유치원 원아의 WLI 분포에 따른 에너지 및 영양소의 섭취량, 식습관의 차이에 관한 연구 (Measuring Differences in Food Iintakes and Dietary Habits of Preschool Children by the Weight-Length Index)

  • This study was conducted to obtain data and offer advice regarding dietary intake at kindergarten and to recommend dietary habits to prevent childhood obesity. The study was conducted in 85 children aged 4 to 5 years. Body weight and height, dietary intakes of lunch served at Kindergarten and questionnaires for dietary behaviors in Kyeongnam area were studied. All subjects were classified by their weight-length index (WLI). According to the standard WLI values, 41.2% of the children were within the normal value ($90{\leq}$WLI<110), 23.5% of the children were overweight ($110{\leq}$WLI<120), and 35.3% of the children were obese ($WLI{\geq}120$). The mean energy intake at lunch for kindergarteners was $287.1{\pm}13.4$ kcal in the normal group, $307.6{\pm}10.2$ kcal in the overweight group and $323.7{\pm}8.6$ kcal in the obese group. The percent energy of estimated energy requirement (EER) was 21.8%. The intake of protein, iron, zinc, vitamin A, and pyridoxine were significantly different by WLI (P<0.05). A comparison of nutrients in the lunch menu provided with those of 1/3 recommended intake (RI) showed that preschoolers took in fewer calories, calcium, and vitamin $B_2$, and that their deficiency rates were high (81.2%, 76.5% and 70.6% of recommended levels, respectively). There was a significant difference in the preference of fruits and milk and dairy products by WLI. Therefore, a nutritional education program and new guidance in the proper nutrition management for kindergarteners should be developed to enhance nutritional status during childhood.

Non-Pharmacological Treatments of Psoriasis in Persian Medicine a Narrative Review

  • Psoriasis is a chronic disease that has no definitive cure. In this review study, the main sources of Persian Medicine (PM) such as the Canon of Medicine (by Avicenna) and Al-Havi (by Rhazes) were assessed to identify non-pharmacological treatments for psoriasis. Several treatments that are recommended for this disease include nutritional advice, lifestyle modifications, and manipulation therapy such as wet cupping (Hijamah), leech therapy, and phlebotomy (Fasd). These recommendations may help to prevent recurrence and be useful in improving psoriasis. The efficacy of PM recommendations to improve psoriasis should be evaluated in future studies.

IT-기반의 임신성 당뇨병 영양관리 프로그램 개발을 위한 요구도 조사 (Needs for Development of IT-based Nutritional Management Program for Women with Gestational Diabetes Mellitus)

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine self-management status, nutritional knowledge, barrier factors in dietary management and needs of nutritional management program for women with Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM). Methods: A total of 100 women with GDM were recruited from secondary and tertiary hospitals in Seoul. The questionnaire composed of general characteristics, status of self-management, dietary habits, nutrition knowledge, barrier factors in dietary management, needs for nutrition information contents and nutritional management programs. Data were collected by a self-administered questionnaire. All data were statistically analyzed using student's t-test and chi-square test using SAS 9.3. Results: About 35% of the subjects reported that they practiced medical nutrition and exercise therapy for GDM control. The main sources of nutrition information were 'internet (50.0%)' and 'expert advice (45.0%)'. More than 70% of the subjects experienced nutrition education. The mean score of nutrition knowledge was 7.5 point out of 10, and only about half of the subjects were reported to be correctly aware of some questions such as 'the cause of ketosis', 'the goal of nutrition management for GDM', 'the importance of sugar restriction on breakfast'. The major obstructive factors in dietary management were 'eating more than planned when dining out', 'finding the appropriate menu when dining out'. The preferred nutrition information contents in developing management program were 'nutritional information of food', 'recommended food by major nutrients', 'the relationship between blood glucose and food', 'tips on menu selection at eating out'. The subjects reported that they need management program such as 'example of menu by calorie prescription', 'recommended weight gain guide', 'meal recording and dietary assessment', 'expert recommendation', 'sharing know-how'. Conclusions: Based on the results of this study, it is necessary to develop a program that provide personalized information by identifying the individual characteristics of the subjects and expert feedback function through various information and nutrition information contents that can be used in real life.

