  • This study deals with the statistical analyses on the relationship between the red tide formation and the meteorological factors in the Korean coastal waters. From 1995 to 2002, the red tide was observed every year and the number of occurrences increased as well. The red tide mostly occurred in July, August, September and October. from multiple linear regression, the meteorological factors governing the mechanisms of the increase in the number of red tide occurrences are found to be a water temperature, rainfall, sunshine duration and wind velocity. But water temperature as the limited factor controlling the growth of phytoplankton (Cochlodinium polykrikoids) in 15∼$30^{\circ}c$. NO = 8.089 - 0.319WT + 0.019RF + 0.141SD + 0.l19WV (R = 0.897) in August NO = 7.531 - 0.327WT + 0.027RF + 0.208SD + 0.208WV (R = 0.894) in September Here, NO is the number of occurrence for red tide, WT is water temperature, RF is rainfall, SD is sunshine duration and WV is wind velocity, respectively. The necessary times till the day of red tide occurrence verse the day when water temperature reaches $15^{\circ}c$ are 78∼104 days, then it should be divided the coastal waters into 4 areas by the comparison among the accumulated sunshine duration, water temperature and rainfall as follows; the South West Coast (SW), South Middle Coast (SM), South East Coast(SE) and East South Coast (ES). The coastal areas that red tide occurs were complicated and various by change of marine environments. Usually red tide with a high concentrations (individual number, cells/ml) appeared in SM and SE. It was found that the general situations for the frequencies of red tide formation are mainly concentrated to 24.5∼$25^{\circ}c$ (high water temperature) and eve. 1000 cells/ml (high individual number) such as the category of red tide warning.

  • Development of an accident estimation model based on accident data can be made after accident occurrences. However, the taking of historical accident data is not easy, and there have been differences between real accident data and police-reported accident data. Also, another difficult shortcoming is that historical traffic accident data better consider driver behavior or intersection characteristics. A new method needs to be developed that can predict accident occurrences for traffic safety improvement in black spots. Traffic conflict decision techniques can acquire and analyze data in time and space, requiring less data collection through investigation. However, there are shortcomings: as existing traffic conflict techniques do not operate automatically, the analyst's opinion could easily affect the study results. Also, existing methods do not consider the severity of traffic conflicts. In this study, the authors presented traffic conflict decision criteria which consider conflict severity, including opposing left turn traffic conflict and cross traffic conflict decision criteria. In order to test these criteria, the authors acquired three signalized intersection images (two intersections in Sungnam city and one intersection in Paju) and analyzed the acquired images using image processing techniques based on individual vehicle tracking technology. Within the analyzed images, level 1 conflicts occurred 343 times over three intersections. Some of these traffic conflicts resulted in level 3 conflict situations. Level 3 traffic conflicts occurred 25 times. From the study results, the authors found that traffic conflict decision techniques can be an alternative to evaluate traffic safety in black spots.

  • This paper presents a research result that was performed to develop a more accurate freeway crash prediction model than existing models. While the existing crash models only focus on developing crash relationships associated with highway geometric conditions found on a short section of a crash site, this research applies a different approach considering the upstream highway geometric conditions as well. Theoretically, crashes occur while motorists are in motion, and particularly at freeways vehicle speed at one specific point is very sensitive to upstream geometric conditions. Therefore, this is a reasonable approach. To form the analysis data base, this research gathers the geometric conditions of the West Seaside Freeway 269.3 km and six years crash data ranging 2003-2008 for these freeway sections. As a result, it is found that crashes fit well into Negative Binomial Distribution, and, based on the developed model, total number of crashes is inversely proportional to highway curve length and radius. Contrarily, crash occurrences are proportional to tangent length. This result is different from existing crash study results, and it seems to be resulted from this research assumption that a crash is influenced greatly by upstream geometric conditions. Also, this research provides the expected effects on crash occurrences of the length of downgrade sections, speed camera placements, and the on- and off- ramp presences. It is expected that this research result is useful for doing more reasonable highway designs and safety audit analysis, and applying the same research approach to national roads and other major roads in urban areas is recommended.

  • The occurrences of ectomycorrhizal fungi were investigated in a pine-mushroom forest at Hongcheon, Korea. The fairy rings of Tricholoma matsutake were figured by the sporocarp places of T. matsutake for three years $(1995{\sim}1997)$, and the occurrences of other ectomycorrhizal fungi were surveyed with x and y dimensions for two years $(1996{\sim}1997)$. The diameters of fairy rings of T. matsutake ranged from 2m to 10m, which indicated that the age of the fairy rings as $10{\sim}50$ years when we consider that the growth of the fairy ring used to show about 10 cm per year. Russula bella, R. sororia, R. delica and Cantharellus minor were the major species occurred on the site during the survey period, and each species occupied 16.0%, 12.8%, 12.4% and 7.0% of total mushroom occurrence, respectively. From the results, we could conclude that the surveyed stand was a productivity-declining forest from the view point of pine-mushroom production. In addition, Amanita pantherina, Suillus bovinus, Ramaria flaccida and Laccaria amethystea were considered to be the indicator species for declining of pine-mushroom productivity since some fruiting bodies of the species appeared around the fairy ring of T. matsutake.

