In order to analyze numerically the hydrophobicity of the new dyes synthesized for unmodified pure polypropylene fibers, the octanol-water partition coefficient (logP), which is one of molecular descriptors representing hydrophobicity of organic compounds, was obtained by a semi-empirical method using Chem3D software. For the dyes of higher logP than around 5, the affinity of the dyes towards unmodified polypropylene fiber was substantial. In contrast to the new dyes for polypropylene, conventional disperse dyes have logP values lower than 5 and exhibited poor affinity.

Citron peel oil was extracted from citron (Citrus funas) fruit by steam distillation, and was used as starting material for microbial conversion to synthesize attractive flavor compounds by using Enterobacter agglomerans 6L. E. agglomerans was isolated from citron peel and was able to metabolize the citron peel oil and grew well ($A_{600}:\;3.0$) on the citron peel oil as the sole carbon source. Multiple terpene metabolites were produced by E. agglomerans 6L on M9 salt media with citron oil vapor. The identified bioconversion products from the citron peel oil included trans-2-decenal, octanol, $\delta$valerolactone, $\gamma$-valerolactone, cryptone, hydroxycitronellol, cuminol, and $\gamma$-dodecalactone.
Methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE), an octane booster that is added to the reformulated gasoline, has been a widespread contaminant in aquatic ecosystem. MTBE is a recalcitrant pollutant having low biodegradability. Due to its higher water solubility and low octanol-water partition coefficient, it can be rapidly transported to the surrounding water environment. Also, MTBE is a known animal carcinogen, and is classified as a possible human carcinogen by U. S. Environmental Protection Agency. The adverse effect of MTBE to aquatic biota was widely reported. In Korea, the recent detection of MTBE in groundwater near gasoline filling stations has drawn concern to public health and ecosystem. To address this concern, the effect of MTBE to human health and ecosystem was discussed in this review. Also, ecotoxicity data of MTBE for fish, invertebrates, and algae were extensively compared to estimate the hazard concentration 5($HC_5$) of MTBE as a screening level.
This study was performed to find the atmospheric concentrations of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) at four different heights (l0, 50, 150 and 1,500 cm) using low volume polyurethane foam (PUF) plug air sampler in semi-rural area. ${\alpha}-/{\beta}-/{\gamma}-HCH$ with low molecular weights and Koa (octanol-air partitioning coefficient) in OCPs were similarly high concentrations at all heights, but the other OCPs (p,p'-DDE, p,p'-DDD, p,p'-DDT, Heptachlor epoxide, ${\gamma}$-CHL, ${\alpha}$-CHL, Trans-nonachlor) with high molecular weights and Koa decreased with increasing heights. However, the concentrations of PCBs increased with increasing height.

Sorption/desorption studies were conducted to determine sorption/desorption characteristics of phenolic compounds (phenol and 4-chlorophenol) in organically modified natural bentonite. The cationic exchange capacity (CEC) of bentonite was exchanged with a cationic surfactant, hexadecyltrimethylammonium (HDTMA), to enhance the removal capacity of organic phenol contaminants dissolved in aqueous solution. This modification produces a change of the surface property of bentonite from hydrophilic to organophilic. The single-solute and bi-solute competitive adsorptions were performed In batch mode to investigate the removal of two toxic organic Phenols, chlorophenol and 4-chlorophenol on the HDTMA-bentonite. The adsorption affinity of the 4-chlorophenol was higher than phenol due to higher octanol:water partition coefficient (Kow). The single-solute and bi-solute competitive desorptions were also performed investigate the competitive desorption of the phenolic compounds from HDTMA-bentonite. Freundlich model was used to analyze the single-solute adsorption/desorption results, while the IAST model predicted the hi-solute adsorption/desorption equilibria. The IAST model well predicted hi-solute competitive adsorption/desorption behaviors.
We successfully synthesized $Fe_3O_4/SiO_2$ nanoparticles with ultrathin silica layer of $1.0{\pm}0.5$ nm that was fine controlled by changing concentration of $Fe_3O_4$. Among various reaction conditions for silica coating, increasing concentration of $Fe_3O_4$ was more effective approach to decrease silica thickness compared to water-to-surfactant ratio control. Moreover, we found that concentration of the 1-octanol is also important factor to produce the homogeneous $Fe_3O_4/SiO_2$ nanoparticles. The present approach could be available to apply on preparation of other core/shell nanoparticles with ultrathin silica layer.
Effect of sodium taurodeoxycholate (TDC) infused intravenously on the pharmacokinetics of methylene blue (MB) was studied in the rat to investigate the role of ion-pair complexation in the body on drug elimination and disposition. Distribution volume (Vd) of MB was increased significantly (p< 0.05) by TDC infusion. Considering together with the fact that apparent partition coefficient (APC) of MB between phosphate buffer (pH 7.4) and n-octanol was increased markedly by TDC, the increase in Vd seemed to be the result of decreased polarity of MB by ion-pair formation with TDC. But total body clearance (CLt) and biliary excretion clearance (CLbil) of MB were not increased significantly by TDC.
About 2.1g of pale yellow flavor concentrate was obtained from 10kg of chopped fresh ascidians through a Likens-Nickerson steam distilllation/solvent extraction. These concentrates could be fractionated to neutral $(91.5\%),\;basic\;(1.0\%),\;phenolic\;(3.2\%),\;and\;acidic\;(4.3\%)$ fractions. Total 65 volatile compounds were identified from those concentrates. The neutral fraction was representative flavor fraction which showed a similar flavor of total steam distillates of ascidian. The major compounds $(38.2\%\;of\;neutral\;fraction)$ were identified as carbon atoms 8 to 10 of alcohols. Among these volatile alcohols, 1-octanol, 2,7-decadien-1-o1, 3-octen-l-01, 7-decen-l-ol, and l-decanol were the dominent compounds found in neutral fraction. But the basic, phenolic, and acidic fractions differs from ascidian steam distillates flavor.
Kinetic and thermodynamic aspects of the interface transfer of cefoperazone and its pivaloyloxymethyl ester were studied in a two-phase system composed of aqueous buffers and n-octanol by using the absolute reaction rate theory. In terms of the net thermodynamic parameters for the process, ${\Delta}S$ increased and ${\Delta}F$ decreased as the lipophilicity increased. With the increased ratio of forward $(k_f)$ to backward rate constants $(k_b)$, the ester was more lipophilic than cefoperazone, but the aqueous solubility was reduced.

This paper reports the experimental results for the determination of the overall partition coefficient of VOCs in unsaturated soil, A chromatographic method was used for the determination of gaseous partition coefficients to natural soil under various water content conditions. The equilibrium vapor pressure of water over saturated salt solution was used to fix the relative humidity of the air and control the water content of the soil systems. The transport behavior was studied for dichloromethane, trichloroethane and dichlorobenzene pollutants, with log octanol-water partition coefficients(log $K_{ow}$ ) which range from 1.25 to 3.39, or water to soil partitioning which varies by 135 times; water solubility constants which vary by 3 times; and vapor pressures which range from 1 to 362 torr. Water content of the soil had a pronounced effect on the effective partition coefficient(between gas and soil + water stationary phase) as well as on the effective dispersion coefficient.
