  • This thesis is results of numerical analyses about test results of discharge capacity apparatus using penetration method. Applicability of numerical approach with FEM technique, using Cam-clay model, was confirmed by analyzing the results of standard consolidation test before analyzing test results of discharge capacity apparatus using penetration method. Thus, input parameters for the model was convinced to be appropriate. For numerical analyses about test results of discharge capacity apparatus using penetration method, identical initial and loading conditions during tests were applied to simulate test results correctly. Effects of ground disturbance resulted from installment of vertical drains on the behaviors of consolidation were also simulated. Applicability of numerical approach was investigated by comparing test results with numerical ones. As results of them, both of consolidation settlement were found to be in good agreements so that its applicability was confirmed. As results of numerical estimation, degree of consolidation with the condition of considering smear zone was found to be delayed, compared with results without smear zone. On the other hands, parametric numerical analyses of changing parameters related to smear zone such as permeability and size of smear zone and permeability of vertical drain were also carried out.

  • This is a leading study to replace the structural analysis methodology on the specific traditional joint by a numerical analysis. Tests were carried out to test the compressive methodologies with the numerical results. The Japanese larch was used as a sample. The Orthotropic property of wood was specifically considered for the finite element numerical analysis. Linear numerical analysis and non-linear numerical analysis for the BEAM element and the two SOLID elements of ANSYS were used to analyze the compressive performance. In addition, more finely divided elements were used to raise the accuracy of the numerical result. Finally, the statistically significant differences were tested between that of the analytical and numerical results. It could be concluded that the SOLID 64 element shows the most optimum result when the non-linear analysis with the more finely divided element was used. However, finely dividing of the element is a considerable time consuming process, and it is quite difficult to raise the accuracy of the non-linear numerical analysis. Therefore, if considering the vertical displacement to be of the only interest, the BEAM element is more efficient than the SOLID element because the BEAM element is reflected as a simple line, which is less time consuming and difficult in dividing the elements. But, the BEAM element cannot accurately model the knot as a strength defect factor which is an important property in the orthotropic property of wood. Therefore, the SOLID element should be used to model the strength defect factor, knot, as it can be efficiently applied on the structural size flexure member which could be more strongly effected by the knot. In addition, it is useful at times when the failure types of members are to be more closely investigated, as the SOLID element is able to examine the local stress distribution of the member. The conclusion drawn by this study is of the good concordance between analytical results and numerical results of compressive wood members, but how orthotropic properties should only be considered. The numerical analysis on the specific Korean traditional joints will be based on the current study results.

  • This research focused on analyzing and comparing between the results of hydraulic physical modeling and the results of numerical modeling of Grass Concrete which is newly developed in-situ block system. The physical model was built as a scale of 1:50 by Froude similitude measuring the water levels and the water velocities for before and after vegetation and the effects were analyzed after reviewing the results. In consequence, the water velocities were observed to decrease meanly 19.1%, and the water depth were determined to increase meanly 27.8% in case of the of design flood, $Q=200m^3/sec$. Moreover, the velocities were produced reduction effects of 27.2%, and the water levels were derived from addition effects of the highest 31.3% in case of the probability maximum flood(PMF), $Q=600m^3/sec$. To verifying the hydraulic physical modeling, the numerical modeling was conducted for a close examination of before and after vegetation. HEC-RAS model was for 1 dimensional numerical analysis and RMA-2 was for 2 dimensional numerical analysis. The results of the numerical simulation, under the condition of roughness coefficient calibration, shows similar results of the physical modeling. These satisfactory results show that the accomplished results of hydraulic modeling and the predicted results of numerical modeling corresponded reasonably each others.

  • Most of the previous works on numerical analysis of galloping of transmission lines are generally based on the quasisteady theory. However, some wind tunnel tests of the rectangular section or hangers of suspension bridges have shown that the galloping phenomenon has a strong unsteady characteristic and the test results are quite different from the quasi-steady calculation results. Therefore, it is necessary to check the applicability of the quasi-static theory in galloping analysis of the ice-covered transmission line. Although some limited unsteady simulation researches have been conducted on the variation of parameters such as aerodynamic damping, aerodynamic coefficients with wind speed or wind attack angle, there is a need to investigate the numerical simulation of unsteady galloping of two-dimensional iced transmission line with comparison to wind tunnel test results. In this paper, it is proposed to conduct a two dimensional (2-D) unsteady numerical analysis of ice-covered transmission line galloping. First, wind tunnel tests of a typical crescent-shapes iced conductor are conducted firstly to check the subsequent quasisteady and unsteady numerical analysis results. Then, a numerical simulation model consistent with the aeroelastic model in the wind tunnel test is established. The weak coupling methodology is used to consider the fluid-structure interaction in investigating a two-dimension numerical simulation of unsteady galloping of the iced conductor. First, the flow field is simulated to obtain the pressure and velocity distribution of the flow field. The fluid action on the iced conduct at the coupling interface is treated as an external load to the conductor. Then, the movement of the conduct is analyzed separately. The software ANSYS FLUENT is employed and redeveloped to numerically analyze the model responses based on fluid-structure interaction theory. The numerical simulation results of unsteady galloping of the iced conduct are compared with the measured responses of wind tunnel tests and the numerical results by the conventional quasi-steady theory, respectively.

  • PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to develop a method for improving the accuracy of analysis results obtained from a two-dimensional (2-D) numerical analysis model of continuously reinforced concrete pavement (CRCP). METHODS : The analysis results from the 2-D numerical model of CRCP are compared with those from more rigorous three-dimensional (3-D) models of CRCP, and the relationships between the results are recognized. In addition, the numerical analysis results are compared with the results obtained from field experiments. By performing these comparisons, the calibration factors used for the 2-D CRCP model are determined. RESULTS : The results from the comparisons between 2-D and 3-D CRCP analyses show that with the 2-D CRCP model, concrete stresses can be overestimated significantly, and crack widths can either be underestimated or overestimated by a slight margin depending on the assumption of plane stress or plane strain. The behaviors of crack width in field measurements are comparable to those obtained from the numerical model of CRCP. CONCLUSIONS : The accuracy of analysis results from the 2-D CRCP model can be improved significantly by applying calibration factors obtained from comparisons with 3-D analyses and field experiments.

  • The objective of this paper is to investigate the gravity effect on the shape characters of natural supercavity. A finite difference solver along with an implicit, dual time, preconditioned, three-dimensional algorithm has been used to solve the two-phase Navier Stokes equations. Numerical solutions were performed for natural supercavitating flow past a disk for different cavitation and Froud numbers. The numerical results were compared with corresponding analytical results in quantitative manner and it was found that the shape of supercavity was reasonably predicted Numerical results indicated that the gravity effect can induce the asymmetry of supercavity. The asymmetry was apparent when the froud number was smaller so that for constant cavitation number when we reduced the froud number the opt of the axis of supercavity increased. Moreover, for specific froud number a decrease in cavitation number resulted in an increase in the offset of the supercavity Numerical results revealed that for froud number greater than 25 the gravity effect is negligible.

  • The key parameter that affects the consolidation process of soil is the coefficient of permeability. The common assumption in the consolidation analysis is that the coefficient of permeability is porosity-dependent. However, various authors suggest that the strain-dependency of the coefficient of permeability should also be taken into account. In this paper, we present results of experimental and numerical analyses, with an aim to determine the strain-dependency of the coefficient of permeability. We present in detail both the experimental procedure and the finite element formulation of the two-dimensional axisymmetric numerical model of the oedometer test (standard and modified). We perform a set of experimental standard and modified oedometer tests. We use these experimental results to validate our numerical model and to define the model input parameter. Finally, by combining the experimental and numerical results, we propose the expression for the strain-dependent coefficient of permeability.

  • In this article, stability of composite conical shells subjected to dynamic external pressure is investigated by numerical and experimental methods. In experimental tests, cross-ply glass woven fabrics were selected for manufacturing of specimens. Hand-layup method was employed for fabricating the glass-epoxy composite shells. A test-setup that includes pressure vessel and data acquisition system was designed. Also, numerical analyses are performed. In these analyses, effect of actual geometrical imperfections of experimental specimens on the numerical results is investigated. For introducing the imperfections to the numerical models, linear eigen-value buckling analyses were employed. The buckling modes are multiplied by very small numbers that are derived from measurement of actual specimens. Finally, results are compared together while a good agreement between results of imperfect numerical analyses and experimental tests is observed.

  • A numerical procedure for the analysis of slender arch buckling problems for uniform dead weight is presented in this paper. Such loading changes in the arch profile. The problem is nonlinear. The numerical procedure is limited to an inextensible analysis and to elastic behavior. Based upon a numerical integration technique developed by Newmark for straight beams, a large deflection bending analysis is combined with small deflection buckling routines to formulate the numerical procedure. The numerical procedure is composed of a combination of the numerical integration and successive approximations procedure. The results obtained in this study are as follows : 1.The critical loads obtained in this study coincide with the results by Austin so that the algorithm developed in this study is verified. 2.The numerical results are converged with good precision when the half arch is divided into 10 segments in both Prime and Quadratic section. 3.The critical loads are decreased as the ratios of rise versus span are increased. 4.The critical loads are increased as the moments of inertia at the ends are increased. 5.The critical loads of Prime section are larger than that of Quadratic section under the same profile conditions.

  • An experimental and numerical study of a spray flow is performed to investigate the spray characteristics using an air-assisted atomizer. A Partical Dynamic Analyzer(PDA) is used to measure SMD, dmp velocity, and drop number density whose the initial conditions have considerable effect on the numerical results. The measured experimental data have been used to asses the accuracy of model predictions. Numerical investigation is made with the Eulerian - Lagrangian formulism. Turbulent dispersion effects using a Monte-Carlo method, turbulent modulation effect and entrainment of air are also numerically simulated. Results show that the numerical predictions of SSF(Stochastic Separated Flow) analysis yielded reasonable agreement with the experimental data. However, the model calculations for small drops produced the inconsistent numerical results due to the effect of surrounding air entrainment.