  • Organic materials, such as chitin incubated solution (CIS) combined with neem oil (NO), nano silver silica (NSS), and Bordeaux mixture (BDM), were applied with and without agricultural chemicals (AC) (insecticide and fungicide) to investigate scab and mealybug occurrences and fruit qualities on 'Niitaka' pear trees in orchards in 2006. Fruits and leaves grown under CIS+NO without AC had less than 30%, scab occurrence, but CIS+NSS or CIS+BDM without AC had higher scab occurrence. Organic materials with AC decreased the scab to less than 20%. All treatments decreased mealybug occurrences to less than 10%, except for the fruits grown under CIS+BDM without AC. Fruit qualities varied among the treatments. Hunter value a, representing for the redness degree, was higher for fruits treated with CIS+NSS and CIS+BDM without AC than those with AC. Fruits treated with organic materials without AC had greater total phenolic and flavonoid compounds as well as antioxidant capacity in flesh and greater total phenolc compounds and antioxidant capacity in peel than those treated with the AC.

  • Fusarin C, which had been produced in cereals by Fusarium moniliforme, was known as a mutagen. In this study, natural occurrences of fusarin C in 12 kinds of cereals grown in Korea, fusarin C production by F. moniliforme in cereal cultures, and the relation between fusarin C production and water activity were investigated. The results were obtained as follows; 1. Fusarin C was detected large amounts in rice, glutinous millet, sorghum millet, and corn obtained from Seoul markets randomly. But in cereals selected from Pyungtaik market, fusarin C was detected in barley and job's tears only. The amounts were much lower than those from Seoul markets. It was thought that keeping conditions of cereals during retailing period were very important factors to natural occurrences of fusarin C. 2. The amounts of fusarin C production were determined much more in rice and barley cultures with F. moniliforme. In this study, the facts are made clear that rice and barley had been more proper than corn to produce fusarin C by F. monilifome. 3. Water activity had more effect on fusarin C production in corn cultures than rice cultures. In corn cultures, water activity was higher, and the amounts of fusarin C production was larger. In case of high activity (Aw 0.85), the amounts of fusarin C was shown the largest in 1 week after then was decreased rapidly.

  • While it could become an alternative water resource, fog could undermine traffic safety and operational performance of infrastructures. To reduce such adverse impacts, it is necessary to have spatially continuous fog risk information. In this work, tree-based machine-learning models were developed in order to quantify fog risks with routine meteorological observations alone. The Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGB), Light Gradient Boosting (LGB), and Random Forests (RF) were chosen for the regional fog models using operational weather and visibility observations within the Jeollabuk-do province. Results showed that RF seemed to show the most robust performance to categorize between fog and non-fog situations during the training and evaluation period of 2017-2019. While the LGB performed better than in predicting fog occurrences than the others, its false alarm ratio was the highest (0.695) among the three models. The predictability of the three models considerably declined when applying them for an independent period of 2020, potentially due to the distinctively enhanced air quality in the year under the global lockdown. Nonetheless, even in 2020, the three models were all able to produce fog risk information consistent with the spatial variation of observed fog occurrences. This work suggests that the tree-based machine learning models could be used as tools to find locations with relatively high fog risks.

  • This study examined the spatial morphological patterns of forest habitats and the characteristics of roadkill occurrences in the forests of Mungyeong, Yecheon, Yeongju, Andong, and Bonghwa in Gyeongsangbukdo. It involved building a resistance map between habitats and analyzing connectivity based on the least-cost distance. The analysis of the distance between the forest habitat Cores derived from MSPA and roadkill points showed that roadkill occurrences were concentrated approximately 74.11 m away from the Cores, with most roadkills happening within 360m from the habitats. The connectivity analysis between core habitats larger than 1 km2 revealed 141 core habitats and 242 least-cost paths between them. The corridor distance value was found to be highest in Mungyeong city, indicating an urgent need for strategies to enhance habitat connectivity there. This research is expected to serve as foundational data for developing strategies to enhance ecosystem connectivity and restore habitats, by analyzing ecosystem connectivity and roadkill issues due to habitat fragmentation.
