This paper reports the numerical investigation conducted to study the influence of Local-Distortional (L-D) interaction mode buckling on post buckling strength erosion in fixed ended lipped channel cold formed steel columns. This investigation comprises of 81 column sections with various geometries and yield stresses that are carefully chosen to cover wide range of strength related parametric ratios like (i) distortional to local critical buckling stress ratio ($0.91{\leq}F_{CRD}/F_{CRL}{\leq}4.05$) (ii) non dimensional local slenderness ratio ($0.88{\leq}{\lambda}_L{\leq}3.54$) (iii) non-dimensional distortional slenderness ratio ($0.68{\leq}{\lambda}_D{\leq}3.23$) and (iv) yield to non-critical buckling stress ratio (0.45 to 10.4). The numerical investigation is carried out by conducting linear and non-linear shell finite element analysis (SFEA) using ABAQUS software. The non-linear SFEA includes both geometry and material non-linearity. The numerical results obtained are deeply analysed to understand the post buckling mechanics, failure modes and ultimate strength that are influenced by L-D interaction with respect to strength related parametric ratios. The ultimate strength data obtained from numerical analysis are compared with (i) the experimental tests data concerning L-D interaction mode buckling reported by other researchers (ii) column strength predicted by Direct Strength Method (DSM) column strength curves for local and distortional buckling specified in AISI S-100 (iii) strength predicted by available DSM based approaches that includes L-D interaction mode failure. The role of flange width to web depth ratio on post buckling strength erosion is reported. Then the paper concludes with merits and limitations of codified DSM and available DSM based approaches on accurate failure strength prediction.

This paper addresses vibration comfort evaluation on suspension bridge subjected to moving vehicles. The moving load method is commonly employed for the analysis, even though it is less accurate than the moving mass approach which considers vehicle-bridge interaction effects and roughness of the pavement. In this study, a parametric study on modeling method by means of the moving load technique, such as the number of modes included in the analysis, types of moving loads, and length of the stiffening girder, is carried out. The numerical result indicated that use of the triangular pulse load may result in significant overestimation on vibration discomfortness.
In present study, a parametric study of a centrifugal compressor with inlet treatment has been performed numerically using three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. The shear stress transport turbulence model was used for analysis of turbulence. The finite volume method and unstructured grid system were used for the numerical solution. Tested parameters were related to the geometry of the inlet duct. It was found that the application of circumferentially distributed holes in the inlet duct improves operational stability of the compressor compared to that with conventional inlet duct.
This paper presents parametric study of long-rod penetration. Influences of yield stress of penetrator and target material on the penetration results such as crater size and penetrator residual length are contemplated. Numerical experiments are carried out with varying the value of static yield stress of materials. Lagrangian explicit code NET2D was used to perform parametric study. Element eroding algorithm was used to properly simulate long-rod penetration. Analytic and empirical model of long-rod penetration and Taylor test are used to explain the relationships of parameter and simulation results.
The lateral stability of curved continuous welded rail (CWR) is studied fur buckling prevention. This study includes the influences of vehicle induced loads on the thermal buckling behavior of straight and curved CWR tracks. quasi-static loads model is assumed to determine the uplift region, which occurs due to the vertical track deformation induced by wheel loads of vehicle. Parametric numerical analyses are performed to calculate the upper and lower critical buckling temperatures of CWR tracks. The parameters include track lateral resistance, track curvature, longitudinal stiffness, tie-ballast friction coefficient, axle load, truck center spacing, and the ratio of lateral to vertical vehicle load. This study provides a guideline for the improvement or stability for dynamic buckling in on tracks.
This study investigates the eccentric performance of concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) stub columns strengthened with steel tube and sandwiched concrete (STSC) jackets. It was revealed that the STSC jacketing method effectively weakened the cracking of concrete in CFST columns on the convex side and the crash on the concave side. Substantial increases in the eccentric bearing capacities were demonstrated after strengthening. A numerical study was further conducted. The decrease in diameter-to-thickness ratio and increase in strength of outer tube contributed to increase in peak load of all components, whereas the increase in sandwiched concrete strength resulted in load increase on itself and had negligible effects on other components. The parametric study showed the effect of inner concrete strength on columns' bearing capacity was magnified after strengthening, whereas that of inner tube thickness was reduced. Within the parameters investigated, high-strength concrete and high-strength steel can be applied without the concern of early abrupt failure of inner low-strength concrete or steel tube.

In this study, numerical investigation has been performed on the impingement, spreading and solidification of a coating material droplet impacting onto a solid substrate in the thermal spray process. The numerical model is validated through the comparison of the present numerical result with experimental data fer the flat substrate without surface defects. An analysis of deposition formation on the non-polished substrate with surface defects is also performed. The parametric study is conducted with various surface defect sizes and shapes to examine the effect of surface defects on the impact and solidification of the liquid droplet on the substrate.

A three-dimensional numerical calculation has been performed to investigate mixed convective vortex flow in rectangular channels(width/height=4) with the upper part cooled and the lower part heated uniformly. In this study, the Prandtl number was 909, the Reynolds number was varied from 0 to $9.6{\times}10^{-2}$ and the Rayleigh number from $10^3$ to $5{\times}10^4$. The governing equations were discretized using the finite volume method. From a parametric study, velocity and temperature distributions were obtained and discussed. It is found that vortex flow of mixed convection in rectangular channels can be classified into three flow patterns which depend on Reynolds and Rayleigh numbers, and the regular vortex structure disappears around Rayleigh number $5{\times}10^4$.

One dimensional numerical modeling was carried out for the melting behavior of dry snow and the unsaturated flow when heat was supplied from the bottom surface. Discrepancy between the previous experimental data and the present numerical results is substantially reduced by considering the density change of water permeation layer due to the infiltration of meltwater. In the parametric study for effective thermal conductivity, it was found that the effect of this parameter to the behavior of snow melting is minor. Sensitivity analysis showed that the melting time is most sensitive to changes in supplied heat flux, snow temperature, and bulk density, whereas snow bulk density and residual saturation have a significant effect on the height of water permeation layer in snow.
The present study investigates the lateral torsional buckling behaviour of pultruded glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) simply supported channel beams subjected to uniform bending about their major axis. A parametric study by varying the sectional geometry and span of channel beams is carried out by using ABAQUS software. The accuracy of the FE models was ensured by verifying them against the available results provided in the literature. The effect of geometric nonlinearity, geometric imperfections, and the dependency of finite element mesh on the lateral torsional buckling were carefully considered in the FE model. Lateral torsional buckling (LTB) strengths obtained from the numerical study were compared with the theoretical LTB strengths obtained based on the Eurocode 3 approach for steel sections. The comparison between the numerical strengths and the design procedure proposed in the literature based on Eurocode 3 approach revealed disagreements. Therefore, a simplified improved design procedure is proposed for the safe design strength prediction of pultruded GFRP channel beams. The proposed equation has been provided that might aid the structural engineers in economically designing the pultruded GFRP channel beams in the future.
