  • This paper presents a practical and realistic Life-Cycle Cost (LCC) optimum design methodology for steel bridges considering the long-term effect of environmental stressors such as corrosion and heavy truck traffics on bridge reliability. The LCC functions considered in the LCC optimization consist of initial cost, expected life-cycle maintenance cost, and expected life-cycle rehabilitation costs including repair/replacement costs, loss of contents or fatality and injury losses, road user costs, and indirect socio-economic losses. For the assessment of the life-cycle rehabilitation costs, the annual probability of failure, which depends upon the prior and updated load and resistance histories, should be accounted for. For the purpose, Nowak live load model and a modified corrosion propagation model, which takes into consideration corrosion initiation, corrosion rate, and repainting effect, are adopted in this study. The proposed methodology is applied to the LCC optimum design problem of an actual steel box girder bridge with 3 continuous spans (40m+50m+40m=130m). Various sensitivity analyses are performed to investigate the effects of various design parameters and conditions on the LCC-effectiveness. From the numerical investigation, it has been observed that local corrosion environments and the volume of truck traffic significantly influence the LCC-effective optimum design of steel bridges. Thus, these conditions should be considered as crucial parameters for the optimum LCC-effective design.

  • The use of high dose rate remote afterloading system for the treatment of intraluminal lesions necessitates the need for a more accurate of dose distributions around the high intensity brachytherapy sources, doses are often prescribed to a distance of few centimeters from the linear source, and in this range the dose distribution is very difficult to assess. Accurated and optimized dose calculation with stable numerical algorithms by PC level computer was required to treatment intraluminal lesions by high dose rate brachytherapy system. The exposure rate from sources was calculated with Sievert integral and dose rate in tissue was calculated with Meisberger equation, An algorithm for generating a treatment plan with optimized dose distribution was developed for high dose rate intraluminal radiotherapy. The treatment volume becomes the locus of the constrained target surface points that is the specified radial distance from the source dwelling positions. The treatment target volume may be alternately outlined on an x-ray film of the implant dummy sources. The routine used a linear programming formulism to compute which dwell time at each position to irradiate the constrained dose rate at the target surface points while minimizing the total volume integrated dose to the patient. The exposure rate and the dose distribution to be confirmed the result of calculation with algorithm were measured with film dosimetry, TLD and small size ion chambers.

  • This paper presents a continuum-based shape design sensitivity analysis(DSA) method for crack propagation problems using a reproducing kernel method(RKM), which facilitates the remeshing problem required for finite element analysis(FEA) and provides the higher order shape functions by increasing the continuity of the kernel functions. A linear elasticity is considered to obtain the required stress field around the crack tip for the evaluation of J-integral. The sensitivity of displacement field and stress intensity factor(SIF) with respect to shape design variables are derived using a material derivative approach. For efficient computation of design sensitivity, an adjoint variable method is employed tather than the direct differentiation method. Through numerical examples, The mesh-free and the DSA methods show excellent agreement with finite difference results. The DSA results are further extended to a shape optimization of crack propagation problems to control the propagation path.

  • Long-term high-resolution hydro-meteorological data has been recognized as an essential element in establishing the water resources plan. The increasing demand for spatial precipitation in various areas such as climate, hydrology, geography, ecology, and environment is apparent. However, potential limitations of the existing area-weighted and numerical interpolation methods for interpolating precipitation in high altitude areas remains less explored. The proposed PRISM (Precipitation-Elevation Regressions on Independent Slopes Model) model can produce gridded precipitation that can adequately consider topographic characteristics (e.g., slope and altitude), which are not substantially included in the existing interpolation techniques. In this study, the PRISM model was optimized with SCEM-UA (Shuffled Complex Evolution Metropolis-University of Arizona) to produce daily gridded precipitation. As a result, the minimum impact radius was calculated 9.10 km and the maximum 34.99 km. The altitude of coastal weighted was 681.03 m, the minimum and maximum distances from coastal were 9.85 km and 38.05 km. The distance weighting factor was calculated to be about 0.87, confirming that the PRISM result was very sensitive to distance. The results showed that the proposed PRISM model could reproduce the observed statistical properties reasonably well.

  • The aims of this study were to determine the optimal mixing condition for two different amounts of Gynura procumbens powder and olive oil for the preparation of beef sausage. The experiments were designed according to the central composite design of response surface methodology, which showed 10 experimental points including two replicates of Gynura procumbens powder and olive oil. The physicochemical and mechanical characteristics as well as the sensory properties were measured, and these values were applied to the mathematical optimization models. The results of the physiochemical and mechanical analysis of each sample, including chewiness, cohesiveness, color a, color b, moisture content, salinity and heating loss showed significant differences. The sensory measurements were significantly different in color, flavor, tenderness, texture and overall quality. The optimum formulation, which was calculated using the numerical and graphical method, was determined to be 2.1 g Gynura procumbens powder and 7.06 g of olive oil.

