  • The purpose of the present study is to investigate the convective heat transfer characteristics and the validity of fin efficiency of the circular finned-tube heat exchanger by using commercial CFD code. The heat transfer coefficient obtained by using the laminar model was 22% overestimated to the experimental data. The fin surface temperature compared with the experimental data measured by the liquid crystal method. The fin efficiency by the present numerical experiment, defined as normalized and averaged fin surface temperature, was greater than the theoretical fin efficiency and the difference is increased at high value of the factor m.

  • Elasto-dynamic deformation of flexible linkage mechanism was analyzed using the finite element method. A computer program was constructed and applied to analyze a specific crank-level 4-bar mechanism, in which the elasto-dynamic deformation of the mechanism system was obtained using mode superposition method in the case of constant input speed and the effect of geometric stiffness on the mechanism is included. Experimental verification of numerical results was conducted by measuring the elasto-dynamic deformation of mid-points of coupler and lever for the 4-bar lingkage mechanism using high speed camera and image data processing systeem. For the elasto-dynamic deformation at the lever mid-point, the numerical results including geometric stiffness almost agree with the experimental ones. However, the numerical results excluding geometric stiffness good agree with the experimental ones at the couper mid-point.

  • In recent years there has been increased interest in the continuum model associated with the solidification of binary mixtures. A review of the literature, however, shows that the model verification was not sufficient or only qualitative. Present work is conducted for the reassessment of continuum model on the solidification problems of binary mixtures widely used for model validation. In spite of using the same continuum model, the results do not agree well with those of Incropera and co-workers which are benchmark problems typically used for validation of binary mixture solidification. Inferring from the agreement of present results with the analytic, experimental and other model's numerical results, this discrepancy seems to be caused by numerical errors in applying continuum model developed by Incropera and co-workers, not by the model itself. Careful examination should be preceded before selecting validation problems.

  • In the previous study, the inverse perturbation method was used to identify structural damages. Because all unmeasured DOFs were considered as unknown variables, considerable computational effort was required to obtain reliable results. Thus, in the present study, a system condensation method is used to transform the unmeasured DOFs into the measured DOFs, which eliminates the remaining unmeasured DOFs to improve computational efficiency. However, there may still arise a numerically ill-conditioned problem, if the system condensation is not adequate for numerical Programming or if the system condensation is not recalibrated with respect to the structural changes. This numerical problem is resolved in the present study by adopting more accurate accelerated improved reduced system (AIRS) as well as by updating the transformation matrix at every step. The criterion on the required accuracy of the condensation method is also proposed. Finally, numerical verification results of the present accelerated inverse perturbation method (AIPM) are presented.

  • The acoustic power is a major acoustical characteristic of an underwater vehicle and could be measured in a reverberant water tank. In order to obtain accurate measurement results, the acoustic field formed by the sound source should be investigated quantitatively in the reverberant water tank. In this research, the acoustic field of a reverberant water tank containing an underwater sound source has been analyzed by using an acoustic radiosity method one of the numerical analysis methods suitable for the acoustic analysis of the highly diffused space. The source level of the underwater sound source and acoustical properties of the water tank input to the numerical analysis have been estimated by applying the reverberant tank plot method through a preliminary experiment result. The comparison of the numerical analysis result with that of the experiment has verified the accuracy of the acoustic radiosity method.

  • This paper discusses on the dynamic responsed of an elastically restrained beam under a moving mass of constant velocity. Governing equations of motion taking into account of all inertia effects of the moving mass were derived by Galerkin's mode summation method, and Runge-Kutta integration method was applied to solve the differential equations. Numerical solutions for dynamic deflections of beams were obtained for the changes of the various parameters (spring stiffness, spring position, mass ratios and velocity ratios of the moving mass). In order to verify the numerical predictions for the dynamic response of the beam, experiments were conducted. Numerical solutions for the dynamic responses of the test beam have a good agreement with experimental ones.

  • In engine room, proper enclosure system is preferable for reducing noise level but the enclosure system in the engine room causes bad influence on cooling performance due to poor ventilation. Cooling efficiency of the enclosure system can be improved by varying fan speed and proper flow path for ventilation. In this study, numerical analysis is performed to assess cooling effect of the enclosure system using finite volume method. The RNG k-$\varepsilon$ model is adopted for turbulence model along with heat exchanger model and porous media model for heat exchanger analysis, and moving reference frame model for rotational fan. Verification result shows reasonable agreement with experimental data. Analysis results show direct effect of velocity and temperature distribution on cooling ability in the enclosure system. Enclosure system of case B shows high heat transfer coefficient and has the smallest area ratio of opened flow passages which is good for noise level reduction.

  • Contaminant transport in groundwater induces major threat and harmful effect on the environment; hence, the fate of the contaminant migration in groundwater is seeking a lot of attention. In this paper a two dimensional numerical flow and transport model through saturated layered soil is developed. Groundwater flow and solute transport has been simulated numerically using proposed model. The model implements the finite volume time splitting method to discretize the main equations. The performance, accuracy and efficiency of the out coming numerical models have been successfully examined by two test cases. The verification test cases consist of two-dimensional, groundwater flow and solute transport. The final purpose of this paper is to discuss and compare the shape of contaminant plume in homogeneous and heterogeneous media with different soil properties and control of solute transport using a zone for minimizing the potential of groundwater contamination; furthermore, this model leads to select the effective and optimum remedial strategies for cleaning the contaminated aquifers.
