Two-phase compressible flow fields of air-water are investigated numerically in the fixed Eulerian grid framework. The phase interface is captured via volume fractions of each phase. A way to model two phase compressible flows as a single phase one is found based on an equivalent equation of states of Tait's type for a multiphase cell. The equivalent single phase field is discretized using the Roe‘s approximate Riemann solver. Two approaches are tried to suppress the pressure oscillation phenomena at the phase interface, a passive advection of volume fraction and a direct pressure relaxation with the compressible form of volume fraction equation. The direct pressure equalizing method suppresses pressure oscillation successfully and generates sharp discontinuities, transmitting and reflecting acoustic waves naturally at the phase interface. In discretizing the compressible form of volume fraction equation, phase interfaces are geometrically reconstructed to minimize the numerical diffusion of volume fraction and relevant variables. The motion of a projectile in a water-filled tube which is fired by the release of highly pressurized air is simulated presuming the flow field as a two dimensional one, and several design factors affecting the projectile movement are investigated.

This paper presents a numerical simulation study of the transient behavior of a $2{\times}340MW$ pump-turbine power plant, where the results show an unstable behavior at runaway. First, the modeling of hydraulic components based on equivalent schemes is presented. Then, the 2 pump-turbine test case is presented. The transient behavior of the power plant is simulated for a case of emergency shutdown with servomotor failure on Unit 1. Unstable operation at runaway with a period of 15 seconds is properly simulated using a 1-dimensional approach. The simulation results points out a switch after 200 seconds of the unstable behavior between a period of oscillations initially of 15 seconds to a period of oscillation of 2.16 seconds corresponding to the hydraulic circuit first natural period. The pressure fluctuations related to both the rigid and elastic water column mode are presented for oscillation mode characterization. This phenomenon is described as a switch between a rigid and an elastic water column oscillation mode. The influence of the rotating inertia on the switch phenomenon is investigated through a parametric study.
In high-speed gas-levitation applications a high compressibility number may bring a numerical difficulty in predicting generated pressure profiles accurately as it causes erroneous sudden pressure overshoot and oscillation in the trailing-edge. To treat the problem, in this study an exact exponential high-order shape function is introduced in the FE lubrication analyses. It is shown by various example applications that the high-order shape function scheme can successfully subdue undesired pressure overshoot and oscillation.
We consider the common and different results between the oscillation of galloping cable and the oscillation of suspension bridge cable through the long-term behavior. Numerical results are presented by using the second-order Runge-Kutta method under various initial conditions. There appeared to be nonlinear forms. Periodicity, symmetry, and longitudinality are differently appeared in two kinds of cables.
The M-AUSMPW+ scheme that can capture shock waves exactly with monotonic characteristics is modifided from AUSMPW+ by analyzing the cause of oscillation in shock regions. Firstly shock-capturing characteristics of general FVS including the AUSM-type schemes are investigated in detail, according to the difference between a cell-interface and a sonic transition position. The cause of oscillation is the improper numerical dissipation that could not represent the real Physics. The M-AUSMPW+ could capture shocks exactly without oscillatory behaviors in considering the sonic transition position and an cell-interface position.
A new moving boundary technique for leap-frog finite difference numerical mode is proposed for the resonable simulation of coastal inundation over discontinuous topography. The new scheme improves the moving boundary technique developed by Imamura(1996). The present scheme is tested using the analytical solution of Thacker(1981) for the case of free oscillation with moving boundary in a parabolic bowl. Finally, a numerical simulation is conducted for the flooding over a tidal barrier constructed on a simple concave geometry. A general feature of inundation over a discontinuous topography is well described by the numerical model.

A numerical analysis was conducted to investigate the inlet buzz and combustion oscillation in an axisymmetric ramjet engine with wedge-type flame holders. The physical model of concern includes the entire engine flow path, extending from the leading edge of the inlet center-body through the exhaust nozzle. The theoretical formulation is based on the Farve-averaged conservation equations of mass, momentum, energy, and species concentration, and accommodates finite-rate chemical kinetics and variable thermo-physical properties. Turbulence closure is achieved using a combined scheme comprising of a low-Reynolds number k-${\varepsilon}$ two-equation model and Sarkar's compressible turbulence model. Detailed flow phenomena such as inlet flow aerodynamics, flame evolution, and acoustic excitation as well as their interactions, are investigated. Mechanisms responsible for driving the inlet buzz are identified and quantified for the engine operating at subcritical conditions.
A numerical analysis is performed using two dimensional axisymmetric RANS (Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes) equations system on the transition sequence of the Integrated Rocket Ramjet and the unsteady reacting flow-field in a ramjet combustor during unstable combustion. The mode transition of an axisymmetric ramjet is numerically simulated starting from the initial condition of the boost end phase of the entire ramjet. The unsteady reacting flow-field within combustor is computed for varying injection area. In calculation results of the transition, the terminal normal shock is occurred at the downstream of diffuser throat section and no notable combustor pressure oscillation is observed after certain time of the inlet port cover open. For the case of a small injection area at the same equivalence ratio, periodic pressure oscillation in the combustor leads to the terminal shock expulsion from the inlet and hence the buzz instability occurred.
In this paper, we show the numerical and experimental results of two-dimensional fluid motions inside a rectangular container with a vertical plate subjected to a background rotation added by a rotational oscillation. In the PIV experiment we apply a new algorithm, NTSS, to the velocity calculation. In the numerical computation, the linear Ekman-pumping model was used to take the bottom friction effect into account. It was found that it showed good agreement with the experimental results at low ${\epsilon}$ number.
Present study simulates oscillatory supersonic impinging jet flows using the axisymmetric Navier-Stokes code. To capture the salient features of flow oscillation and overcome the divergence during the initial transient period, several tests have been conducted for the grid and time step sizes. The results also show that the effects of the inlet flow condition at the nozzle exit and turbulence on the oscillatory behavior of supersonic impinging jets are negligible. Frequencies of the surface pressure oscillation obtained by the selected numerical method are in good accord with the measured impinging tones for various cases of nozzle-to-plate distance. Two seemingly different staging behaviors with nozzle-to-plate distance and nozzle pressure variations are found to correlate well if the frequency and distance are normalized by the length of the first shock cell.
