In this study, a 3-dimensional numerical model, has been developed applied for the investigation of combustion characteristics, and used to optimize operating conditions in MSW incinerator, in Gwangju. The model developed in this study has been verified by exacting both the predicted and the measured temperature in combustion chamber which has been operated to provide a reference condition. By predictive results, the Sangmoo incinerator has a good characteristics of combustion and low emission however after burning zone produced incomplete products, also probably because the supply of primary air was not enough. Parametric screening studies have been conducted to study optimal operating conditions. For the optimal combustion characteristics, operating conditions should be adjusted with the waste properties.
This paper presents a numerical study of axially loaded concrete-filled steel tubular columns with "T" shaped cross section (CFTTS) based on the ABAQUS standard solver. Two types of columns with "T" shaped cross section, the common concrete-filled steel tubular columns with "T" shaped cross section (CCFTTS) and the double concrete-filled steel tubular columns with "T" shaped cross section (DCFTTS), are discussed. The failure modes, confining effects and load-displacement curves are analyzed. The numerical results indicate that both have the similar failure mode that the steel tubes are only outward buckling on all columns' faces. It is found that DCFTTS columns have higher axial capacities than CCFTTS ones duo to the steel tube of DCFTTS columns can plays more significant confining effect on concrete. A parametric study, including influence of tube thickness, concrete strength and friction coefficient of tube-concrete interface on the axial capacities is also carried out. Simplified formulae were also proposed based on this study.
Strengthening as well as correcting unsightly deflections of reinforced concrete (RC) beam may be accomplished by retrofitting. An innovative way to do this retrofitting that is proposed in this study utilizes turnbuckle to apply external post-tensioning. This Turnbuckle External Post-Tensioning (T-EPT) was experimentally proven to improve the serviceability and load carrying capacity of reinforced concrete beams. The T-EPT system comprises a braced steel frame and a turnbuckle mechanism to provide the prestressing force. To further develop the T-EPT, this research aims to develop a numerical scheme to analyze the structural performance of reinforced concrete beams with this kind of retrofitting. The fiber method analysis was used as the numerical scheme. The fiber method is a simplified finite element method that is used in this study to predict the elastic and inelastic behavior of a reinforced concrete beam. With this, parametric study was conducted so that the effective setup of doing the T-EPT retrofitting may be determined. Different T-EPT configurations were investigated and their effectiveness evaluated. Overall, the T-EPT was effective in improving the serviceability condition and load carrying capacity of reinforced concrete beam.
A thermal stratification may occur in the horizontal parts of the surge line during operating transients of the pressurizer, which produces relatively high fatigue usage factor. Heat-up transient is the most severe case among the transient conditions. In this study, to study the relationship between the magnitude of thermal stratification and the length of vertical part of the surge line, some parametric fluid-structure interaction (FSI) analyses with different length variables of the vertical part of the surge line were performed for plant heat-up transient condition by using 3-dimensional numerical analysis. The conservativeness of the traditional finite element model for thermal stratification analysis based on the conservative assumption in the surge line was also discussed by comparison of the results of 3-dimensional transient FSI analysis of this study. Stresses calculated with 3-dimensional transient model were considerably reduced comparing with the traditional analysis.
In some previous studies, the effect of the microcapillary hole structure in the front dielectric layer was introduced. There have not yet been any report, however, on the detailed study on the discharge characteristics of the hole type, and on the optimization of the microscale hole size. In this study, the discharge characteristics of the microscale hole types in the front dielectric layer in plasma display panels were investigated through plasma numerical simulation. The numerical analysis discussed in this work may shed more light on the discharge mechanism. The modification of the structure of microscale holes is expected to improve the driving voltage and luminance, which may have been due to more energetically charged particles and Xe-excited species, which may in turn have been due to an expanded sheath electric field in the vicinity of the microholes.

Permanent deformation plays a key role in performance based earthquake resistant design. In order to estimate permanent deformation after earthquake, it is essential to secure reliable response history analysis(RHA) as well as earthquake scenario. This study focuses on permanent deformation of an inverted T-type wall under earthquake. The study is composed of two separate parts. The first one is on the verification of RHA and the second one is on an effect of input earthquake motion. The former is discussed in this paper and the latter in the companion paper. The verification is conducted via geotechnical dynamic centrifuge test in prototype scale. Response of wall stem, ground motions behind the wall obtained from RHA matched pretty well with physical test performed under centrifugal acceleration of 50g. The rigorously verified RHA is used for parametric study to investigate an effect of input earthquake motion selection in the companion paper.

The objective of this study is to understand the behaviour of hollow core slabs strengthened with FRP and hybrid techniques through numerical and analytical studies. Different strengthening techniques considered in this study are (i) External Bonding (EB) of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) laminates, (ii) Near Surface Mounting (NSM) of CFRP laminates, (iii) Bonded Overlay (BO) using concrete layer, and (iv) hybrid strengthening which is a combination of bonded overlay and NSM or EB. In the numerical studies, three-dimensional Finite Element (FE) models of hollow core slabs were developed considering material and geometrical nonlinearities, and a phased nonlinear analysis was carried out. The analytical calculations were carried out using Response-2000 program which is based on Modified Compression Field Theory (MCFT). Both the numerical and analytical models predicted the behaviour in agreement with experimental results. Parametric studies indicated that increase in the bonded overlay thickness increases the peak load capacity without reducing the displacement ductility. The increase in FRP strengthening ratio increased the capacity but reduced the displacement ductility. The hybrid strengthening technique was found to increase the capacity of the hollow core slabs by more than 100% without compromise in ductility when compared to their individual strengthening schemes.

Numerical analysis using a three dimensional finite element program(ABAQUS) is a powerful method which can evaluate the soil-pile-structure interaction under the dynamic loading and reduce the computation time significantly, but has not be widely used because modeling a soil-pile system and setting the parameter for the entire model are difficult and a three dimensional finite element program is not user friendly. However, a three dimensional finite element program is expected to be widely used because of advance in research of modeling technique and development of the modeling and visualization. In this study, ABAQUS is used to simulate the 1g shaking table model pile test, and the numerical results are compared with the 1g shaking table test results. The application about the soil stiffness and boundary condition change is estimated and then parametric study for various input acceleration amplitudes, various input frequencies, and various surcharge is carried out.

In this paper, we study the propulsive behavior related to the flagellar motion of bacteria using a spring model. A commercial program was used to conduct simulations, and we verified the numerical technique by setting an additional rotating domain and conducting a parametric study. The numerical results are in good agreement with slender-body theory, although overall, they are not in agreement with resistive-force theory. We confirm the effect of the rotational velocity, pitch, helical radius, fluid viscosity, and, in particular, the distance from the wall on the propulsion of the spring.

This paper presents an evaluation of shear transfer across cracks in reinforced concrete through finite element modelling (FEM) and analytical predictions. The aggregate interlock is one of the mechanisms responsible for the shear transfer between two slip surfaces of a crack; the others are the dowel action, when the reinforcement contributes resisting a parcel of shear displacement (reinforcement), and the uncracked concrete comprised by the shear resistance until the development of the first crack. The aim of this study deals with the development of a 3D numerical model, which describes the behavior of Z-type push-off specimen, in order to determine the properties of interface subjected to direct shear in terms cohesion and friction angle. The numerical model was validated based on experimental data and a parametric study was performed with the variation of the concrete strength. The numerical results were compared with analytical predictions and a new equation was proposed to predict the maximum shear stress in cracked concrete.
