The Current Status of Korean Medicine Treatment of Alopecia : Focusing on Case Reports (탈모의 한의학적 치료에 대한 국내 현황 : 증례보고를 중심으로)

  • Objectives : This study is carried out to analyze the use of Korean medical treatments on alopecia in Korean medicine clinical studies published in South Korea. Methods : Based on OASIS and KTKP with the keyword 'alopecia', published in 1996-2019.4.23., total 23 studies have been found and analyzed. We analyzed Korean medical treatment used in each cases, and investigated the tendency of use for each treatment. Results : 369 cases in 23 research papers were selected. Herbal medicine, acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, external medicine and other therapy were used as treatment for Alopecia. Herbal medicine with a cooling effect was mainly used. The acupoints mainly used were GV20, ST8, GB5, ST36, HT8, PC6, BL66. Pharmacopunctures used to treat alopecia were CF, HP, HH, BV, etc. The average duration of Korean medicine treatment was 144 days. After Korean medicine treatment, 292 cases presented improvement or complete recovery. Conclusions : According to the results, we were able to discover the current status of Korean medicine treatment of alopecia. Based on this result, further studies will be needed to establish the primary treatment direction of alopecia.

Research Trends of the Acupuncture Treatment for Vulvodynia (외음부 통증(陰痛)의 침치료에 대한 최신 연구 동향)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this review is to overview the studies of acupuncture treatment for vulvodynia. Methods: In order to investigate the effect of acupuncture treatment for vulvodynia, we searched relevant studies in Pubmed, Cochrane, Oasis, KISS up to October 2018. After searching studies, we analyzed selected studies. Results: Six studies were included in this review. There were 3 randomized controlled studies and 3 before and after studies. The outcome measurement of vulvodynia was divided into pain, sexual function, and quality of life. The acupuncture treatment was effective in relieving vulvar pain, dyspareunia and improving quality of life. Conclusions: This study shows that acupuncture treatment is one of effective treatment methods for vulvodynia. Further large randomized placebo controlled trials will be needed.

The Analysis of Korean Medicine Treatment for Anal Disease and Skin Disorder around Anal (항문질환 및 항문주위 피부과질환의 한의학적 치료에 대한 국내 임상 연구 경향)

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to analyze the trend of Korean medical treatments on Anal diseases and skin disorder around anal. Methods : Based on KCI, OASIS, NDSL, KISS with the keyword 'Anal', 'Hemorrhoid', 'Ani', 'Anal fistula', 'incontinence', 'anal prolapse', 'anal fissure'. published in 2000-2018.11.10., total 9 studies have been found and analyzed. Results : Among 9 studies, 15 cases were selected. Acupuncture, herb medicine, phamacopuncture, moxibustion, fumigation therapy and habit correction were used as treatment for Anal disease. All of research which selected have reported that the Korean medical treatment was effective. Conclusions : According to the results, Korean medical treatments can be effective treatment for anal diseases. Based of this result, studies which is multifocal will be needed steadily.

Systematic Review of Case Reports about Korean Medicine for Lung Cancer

  • Objectives: This systematic review aimed to put the case reports of lung cancer on Korean medicine (KM) together and adopt the results in clinical practice. Methods: Researches were searched using the PubMed, EMBASE, OASIS, KoreanTK, KISTI, RISS, KISS, and NDSL. The search term were 'lung cancer' and KM. There was no restriction in year. Results: 1. Among the 48 studies, 68 patients were reported in total. The types of lung cancer were non-small-cell lung cancer (n=41) and small-cell lung cancer (n=6). 2. The number of patients who received KM therapy alone was 40. On the other hand, 25 patients were treated with KM and chemotherapy simultaneously. All case reports used herbal medicine except 2 studies. Other types of treatment were acupuncture, moxibustion, pharmacopuncture, cupping, meditation, etc. 3. Several efficacy evaluation variables were used such as tumor size, changes of symptoms, duration of survival, the quality of life, and so on. The safety was evaluated by checking adverse effects using blood test. 4. Regarding the tumor response, partial response was reported in 12 cases, stable disease was in 22 cases, 50% of the total cases, which is a high level of tumor response. Furthermore, all 11 cases with the evaluation on the length of survival showed prolonged survival than the expectancy of corresponding stage, with the stable quality of life. Conclusion: We have found that the applicability of KM for treatment of lung cancer through this review. Evidence based medicine can be realized by checking cases and applying them in clinical practice.

Analysis of Pharmacopuncture Used in Facial Nerve Palsy Articles that Published in the Journal of Korean Medicine (한의학 학술지에 게재된 안면신경마비 증례 연구에서 사용된 약침에 관한 고찰)

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to analyze the trends of phamacopuncture used in facial nerve palsy related articles that have been published in the Korean medicine journal. Methods : 242 papers related to facial nerve palsy were retrieved from Oriental Medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System(OASIS) and Korean Traditional Knowledge Portal(KTKP). We selected 13 research papers treated with pharmacopuncture for facial nerve palsy. We analyzed for type of pharmacopuncture used, treatment point and clinical type. Results : 1. The number of searched articles is thirteen. 2. The most common clinical type of facial nerve palsy is Bell's palsy. Other types are accompanying tympanitis type, herpes zoster oticus, caused by traumatic temporal bone fracture type, Foville syndrome, Foville-Millard-Gubler syndrome and multiple cerebral neuritis. 3. In the case of pharmacopuncture, the most frequently used type is Hominis Placenta Pharmacopunture. The second is Hwangreonhaedok-tang and Hwangreon Pharmacopuncture. Other than that BV, Sinbaro, Jungsongouhyul Pharmacopuncture, Cornu Cervi Pantotrichum Pharmacopuncture and Ginseng pharmacopuncture are used. 4. The most frequently used part as a treatment point is ST4, ST6, TE17.

