Anthraquinones with Immunostimulating Activity from Cassia tora L.

  • Many of plants had been reported having immunostimulating activity. This study reports the immunostimulating activity of Cassia tora L. (Leguminosae) seed, by means of solvent extraction method. Ethanol extract and solvent fractions, n-hexane, chloroform, ethylacetate, n-butanol and aqueous layer of Cassia tora L. seed were tested for immunostimulating activity in vitro. The ethylacetate-soluble fraction caused significant inhibition on the production of nitric oxide by murine macrophages (RAW 264.7), and mouse splenocytes were also stimulated at the concentration of 10 pgfmL. Three anthraquinones, chrysophanol (1), isochrysophanol (2) and aloe-emodin (3) with immunostimulating activity were isolated from the ethylacetate-soluble fraction of Cassia tora L. seed through activity-monitored fractionation and isolation method. These results permit Cassia tora L. to be useful as one the of natural immunostimulating crops.

  • Garlic (Alium sativum L.), originated in the Kirghiz region of Central Asia, is oneof the oldest cultivated plants. It has reached Europe via Egypt in the days of Pharaohs. Since then, the legendary medicinal properties attributed to garlic have attracted human interests for thousands of years. However, the research on the medicinal effect of garlic, mostly on this anticarcinogenic actions has been systematically performed only for the last tow or three decades. Many researches have proven that garlic inhibits neoplasia elicited by chemical carcinogens using in vitro or in vivo experimental systems. Attention has recently been focused on assessing the therapeutic or chemopreventive measures of garlic compounds against carcinogenesis in animals. The active principles of he garlic extract, mainly the sulfur compounds and their derivatives have been deeply scrutinized into their chemical, functional and medicinal properties.

  • This study was conducted investigate the effect of medicinal plant extracts on physiological and sensory characteristics. The medicinal plant extracts were added to chocolate at a weight percentage of 0, 3 and 6%. Color values(L-value, redness, and yellowness), total flavonoids, DPPH radical scavenging activity, and sensory characteristics made with varying various medicinal plants concentrations of the additives were measured. In sensory evaluation, significant differences(p<0.05 and p<0.01) were shown in taste, texture, and overall acceptability depending on the addition of plant extracts, but there were no significant differences in chocolate aroma and bitterness properties.

Effects of Ixeris Sonchifolia H. Fiet on Lipid Metabolism and Liver Function of Rats Administered with Ethanol (고들빼기 첨가 식이가 알콜투여 흰쥐의 지방대사와 간기능에 미치는 영향)

  • To investigate the effects of Ixeris sonchifolia Hance diets on serum and hepatic lipid levles and enzyme activities in rats administered with ethanol chronically, Sprague-Dawley male rats were AIN-76 diet(control), control diet plus ethanol, control plus Ixeris sonchifolia Hance diet, or control plus Ixeris sonchifolia Hance diet plus ethanol for 30 days. Ixeris sonchifolia Hance diets significantly decreased the serum total cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL-cholesterol, and GOT levels that were increased due to the chronic ethanol administration. In addition, Ixeris sonchifolia Hance diets significantly decreased the liver triglyceride and total lipid levels that were increased due to the ethanol administration. The present findings, combined with previous data showing differences in the effects of cabbage diets having a high or a low level of GABA on the lipid levels and the serum Y-GPT activity of rats(Cha and OH[2000] J. Korean Soc. Food Sci. Nutr. 29, 500-505) raise the possibility that GABA in plants could have a nytraceutical role in the recovery of chronic alcohol-related diseases.   • Korean cabbage, a member of the Brassicaceae family which also includes cauliflower, mustard, radish, and turnip plants, is a crucial leafy vegetable crop. Korean cabbage is harvested after completion of the leaf heading process and is often prepared for use in "baechu kimchi", a traditional Korean food. Many of the components in Korean cabbage are essential for proper human nutrition; these components can be divided into two groups: primary metabolites, which include carbohydrates, amino acids, fatty acids, and organic acids, and secondary metabolites such as flavonoids, carotenoids, sterols, phenolic acids, alkaloids, and glucosinolates (GSLs). Using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, this study examined the variety of volatile compounds (including isothiocyanates) contained in Korean cabbage and its seed, which resulted in the identification of 16 and 12 volatile compounds, respectively. The primary volatile compound found in the cabbage was ethyl linoleolate (~23%), while 4,5-epithiovaleronitrile (~46%) was the primary volatile component in the seed.

Changes on the Characteristics of Salted Mackerel Treated Extracts of Edible Plants during Storage (식용식물 추출물을 처리한 간고등어의 저장 중 특성변화)

  • This study was carried out to analyze the quality change of salted mackeral treated with extracts of edible plan(Diospyros kaki, Teucerium veronicoides and Zanthoxylum schinifolium) during storage for develope of preparation methods and high quality of mackerel. The Hunter's color values of salted mackerel was not changed during strange. L, a and b value of salted mackerel teated with Korean herbal extracts was lower changed than those of control(mackerel not treated extracts of edible plants). Adhesiveness, and viscosity of salted mackerel was higher at $4^{\circ}C$ during storage than those at $25^{\circ}C$, and was higher in groups treated extects of edible plants at early storage than those in control group. Hardness was low in the salted mackerel treated extracts of edible plane and control group during storage. The salted mackerel treated Z. schinifolium extracts was the highest scores in sensory evaluation among groups.

