This study assessed the feasibility of odor removal by the application of Bacillus sp. that has many advantages in sewage treatment to sewage sludge. The NH3 removal rates in the treatment of primary sludge using only aeration were measured at 24, 48, and 72 hours of treatment and the results were 12.5 %, 12 %, and 42.1 %, respectively. The NH3 removal rates of a reactor injected with BIO-CLOD made by solidifying Bacillus sp. concentrated 10 % together with other substances were measured after 24, 48, and 72 hours of treatment and the results were 43 %, 70 %, and 81 % respectively. In the cases where the Bacillus sp. cultured in NB medium was injected into the primary sludge reactor to reach injection rates of 0 %, 1.7 %, 3.3 %, and 6.7(v/v%), the TVOC removal rates measured when 72 hours had passed after the injection were 59 %, 71 %, 88 %, and 98 % respectively, which were higher than the NH3 removal rates as the NH3 removal rates measured at the same time were shown to be 29 %, 25 %, 31 %, and 48 %, respectively. In the sludge dewaterability conducted with various Bacillus sp. injection concentrations, a Bacillus sp. concentration of 4(v/v%) was considered to be suitable. The Bacillus sp. concentrations and reduction in the bad odor substances were correlated with each other. The results showed that aeration and Bacillus sp. injection will assist biological oxidation so that the bad odor substances can be removed. Based on the SRF values of the primary sludge and digested sludge, in which Alum and PAC were used, the appropriate amount of Alum aggregate reagent was judged to be 500 mg/L, and when PAC was used, 6 mg/L was judged to be appropriate.
This research was performed for developing of biological treatment process of odor gas such as MEK, $H_2S$, and toluene, which was generated from the food waste recycling process. To establish the operational conditions of odor gas removal by small-scale biofiltration equipment, it was continuously operated by using toluene as a treating odor object. When the odor treating microorganisms were adhered to fibril form biofilter, high removal efficiency over $93\%$ was obtained by biofilm formation. At 400 ppm of inlet odor gas concentration and 10 sec of retention time, the removal efficiency was $76\%$ and $93\%$ in 1 st stage reactor and End stage reactor, respectively. However, the removal efficiency remained over $97\%$ at the operational conditions above 15 sec of retention time.
This study was carried out to find deodorization effect of swine-slurry by addition of phototrophic bacteria(PTB). The pilot-scale reactors operation conditions was designed by the inoculum amounts of PTB and light-conditions. Treatment conditions was divided into 3 types; 106 MPN/ml$.$Dark(T-1), 108 MPN/ml$.$Dark(T-2), 108 MPN/ml$.$Natural light(T-3). The changes of the concentration of volatile fatty acids(VFAs), hydrogen sulfide(H2S), ammonia (NH3) and odor intensity were analyzed during the treatment period(35 days). From results of this study, the maximum intensity of odor in the headspace of the reactor T-1 was 4.82 and T-2, T-3 was 2.63, respectively. In swine-slurry of reactors used, it almost took 10 days until to be stabilized with solid and liquid phase. Intensity of odor in headspace was mainly derived from the liquid phase. The PTB inoculum method to swine-slurry was very effective in reduction of VFAs, H2S and Sulfate-reducing bacteria(SRB) concentration. Expecially, It was interested in reverse growth behaviour of SRB and PTB in these conditions.
The purpose of this study was to analyze water treatment characteristics, including the efficiency of removing algae from water purification plants, by installing a demonstration facility for decontamination of algae, including natural algae remover injection equipment, in the water purification plant. Jar-test showed that the optimum injection of natural decontaminant was 20 mg/L. Of the water contaminant treatment efficiency of the intake and water purification plants, Chl-a averaged 74.0% elimination efficiency from $5.0mg/m^3$ to $1.3mg/m^3$ and the maximum treatment efficiency was 91.5% removal efficiency when the inflow concentration of Chl-a was $11.8mg/m^3$. In addition, 51.2% and 47.1% of the taste and odor indicator items, geosmin and 2-MIB, resulted from the overgrowth and decaying of algae, respectively, to identify toxic substances and odor reduction effects. In addition, elimination efficiencies of SS and Turbidity materials were higher than 70.0%. In the injection of natural algae remover, no effects such as sudden changes in water quality due to secondary reactions were found, and appropriate levels were maintained under water treatment conditions.
This study was conducted in order to investigate bulk organic matter characteristics and behavior of geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB) during riverbank filtration, which are general surrogates of taste and odor in drinking water. Column studies were used to simulate bank filtration systems. Most of the aliphatic organic matter was removed effectively after soil passage, and it is believed to be polysaccharides according to LC-OCD and F-EEM analysises. Removal efficiencies of geosmin and 2-MIB within the filtration column reached above 95%. It was found that the removal of total dissolved organic matter has a correlation with that of geosmin and 2-MIB in the near of filtration surface (about 50cm).

Among the livestock, chickens are raised because of the merit ingested protein in low-priced cost of production and are primary livestock increased the consumption of meat. The factors of influencing condition, odor is the most important factor. Odor substances are ammonia, amines, hydrogen sulfide and mercaptan which come from night soil. Livestock are prevented from rearing by means of these odor substances. Though the henhouse is heated using hot air type heater in the winter season, it is ventilated for the control of odor because of the increase of odor concentration. In the present work, composite catalytic system combined the existing facilities(hot air type heater) with catalytic system was developed, it could controled odor and hazardous gas using the oxidation/reduction reaction without extra operating cost. Moreover, the purpose of this work is to develop the catalysts which are cost competitive and can maximize energy efficiency. The catalysts are noble metal(Pt-Rh) and composite transition metal(Mn) type.