  • Germinated brown rice is a useful material that contains natural nutrients and biologically active substances. This study was conducted to develop a optimal composite recipe for functional germinated brown rice cookie with added spinach (spinacia oleracea L) powder and with high preference in all age groups. The experimental design utilized herein was based on the Central composite design methodology of response surface, which included 16 experimental points, including 2 replicates for spinach, sugar, and butter. The physical, mechanical, and sensory properties of the test were measured, and these values were applied to the mathematical models. A canonical form and perturbation plot showed the influence of each ingredient on the mixed final product. The results of spread ratio decreased significantly with increases in spinach powder, sugar, and butter(p<0.01). L value shows that lightness decreased significantly with an increase in sugar(p<0.05), but the a and b values were not significant. Sensory evaluation found significant values for color(p<0.05), flavor(p<0.05), texture(p<0.05) and overall quality(p<0.05) in the predicted model. The optimum formulation by the numerical and graphical methods was calculated as follows: spinach powder 3 g, sugar 35.5 g butter 54.4 g.

  • This paper introduces a safer and more power efficient heater by using induction heating, to apply to the semiconductor wafer fabrication exhaust gas cleaning system. The exhaust gas cleaning system is currently made with filament heater that generates an endothermic reaction of N2 gas for the removal of moisture. Induction theory, through the bases of theoretical optimization and electronic implementation, is applied in the design of the induction heater specifically for the semiconductor wafer exhaust system. The new induction heating design provides a solution to the issues with the current energy inefficient, unreliable, and unsafe design. A robust and calibrated design of the induction heater is used to optimize the energy consumption. Optimization is based on the calibrated ZVS induction circuit design specified by the resonant frequency of the exhaust pipe. The fail-safe energy limiter embedded in the system uses a voltage regulator through the feedback of the MOSFET control, which allows the system performance to operate within the specification of the N2 Heater unit. A specification and performance comparison from current conventional filament heater is made with the calibrated induction heater design for numerical analysis and the proof of a better design.

  • Tortillas were prepared using rice and wheat flour. The experimental design incorporated thee independent variables(rice, wheat flour and moisture content) producing 14 samples of different proportions of each variable for each tortilla. The following were analysed using Design Expert 6 to unveil the influences of these variables on tensile strength and color(L, a, b). Results indicated that tensile strength increased with increasing rice and wheat flour content, however, decreased with increasing moisture content. Lighteness(L), of the tortilla increased with increased rice content whereas yellowness(b) increased with increased wheat flour content. The model suggests that tensile strength and color(L, a, b) in tortillas are highly correlated(SD Comment - give correlation coefficient and p-value). As well, the numerical optimization method suggests that the ratio of wheat flour to rice flour to moisture content which maximizes the three responses(tensile strenth, L and b) is 18.26 : 33.92 : 39.24%, 28.15 : 25.77 : 37.50%.

  • Optimal design method of nonlinear damping system for seismic response control of adjacent structures is studied in this paper. The objective functions of the optimal design are defined by structural response and total amount of the dampers. In order to obtain a solution minimizing two mutually conflicting objective functions simultaneously, multi-objective optimization technique based on genetic algorithm is adopted. In addition, stochastic linearization method is embedded into the multi-objective framework to efficiently estimate the seismic responses of the adjacent structures interconnected by nonlinear hysteretic dampers without performing nonlinear time-history analyses. As a numerical example to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed technique, 20-story and 10-story buildings are considered and MR dampers of which hysteretic behaviors vary with the magnitude of the input voltage are considered as nonlinear hysteretic damper interconnecting two adjacent buildings. The proposed approach can provide the optimal number and capacities of the MR dampers, which turned out to be more economical than the uniform distribution system while maintaining similar control performance. The proposed damper system is verified to show more stable performance in terms of the pounding probability between two adjacent buildings. The applicability of the proposed method to the design problem for optimally placing semi-active control system is examined as well.

  • The purpose of this study is related to automatic hull-form design for ships operating at two speeds. Research was conducted using a series 60 ($C_B=0.6$) ship as a target, which has the most basic ship hull-form. Hull-form development was pursued from the viewpoint of improving resistance performance. In particular, automatic hull-form design for a ship was performed to improve wave resistance, which is closely related to hull-forms. For this purpose, we developed automatic hull-form design software for ships by combining an optimization technique, resistance prediction technique and hull-form modification technique, appling the software developed to a target ship. A sequential quadratic programming method was used for optimization, and a potential-based panel method was used to predict resistance performance. A Gaussian-type modification function was developed and applied to change the ship hull-form. The software developed was used to design a target ship operating at two different speeds, and the performance of the resulting optimized hull was compared with the results of the original hull. In order to verify the validity of the program developed, experimental results obtained in model tests were compared with calculated values by numerical analysis.