Screening of Antibacterial Agent Against Streptococcus mutans from Natural and Medicinal Plants, (자생 및 약용 식물의 Streptococcus mutans항균 활성의 검색)

  • Oral streptococci are major constituents of dental plaques, and their prevalence is closely linked with various pathologic symptoms, such as dental caries. To develop natural anticaries agent, we prepared 309 kinds of plant extracts from 215 species of edible or medical plants, and antibacterial activity of the extracts against Streptococcus mutans JC-2 were evaluated based on 96 well microtiter plate assay and disk paper method, subsequently. Among the tested plant extracts, Ailanthus altissima, Paeonia lactiflora, Rubus phoenicolasius, Aralia continentalis, Quercus acutissima, Persicaria hydropiper and Agrimonia pilosa extracts showed strong antimicrobial activity. Determination of minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the selected seven plant extracts showed that Ailanthus altissima, Persicaria hydropiper and Quercus acutissima extracts ($MIC=25\∼30[\mu}g/ml$) has potential as a source of natural anticaries agents.

Anti-Anaphylactic Effects of Natural Extract Compounds(AllerQ) in the Rats (천연물 복합체가 추출물(알러큐)의 알러지 유발 흰쥐에 대한 항알러지 효과)

  • Medicinal plants are of great importance in providing healthcare to a large portion of the population in Korea. A number of plants are described in Dong-Ui-Bo-Gam for use in the treatment of allergic disorders, namely psoriasis, eczema, bronchial asthma, etc. In this study, we evaluated the effect of AllerQ, which is multi-complexes of various plants extracts such like Mori folium, Scutellaria baicallensis, Glycyrrhiza uralnsis, Mentha sacharinensis and Poncirus trifoliata on compound 48/80 induced anaphylactic shock, ovalbumin induced asthma in vivo and anti-IgE antibody induced hypersensitivity in vitro. We found antianaphylactic or antiallergic properties of AllerQ when given orally. AllerQ for prophylactic treatment for anaphylactic shocks have produced good results. AllerQ may modulate various aspects of immune function and allergic inflammation. In the present study, we analyse the effects of AllerQ on mast cell degranulation, mortality, cAMP/cGMP, O₂, H₂O₂ level, cyokine production and on the elicitation of IgE-mediated mast cell-dependent allergic inflammation in vivo and in vitro. We have established that AllerQ inhibited histamine release, cAMP/cGMP, O₂, H₂O₂ level, IL-4, tumor necrosis factor-alpha(TNF-α) and IL-6 production without having any significant physical change. These effects have been observed in mast cell(in vitro) and serum(in vivo) derived from three different origins that were activated by either immunological or non-immunological stimuli. These results suggest that the antianaphylactic and antiasthma tic action of AllerQ may be associated with an increase in the intracellular inhibition of the cAMP phosphodiesterase. Furthermore, AllerQ identified as potent inhibitors on O₂, H₂O₂ and cytokine activity. these data suggest that AllerQ may have an inhibitory role in mast cell-mediated allergic inflammation, and thus might be considered as an useful functional food.

The Inhibitory Effects of Chloroform Fraction Extracted from the Dandelion (Taraxacum platycarpum D.) against Lactic Acid Bacteria and Yeast Related to Kimchi Fermentation (포공영 클로로포름 분획의 김치 유산균 및 효모에 대한 저해 효과)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of solvent extracts from medicinal plants on the fermentation of kimchi. Five microorganisms related to kimchi fermentation were selected and the antimicrobial activities of solvent fractions from medicinal plants were investigated. The chloroform fraction from the methanol extract of dandelion (Taraxacum platycarpum D.) exhibited inhibitory activity against five strains such as Lactobacilli plantarum, Lactobacilli brevis, Leuconostoc mesenteroides, Enterococcus faecalis and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The chloroform fraction from the methanol extract of Dandelion inhibited the growth of E. faecalis and Leu. mesenteroides at the concentration of 80 mg/mL. Scanning electron micrographs of Leu. mesenteroides and E. faecalis treated with chloroform fraction 80 mg/mL exhibited morphological changes, including irregularly contracted cell surface.

Analysis of Asarone, Coumarin and Thujone in Medicinal Plants Used in Brewing a Korean Traditional Folk Wine (민속주 부재료로 이용되는 식물성 방향재료 및 약용재료중의 Asarone, Coumarin, Thujone의 분석)

  • To detect the toxic relevant components, asarone, coumarin and thujone, in the 87 medicinal plants used in brewing a Korean traditional folk wine, their 20% ethanol extracts were prepared and purified by a SPE(solid phase extraction) method. The toxic components in the purified extracts were identified by GC-FID and GC/MS analysis. On analyses, asarone was detected in 6 species, Acorus gramineus Solander, Acorus asiaticus Nakai, Angelia gigus Nakai, Santalum album, etc.; coumarin in 22 species, Anethum graveolens, Foeniculum vulgare Gaertner, Lithosperum erythrorhizon Siebold et Zuccarinii, etc.; thujone in 24 species, Achyranthes japonica Nakai, Amomum xanthiodes Wallich, Artemisia asiatia Nakai, seed of Cannabis sativa L., Caragana sinica R., Chrysanthemum morifolium Ramat, Codonopsis lanceolata Bentham et flooker, Foeniculum vulgare Gaertner, etc.
