wanted to learn Basic Life Support and 56.8% would be williling to provide Basic Life Support to collapsed person. If known the method of Basic Life Support than 83.3% of subjects would be willing to provide Basic Life Support to collapsed person. 4. Over than half(56.8%) indicated, that they would attempt to provide Basic Life Support if a student collapsed. 5. Concerns regarding performing Basic Life Support on students was 'doing it correctly'. 6. The subjects who had previously heard about AED were 65.0%. This study suggests that college students high perception of the effectiveness of the Basic Life Support and that they would be willing to provide Basic Life Support in a medical emergency.