This survey was conducted to investigate the current state of odor emission and control from 48 site of Hanwoo, dairy, swine and poultry farms in Korea. On-site complex odors assessment by the method of 6 step direct sensory evaluation and ammonia concentrations by portable gas detector on the boundary line of farms were evaluated and detected as 1.11 & 2.78 ppm, 1.67 & 2.56 ppm, 1.91 & 2.89 ppm, 1.8 & 2.4 ppm and 1.33 & 2.33 ppm, respectively. Almost of Hanwoo, dairy and poultry farms were nothing the complaints occurred for the last 2 years, however as 60% of swine farms were suffered odor complain. All of livestock operations were used the additives for improving the farm environment and spent the considerable costs for odor reduction. There were several plans almost farms, as a fortify maintenance, keep clean, tree planting, expansion facilities for manure treatment or odor reduction.
This study was conducted to evaluate effects of dietary rare earth on growth performance, blood immune- related cell population, meat quality and fecal odor emitting gases in finishing pigs. The total of sixty four (Landrace×Yorkshire×Duroc) pigs(65.42±1.16kg in average initial body weight) were used for feeding trial during 10 weeks of experimental period. Dietary treatments included 1) NC(antibiotic free diet), 2) PC (NC diet+6 weeks 44ppm of tylosin/ 4 weeks 22ppm of tylosin) 3) RE1 (NC diet + 100ppm of RE), 4) RE2 (NC diet+200ppm of RE). There were four dietary treatments with four replicate pens per treatment and four pigs per pen. During the overall periods, there were no significant differences in ADG(Average daily gain), ADFI (Average daily feed intake) and gain/feed ratio among treatments(P>0.05). Dry matter and nitrogen digestibility were higher in RE2 treatment group than other groups(P<0.05). Also, energy digestibility was higher in RE2 treatment group than PC and RE1 treatment groups(P<0.05). At the 6th week WBC(white blood cell) was significantly increased(P<0.05) in RE1 treatment group than NC and RE2 treatment groups. L* value of M. logissimus dorsi muscle color was significantly increased(P<0.05) in rare earth supplemented groups compared to NC treatment group(P<0.05). However, a* value was lower in RE1 treatment group than PC treatment group (P<0.05). In fatty acid composition of Intramuscular fat, total MUFA was significantly higher in RE2 treatment group than other groups(P<0.05). Also, total UFA was significantly increased in RE2 treatment group compared with NC and PC treatment groups(P<0.05). In fatty acid composition of back fats, total SFA of rare earth supplemented groups were lower than in PC treatment group(P<0.05). UFA:SFA ratio was significantly higher in rare earth supplemented groups than PC treatment group(P<0.05). In fecal odor emission, NH3 was significantly decreased(P<0.05) in rare earth supplemented groups compared to NC and PC treatment groups. In conclusion, the results of the experiment was affected by rare earth supplementation on digestibilities, meat quality, fatty acid and fecal odor emission gases in finishing pigs.
Alkaline treatment during preparation of anchovy extracts was studied for its changes in some of the physicochemical and sensory qualities. The dried anchovy was blended in 0-0.5N NaOH solutions and then incubated at $60^{\circ}C$ for 6 hours. After extraction the suspensions were neutralized and centrifuged. The results showed that the yields of solids and protein were increased by 3-5 fold of those of water extract as alkaline concentration and treatment time increased. The intrinsic viscosity showed little changes for the extracts prepared with 0-0.2N NaOH solution while the extracts prepared with over 0.3N NaOH resulted a initial small decrease followed by a rapid increase to the maximum point. The changes in color expressed as Hunter 'L', 'a' and 'b' values showed that the L value increased rapidly until 3 hours of treatment followed by a decrease, and 'a' and 'b' values were increased a little. The intensities of odor and taste were markedly increased by 2-3 fold for all of the descriptions investigated where clam-like odor and taste and sea complex odor were particularly significant.
Powered activated carbon(PAC) has been widely applied for controling odor causing compounds(OCCs) from water treatment plants. Because of their volatility, the OCCs can also be removed from water by air stripping methods. In this study, OCCs removal was tested with PAC adsorption, air stripping, and both PAC adsorption and air stripping from the Taecheong lake water. Removal efficiency of OCCs in terms of threshold odor number(TON) were 39.6% by both PAC (15mg/L) adsorption and aeration for 30 min, 33.6% by PAC(15mg/L) adsorption alone for 30 min, and 22.9% by aeration alone for 30 min, respectively. OCCs could be removed up to 50% by aeration for 120 min without PAC adsorption. At an extended aeration with 15mg/L of PAC, OCCs removal occurred mainly by PAC adsorption within 30 min aeration while it continued by air stripping afterward. At simulated jar tests with the raw water, removal efficiencies of geosmin and MIB were 48.3, 36.1% by coagulation and sedimentation without PAC addition. With 15mg/L of PAC on the same jar tests, the removal efficiencies were 83.1, 60.1%, respectively. Without PAC, OCCs could be possibly removed by stripping during the agitation processes.