초등학교 저학년 영양교육 학습 자료의 디자인 방향 설정에 관한 연구 (Establishing Design Directions for Nutrition Education Materials for Early Elementary Students in South Korea)

  • 오늘날 아동 비만의 위험성과 영양불균형이 사회적 문제로 떠오르면서 국내에서도 식생활 및 영양정보를 다루는 교육용 콘텐츠·자료 개발이 다양한 형태로 시도되고 있으며 그 중요도가 높아지고 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 초등학교 저학년 학생을 대상으로 아동이 학교에서 이루어지는 영양교육과 연계하여 자기 주도적으로 학습하고, 습득한 지식을 실생활에 적용하여 올바르고 균형 있는 식생활을 할 수 있도록 하기 위한 맞춤형 영양교육 학습 자료를 디자인 방향을 설정하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 선행연구 및 문헌조사 등을 바탕으로 초등학교 저학년 영양교육에 대한 이론적 고찰을 시행하고, 의료·교육·디자인계 전문가 자문을 통해 저학년 아동을 대상으로 실행될 설문조사를 위한 문항 요소를 도출하여 서울시와 경남 창원시 소재의 초등학교 2곳의 1, 2학년 어린이 110명을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하였다. 평가 결과, 저학년 아동은 영양교육에 대해 긍정적인 반응을 보였으며, 멀티미디어 기반의 컨텐츠를 활용한 학습 유형과 퀴즈활동을 선호하고, 칼로리 조절 식사에 관하여 학습하고자 하는 의향이 있었다. 학습 자료 디자인 요소에 대해서는 주황, 초록 계열의 색과 고딕류 서체를 선호하였으며, 영양에 대한 정보 표현법으로는 실제의 모습과 흡사한 그림체와 수치측량법 사용에 긍정적인 의견을 나타냈다. 이를 바탕으로 초등학교 저학년인 1,2학년 학생들의 눈높이에 맞춘 자기주도학습 영양교육자료 디자인의 방향성을 설정하였다.

Low consumption of fruits and dairy foods is associated with metabolic syndrome in Korean adults from outpatient clinics in and near Seoul

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to examine differences in nutrient intake and food consumption by the presence of metabolic syndrome in Korean adults. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Study subjects in this cross-sectional study were recruited from four outpatient clinics in and near the Seoul metropolitan area of South Korea between 2006 and 2012. A total of 668 subjects (413 men and 255 women) aged ${\geq}30y$ were included in the final data analyses. For each subject, daily nutrient intake and food consumption were calculated using three days of dietary intake data obtained from a combination of 24-hour recalls and dietary records. To evaluate food consumption, mean number of servings consumed per day and percentages of recommended number of servings for six food groups were calculated. Metabolic syndrome was defined using the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III criteria. The general linear model was performed to examine differences in nutrient intake and food consumption by sex and the presence of metabolic syndrome after adjustment for potential confounding variables. RESULTS: Nutrient intake did not differ by the presence of metabolic syndrome in both men and women. Men with metabolic syndrome had lower consumption and percentage of the recommendation for fruits compared with those without metabolic syndrome (1.6 vs. 1.1 servings/day, P-value = 0.001; 63.5 vs. 49.5%, P-value = 0.013). Women with metabolic syndrome showed lower consumption and percentage of the recommendation for dairy foods than those without metabolic syndrome (0.8 vs. 0.5 servings/day, P-value = 0.001; 78.6 vs. 48.9%, P-value = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Low intakes of fruits and dairy foods might be associated with the risk of having metabolic syndrome among Korean adults. Dietary advice on increasing consumption of these foods is needed to prevent and attenuate the risk of metabolic syndrome.

Development and Validation of a Cancer Awareness Questionnaire for Malaysian Undergraduate Students of Chinese Ethnicity

  • Objectives: To describe the development and validation of a cancer awareness questionnaire (CAQ) based on a literature review of previous studies, focusing on cancer awareness and prevention. Materials and Methods: A total of 388 Chinese undergraduate students in a private university in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, were recruited to evaluate the developed self-administered questionnaire. The CAQ consisted of four sections: awareness of cancer warning signs and screening tests; knowledge of cancer risk factors; barriers in seeking medical advice; and attitudes towards cancer and cancer prevention. The questionnaire was evaluated for construct validity using principal component analysis and internal consistency using Cronbach's alpha (${\alpha}$) coefficient. Test-retest reliability was assessed with a 10-14 days interval and measured using Pearson product-moment correlation. Results: The initial 77-item CAQ was reduced to 63 items, with satisfactory construct validity, and a high total internal consistency (Cronbach's ${\alpha}$=0.77). A total of 143 students completed the questionnaire for the test-retest reliability obtaining a correlation of 0.72 (p<0.001) overall. Conclusions: The CAQ could provide a reliable and valid measure that can be used to assess cancer awareness among local Chinese undergraduate students. However, further studies among students from different backgrounds (e.g. ethnicity) are required in order to facilitate the use of the cancer awareness questionnaire among all university students.