Review of Clinical Studies Using Oral Appliance in Korean Medicine (구강 내 장치를 이용한 한의 임상연구 고찰)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this review is to analyse the trends of clinical studies using oral appliance in Korean Medicine. Methods: We reviewed Korean Medicine papers by searching Korean web databases 'Korea Traditional Knowledge Portal (KTKP)', 'Korea Medical Information Portal (OASIS)', 'Academic Research Information Service (RISS)', 'Scientific and Technological Information Integration Service (NDSL)'. We classified the papers by the year of publishment, the title of journals, the type of study and contents. Results: 1. Clinical studies using oral appliance have been increasingly published since 2011. 2. Most of the studies were published in the Journal of TMJ Balancing Medicine. 3. 33 research papers were divided in to 6 original articles, 27 case reports. But almost presented a low level of evidence. 4. In the content of the studies, oral appliance were used for various diseases such as nervous system, musculoskeletal system and visceral system. Conclusions: We expect that various studies and clinical application will be actively carried out with the development of technology related to oral appliance.

Systemic Review and Meta-analysis of the Effect of Acupuncture for Migraine Prophylaxis (편두통 예방에 대한 침치료의 체계적 문헌고찰 및 메타 분석 - Pubmed를 중심으로 -)

  • Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of acupuncture on migraine prophylaxis. Method: Articles were searched from the online databases: PubMed, OASIS, NDSL, and RISS. The search keywords were "migraine prophylaxis" and "acupuncture." The inclusion criterion was randomized clinical trial. The exclusion criteria were in vivo, vitro, and review articles. Results: Eighty-nine articles were found among those published until March 2019. After reviewing the title, abstract, and original article, 10 articles were selected to show the effect of acupuncture for migraine prophylaxis. Conclusion: The effect of acupuncture for the frequency and number of days of a migraine and for the intensity of the pain seems to be effective, but the mechanism does not appear to be clear. Therefore, further research is needed in future acupuncture for migraine prevention.

Review of Clinical Research for Herbal Medicine in the Treatment of Influenza Compared with Oseltamivir (Oseltamivir를 투약한 양성대조군과 비교한 인플루엔자의 한약 치료 효과 - RCT 연구를 중심으로 -)

  • Objectives The purpose of this study is to analyze clinical studies on effectiveness of herbal medicine in influenza compared with Oseltamivir. Methods We searched the randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with herbal medicine treatment on influenza compared to Oseltamivir from the Pubmed, CNKI, OASIS, NDSL, J-stage, and CiNii. Results 14 out of 717 studies were selected and analyzed. The herbal medicine treatment had a significant effects on the alleviation of fever, cough, sore throat than the Oseltamivir control treatment. Herbal medicine had same therapeutic effectiveness like Oseltamivir on duration of influenza-like symptoms and viral shedding. No serious adverse reactions were reported from the herbal medicine treatment. Conclusions The results of these trials showed that the herbal medicine may be more effective than the Oseltamivir in the treatment of influenza. Well-designed RCTs for domestic herbal medicine treatment on influenza are needed to prove its efficacy clearly.

Review of the Korean Medicine Studies for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in Children (소아 주의력결핍 및 과잉행동장애 (ADHD)의 한의학적 치료에 대한 국내외 연구 동향)

  • Objectives The purpose of this study to analyze the effect of Korean medicine therapy of Attention deficit hyperactivity disorders. Methods Electronic research articles were selected by using NDSL, OASIS, KISS, KMBASE, K-portal, Pubmed, Cochrane, and Ebscohost. Results We analyzed fifteen studies about Korean medicine treatment of Attention deficit hyperactivity disorders. There are eleven studies on the acupuncture treatment, and the most commonly used acupoints were GV20 and EX-HN1. There are eight studies on the herb medicine treatment. The most commonly used herbal materials are Root of Rehmanniae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata, Root of Rehmanniae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata, Sclerotium of Poria cocos Wolf, and Rhizome of Acori Gramineri Rhizoma. Syncope and hematomas were common side effects of the acupuncture treatment. Also, the acupuncture needle can be stuck or bent during the treatment. In most studies, Attention deficit hyperactivity disorders was improved when treated with Korean medicine. Conclusions More studies are needed to demonstrate the effectiveness of Korean medicine in Attention deficit hyperactivity disorders. This study can be used for various studies of Attention deficit hyperactivity disorders.

Literature Review for the Clinical Application of Dietary Supplements in Cellulite Treatment (셀룰라이트 치료 시 식이 보조제의 임상적 활용을 위한 문헌적 고찰)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate the efficacy and the mechanisms of dietary supplements in cellulite treatment, and then to provide the theoretical and clinical basis for the cellulite treatment in Korean Medicine. Methods: We searched for articles from Korea, China, and English electronic database (Koreanstudies Information Service System [KISS], National Digital Science Library [NDSL], KMbase, Research Information Sharing Service [RISS], Oriental Medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System [OASIS], National Assembly Library, Korean Traditional Knowledge Portal, Google scholar, PubMed, Scopus, China National Knowledge Infrastructure [CNKI]) until April 2018. We chose clinical trial studies by inclusion criteria through titles, abstracts and articles. Results: A total of 10 studies were selected through search. The experimental group had shown more effective cellulite improvement in 90% of studies. Also, improvement of symptoms related with cellulite like pain, edema, heaviness and increase of skin surface temperature were observed in experimental group. In addition, the density of connective tissues of the dermal layer was increased in experimental group. Conclusions: The use of dietary supplements in cellulite treatment is thought to be effective through mechanisms that antioxidant efficacy, microcirculation improvement, interstitial matrix improvement, diuretic effect, and skin metabolic activity effect.
