In many dynamic systems, unwanted vibrations which may arise during operation of machines are costly in terms of reduction of performance and service life. Sometimes these risky oscillations endanger equipment and personnel. When hydraulic telescopic booms taken large mass are driven at slow speeds between the two pads, unstable oscillations occur through the stick-slip at the sliding parts and become more severe and saw-toothed. This paper supposes few models for the telescopic boom in the multi-degree of freedom system, and attempts a theoretical approach for the numerical analysis in its stick-slip condition, It was verified that this theoretical approach has an effect on estimate of stick-slip in the one-degree as well as multi-degree of freedom system.
In this study, we investigate the discontinuous-derivative treatment at the gas-liquid interface in underwater explosion (UNDEX) problems by using the Moving Least Squares-Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (MLS-SPH) method, which is known as one of the particle methods suitable for problems where large deformation and inhomogeneity occur in the whole domain. Because the numerical oscillation of pressure arises from derivative discontinuity in the UNDEX analysis using the standard SPH method, the MLS shape function with Discontinuous-derivative Basis Function (DBF) that is able to represent the derivative discontinuity of field function is utilized in the MLS-SPH formulation in order to suppress the nonphysical pressure oscillation. The effectiveness of the MLS-SPH with DBF is demonstrated in comparison with the standard SPH and conventional MLS-SPH though a shock tube problem and benchmark standard problems of UNDEX of a trinitrotoluene (TNT) charge.
In this paper, the flow past a rotary oscillating circular cylinder is simulated. The high-order and high-resolution numerical schemes with the characteristic boundary conditions are used for the compressible Navier-Stokes equation. The frequencies of rotating oscillation are $0.19\;{\leq}\;S_f\;{\leq}\;0.25$ for the maximum angular $\theta_{max}=10^{\circ}$ and $17^{\circ}$. The flow conditions are Mach number of 0.3 and Reynolds number of 1000. At Lock-on and Non-lock-on region which are defined by the relation between the vortex shedding frequency and the oscillating frequency, the drag and lift coefficient are analyzed.
Tribology, in other words, interacting surfaces in relative motion, is essential in life. The relative motion on surfaces may cause some problems with heat, vibration, noise, and so on. Unwanted vibrations by friction, which may arise during the operation of machines, are costly in terms of reduction of performance and service life. All these phenomena inolve stick-slip. The telescopic boom operations involves stick-slip oscillations like slideways. Unwanted stick-slip oscillations on telescopic boom operations cannot achieve smooth sliding and many developers of that machine makes a lot of effort to remove or reduce it. So this paper presents stick-slip oscillation with pressure of the hydraulic cylinder which drives booms, and attempts a theoretical approach for the numerical analysis for its stick-slip condition.

The solution of the interface problem or Poisson problem with concave corner has singular perturbation at the interface corners or singular corners. The decoupled dual singular function method (DDSFM) which exploits the singular representations of the solutions was suggested in [3, 9] and estimated optimal accuracy in [10]. The convergence rates consist with theoretical results even for the problems with very strong singularity, with the efficiency depending on parameters used in the methods. Furthermore the errors in $L^2$ and $L^\infty$-spaces display some oscillation, in the cases with meshsize not small enough. In this paper, we present an answer to remove the oscillation via numerical experiments. We observe the effects of parameters in DDSFM, and show the consisting efficiency of the method over the strong singularity.

Wind induced large bending oscillation amplitudes in tall and slender telecommunication steel towers may lead to precocious fatigue cracks and consequent risk of collapse of these structures, many of them installed in rural areas alongside highways and in highly populated urban areas. Varying stress amplitudes at hot spots may be attenuated by means of passive control mechanical devices installed in the tower. This paper gives an account of both mathematical-numerical model and the technique applied to design and evaluate the performance of a double controller installed in existing towers which is composed by a nonlinear pendulum and a novel type of passive controller described herein as a planar motion disk mounted on shear springs. Results of experimental measurements carried out on two slender tubular steel towers under wind action demonstrate the efficiency of the double controllers in attenuating the towers bending oscillation amplitudes and consequent stress amplitudes extending the towers fatigue life.
The objective of this study was to develop a simple and efficient numerical modeling technique for dynamic crack propagation using the finite element method. The study focused on the analysis of a rapidly propagation crack in an elastic body. As already known, discrete crack tip advance with the stationary node procedure results in spurious oscillation in the calculated energy terms. To reduce the spurious oscillation, a simple and efficient moving node procedure is proposed. The procedure does require neither remeshing the discretization nor distorting the original mesh. Two different central difference schemes are also evaluated and compared for dynamic crack propagation problem.
An accurate estimation of water level variation when thewaves propagate to the coastal regionis very important for the port and harbor development plan. This study describes the application of a hybrid element model to harbor oscillation problem due to the construction of shore structure and implementation of shore boundary. The site selected is Pusan Harbor area with the third development and the Artificial Island plan. The observed water level changes at the site are compared with the result of the numerical experiment. The model gives a very important prediction of water level changes for navigation and harbor design.
A high-order spectral/boundary-element method is newly adapted as an efficient numerical tool. In this method, the velocity potential is expressed as the sum of surface potential and body potential. Then, surface potential is solved fly using the high-order spectral method and body potential is solved fly using the high-order boundary element method. Through the combination of these two methods, the wave-making problems fly a submerged sphere moving with the large amplitude oscillation are solved in time-domain. With the example calculations, nonlinear effects on free-surface profiles and hydrodynamic forces are shown and discussed.