Improvement in metabolic parameters in obese subjects after 16 weeks on a Brazilian-staple calorie-restricted diet

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The standard pattern of Brazilian food consumption is based on the combination of rice and beans served together in the main meals. This study assessed the effects of Brazilian-staple calorie-restricted (BS-diet) dietary advice, with brown rice and beans, on metabolic parameters, body composition, and food intake in overweight/obese subjects. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Twentyseven subjects were randomly assigned to a conventional-type calorie-restricted diet (CT-diet) (n = 13) or a BS-diet (n = 14). Glucose metabolism, lipid profile, anthropometric and body composition parameters, and food intake were measured before and after 16 weeks. Paired t-tests/Wilcoxon tests were used for comparison of differences from baseline and unpaired t-tests/Mann-Whitney tests were used for comparison of differences between the groups. RESULTS: After16 weeks, both groups showed reductions in weight and waist circumference (P < 0.02), and the BS-diet group showed a decrease in body fat (P = 0.0001), and significant improvement in glucose metabolism (fasting plasma glucose, glucose and insulin areas under the curve, Cederholm index, and HOMA2-$%{\beta}$) ($P{\leq}0.04$) and lipid profile (cholesterol, triacylglycerol, LDL-c, VLDL-c, and cholesterol/HDL-c ratio) ($P{\leq}0.05$). In addition, the BS-diet group showed significant improvement in HOMA2-$%{\beta}$, compared to the CT-diet group (P = 0.03). The BS-diet group also showed a significant reduction in energy, lipids, carbohydrate, and cholesterol intake ($P{\leq}0.04$) and an increase in fiber intake ($P{\leq}0.001$), while the CT-diet group showed a significant reduction in intake of energy, macronutrients, PUFA, and cholesterol ($P{\leq}0.002$). CONCLUSIONS: These results demonstrate the benefits of the BS-diet on metabolic parameters in obese subjects.

브라질 상파울루시의 한식당 현황 및 만족도 조사 (A Study of the Current State of Korean Restaurants in São Paulo in Brazil)

  • To find an efficient solution for the globalization of Korean food in Brazil, we conducted a survey about the satisfaction of Brazilian natives who had visited a Korean restaurant, and possible suggestions for improvement. We also conducted indepth interviews with 13 owners of Korean restaurants in Seo Paulo, Brazil, about their plans to improve Korean food to be more appealing to the Brazilian palate. Our research shows that Korean restaurants had a below average reputation for employee kindness, menu taste and variety, interior, mood, and accessibility. As a result of the survey, we found that Korean restaurants were considered in general to be below average. The survey also showed that the higher the level of a person's economic standing, the less satisfaction they had with Korean food restaurants. We also found that the most common pieces of advice that Brazilian women had regarding Korean restaurants were to offer more variety in the menu, maintain a cleaner restaurant, and to actively engage in public relations. The general concerns of everyone surveyed focused on cleanliness and public relations of the restaurant. However, food-related people focused more on the taste and quality of the food. Sao Paulo is currently the most well-developed economic center in South America, so the world's food service industry is pushed to the front of its ongoing development. For Korean food to make inroads into Brazil, Korean restaurants need to change the niche that they occupy. First-generation family businesses and second-generation specialized family businesses coexist in that city. So first of all, to localize the Korean food for Brazilian tastes, a menu system that will easily allow natives to access Korean food must be established. And second of all, it must support the total food culture by improving distribution, sanitation management, and marketing methods that can get the natives to like Korean food ingredients.

한국 유아의 영양 섭취 현황: 2007~2009년 국민건강영양조사를 바탕으로 (Nutritional Status of Korean Toddlers: From the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2007~2009)

  • 목적: 한국 영유아의 영양 섭취 실태에 대한 연구가 매우 제한적으로 진행되고 있어, 본 연구에서는 국민건강영양조사를 이용하여 한국 유아들의 식이 행태, 식이보충제 및 영양소 섭취 실태를 알아보고자 하였다. 방법: 2007~2009년까지의 제4기 국민건강영양조사에 참여한 4세 미만의 영유아 930명(남 499명, 여 431명)을 대상으로 영아기의 식이 행태, 식이보충제 및 영양소 섭취 실태를 조사하였다. 결과: 식이보충제를 복용하는 유아는 48.7%로 절반가량이었으며 비타민/미네랄제가 35.3%로 제일 많았고 정장제 14.2%, 초유 8.2%였다. 식이보충제를 시작한 동기로는 95.4%가 친척이나 친구의 권유로, 0.7%가 자신의 판단으로 보충식을 시작했다고 답하였으며 의사의 권유로 보충제를 시작하는 비율은 0.3%에 불과하였다. 영양소 섭취 조사에서 유아의 51.6%는 탄수화물의 적정 비율을 섭취하고 있었고 32.7%가 적정 비율을 초과하여 섭취하고 있었다. 단백질의 경우 대상아의 94.8%가 적정 비율을 섭취하고 있었고, 지방의 경우 53.4%는 적정 비율을, 38.8%는 적정 비율 미만을 섭취하고 있었다. 칼슘을 평균필요량 미만으로 섭취하는 유아의 비율은 1세 53.9%, 2세 55.2%, 3세 65.6%, 철을 평균 필요량 미만으로 섭취하는 유아는 1세 52.0%, 2세 48.7%, 3세 48.4%였다. 영아기의 수유 패턴은 혼합 수유가 57.4%로 제일 많았고 32.2%가 모유 수유만, 10.4%가 분유 수유만을 하고 있었다. 이유식 도입시기는 4~6개월이 64.5%로 가장 많았고, 우유 도입시기는 12~17개월이 71.1%로 가장 많았다. 결론: 우리나라 만 1~만 3세 이하 유아의 절반가량이 의사의 상담 없이 식이보충제를 복용하고 있었으며, 칼슘, 철 섭취가 부족할 위험이 높았다. 이 시기의 영양관리를 위해 소아청소년과 의사를 비롯한 전문가의 역할이 보다 강조될 필요가 있다.

소아 환자를 진료하는 의사들의 영아기 영양에 대한 상담 실태 조사 (Survey on Counseling about Infant Nutrition Among Doctors on Practicing Pediatric Patients in Primary Medical Facilities)

  • 목 적 : 이 연구는 소아과 진료를 표방하는 1차 의료 기관의 의사를 대상으로 영아기의 영양에 대한 설문 조사를 통해 이들이 영아기 영양에 대하여 얼마나 바르게 상담을 해 주고 있는지를 알아보기 위해 시행하였다. 방 법: 2000년 7월부터 8월까지 대구광역시에서 개원을 하고 있거나 봉직하고 있는 소아과 전문의(1군)와 소아과를 진료과목으로 표방하고 있는 비 소아과 전문의 또는 일반의(2군)를 대상으로 영아기 영양에 관한 육아 상담 내용을 미리 작성한 객관식 10문제를 이용하여 방문조사 하였다. 조사에 참여한 의사는 267명으로 소아과 전문의가 101명, 비 소아과 전문의 또는 일반의가 166명이었다. 비 소아과 전문의는 내과 63명, 일반외과 21명, 산부인과 20명, 가정의학과 16명, 이비인후과 7명, 정신과, 흉부외과, 신경과 전문의가 각각 1명이었다. 전문의 자격이 없는 일반의는 36명이었다. 결 과 : 100점 만점으로 평가한 결과 1군의 점수는 $73.0{\pm}15.8$점, 2군은 $45.1{\pm}18.4$점으로 두 군간에 의미 있는 차이가 있었다(P<0.05). 비소아과 전문의 중 전문 과목에 따른 점수는 내과 전문의가 $46.5{\pm}20.2$, 산부인과 전문의 $44.5{\pm}20.6$, 일반외과 전문의 $40.5{\pm}15.6$, 가정의학과 전문의 $56.3{\pm}16.9$, 이비인후과 전문의 $47.1{\pm}15.0$, 이었고 일반의 $45.3{\pm}16.3$ 점이었으며 타과 전문의와 일반의사 간의 점수사이에 통계적으로 유의한 차이는 관찰되지 않았다. 각 질문 항목에는 모유 수유 권장 기간, 모유 수유 중에 무른 변을 보이는 경우, 모유 수유시에 나타나는 황달의 대처 요령, 이유식의 시작 시기, 시판 이유식을 먹이는 형태, 식물성 분유에 대한 지도 방침, 선식에 대한 지도 방침에 대한 질문에 대한 대답이 1군과 2군 사이에 유의한 차이를 보였다. 결 론 : 본 조사 결과 소아과 전문의들에 비해 타과 전문의들이나 일반의들은 영아기의 영양에 대해 부적절하게 상담하고 있음을 알 수 있었으며, 소아과 전문의들에 대한 지속적인 교육과 함께, 타과 전문의에 의한 부적절한 상담이 이루어지지 않도록 대처하는 방안을 강구해야 할 것으로 사료되었다.
