Natural convection heat transfer in a horizontal annulus from an inner tube with two vertical fins has been studied for the effects of dimensionless fin length and Rayleigh number. The maximum local Nusselt number of inner tube was obtained at .theta. = 145.deg. and that of outer cylinder at .theta. = 0.deg. for the case of $l_{F}$=0.3 Local Nusselt number distributions for the lower fins show higher values than that of the upper fins. The mean Nusselt number of inner tube was increased with the values of dimensionless fin length. The mean Nusselt number can be represented in an exponential function of Grashof number at various fin lengths. As compared with experimental and numerical results, isotherms and local Nusselt number show good agreement.t.

An experimental study has been performed on the heat transfer by the natural convection from a conducting tube with two axial fins to a surrounding cylinder. In case of vertical fins, the maximum local Nusselt number of conducting tube appears at ${\theta}{\fallingdotseq}145^{\circ}$ and that of outer cylinder appears at ${\theta}=0^{\circ}$, for $l_F=0.3$. In case of horizontal fins, the maximum local Nusselt number of conducting tube appears at ${\theta}=180^{\circ}$ and that of outer cylinder appears at ${\theta}=0^{\circ}$. The local Nusselt number of the upper fin and the downward fin shows negative values for $l_F=1.0$. The local Nusselt number of the lower fin and the downward fin shows higher values than that of the upper fin and the upward fin. The mean Nusselt number of conducting tube in case of vertical fins are increased in order of $l_F=0.6$, 0.3, 1.0 and 0.0, but in case of horizontal fins, in order of $l_F=1.0$, 0.6, 0.3, and 0.0. The mean Nusselt number of outer cylinder in case of vertical fins are increased in order of $l_F=1.0$, 0.0, 0.3 and 0.6, but in case of horizontal fins, in order of $l_F=0.6$, 1.0, 0.3, and 0.0.
A two-dimensional laminar flow through a channel with a pair of symmetric vertical fins is investigated. At far up- and down-stream from the fins, the plane Poiseuille flow exists in the channel. The Stokes flow for this channel is first investigated analytically and then the other laminar flows by numerical method. For analytic method, the method of eigen function expansion and collocation method are employed. In numerical solution for laminar flows, finite difference method(FDM) is used to obtain vorticity and stream function. From the results, the streamline patterns are shown and the additional pressure drop due to the attached fins and the force exerted on the fin are calculated. It is clear that the force depends on the length of fins and Reynolds number. When the Reynolds number exceeds a critical value, the flow becomes asymmetric. This critical Reynolds number Re/sub c/ depends on the length of the fins.
An experimental study is performed to investigate the characteristics of near wake flow behind a circular cylinder with serrated fins using a constant temperature anemometer and flow visualization. Various vortex shedding modes are observed. Fin height and pitch are closely related to the vortex shedding frequency after a certain transient Reynolds number. The through velocity across the fins decreases with increasing fin height and decreasing fin pitch. Vortex shedding is affected strongly by the velocity distribution just on top of the finned tube. The weaker gradient of velocity distribution is shown as increasing the freestream velocity and the fin height, while decreasing the fin pitch. The weaker velocity gradient delays the entrainment flow and weakens its strength. As a result of this phenomenon, vortex shedding is decreased. The effective diameter is defined as a virtual circular cylinder diameter taking into account the volume of fins, while the hydraulic diameter is proposed to cover the effect of friction by the fin surfaces. The Strouhal number based upon the effective diameters seems to correlate well with that of a circular cylinder without fins. After a certain transient Reynolds number, the trend of the Strouhal number can be estimated by checking the ratio of effective diameter to inner diameter. The normalized velocity and turbulent intensity distributions with the hydraulic diameter exhibit the best correlation with the circular cylinder's data.
Two-dimensional Stokes flows through a micro channel with a couple of symmetric vertical fins are investigated. At far up- and down-stream from the fins, the plane Poiseuille flow exists in the channel. The slip boundary conditions are applied to take account of the Knudsen number effects. For the analysis, the method of eigen function expansion and collocation method are employed. By the results, the streamline patterns and pressure distributions are shown and the force exerted on the fin and the excess pressure drop due to the fins are determined as functions of the length of the fin and Knudsen number. It may be conjectured that the force and the excess pressure drop are almost independent of the Knudsen number.
This computational study examines the augmentation of classic 2-D Rayleigh-$B{\acute{e}}nard$ convection by the addition of periodically-spaced transverse fins. The fins are attached to the heated base of the cavity and serve to partition the cavity into 'units' with different aspect ratios. The respective impacts upon heat transfer of the fin configuration parameters - including spacing, height, thickness and thermal conductivity - are systematically examined through numerical simulations for a range of laminar Rayleigh numbers (0 < Ra < $2{\times}10^5$) and reported in terms of an average Nusselt number. The selection of the low Rayleigh number regime is linked to likely scenarios within aerospace applications (e.g. avionics cooling) where the cavity length scale and/or gravitational acceleration is small. The net heat transfer augmentation is found to result from a combination of competing fin effects, most of which are hydrodynamic in nature. Heat transfer enhancement of up to $1.2{\times}$ that for a Rayleigh-$B{\acute{e}}nard$ cavity without fins was found to occur under favorable fin configurations. Such configurations are generally characterized by short, thin fins with half-spacings somewhat less than the convection cell diameter from classic Rayleigh-$B{\acute{e}}nard$ theory. In contrast, for unfavorable configurations, it is found that the introduction of fins can result in a significant reduction in the heat transfer performance.

In order to find better performance of heat sink, in this research, different cases were analysed by changing number of slots and shape of fins. Round shape fins which have wide surface showed 24% better heat transfer rate than vertical fins. There were not big discrepancies between 1 slot and 2 slots fins. Consequently, for better performance of heat sink, developments for widening surface and better material for high heat transfer rate are needed.

Heat loss and fin efficiency of symmetric and asymmetric trapezoidal fins with variable slope of fin's top surface are obtained by using a two-dimensional analytic method. Shapes of symmetric and asymmetric fins are changed from rectangular through trapezoidal to triangular by adjusting the fin shape factor. The ratio of symmetric trapezoidal fin length to asymmetric trapezoidal fin length is presented as a function of fin base height and convection characteristic number. The ratio of symmetric trapezoidal fin efficiency to asymmetric trapezoidal fin efficiency is presented as a function of the fin base height and fin shape factor. One of results shows that asymmetric trapezoidal fin length is shorter than symmetric trapezoidal fin length (i.e., asymmetric trapezoidal fin volume is smaller than symmetric trapezoidal fin volume) for the same heat loss when the fin base height and fin shape factor are the same.

An experimental study is performed to investigate the characteristics of vortex shedding behind a circular cylinder with serrated fins using hot-wire anemometer. Strouhal numbers which are calculated using outer diameter of a circular cylinder with serrated fins are higher than that of a circular cylinder. Fin thickness and pitch are closely related with vortex shedding frequency and play increasing or decreasing vortex shedding after transient Reynolds number. Strouhal numbers using effective diameters which are proposed in this paper agree with that of a circular cylinder. After transient Reynolds number, a trend of Strouhal number can be estimated by checking the ratio of effective diameter to inner diameter.
The characteristics of heat transfer and pressure drop for fully developed turbulent flow in a tube with circumferential fins and circular were experimentally studied. The various spacing and sizes of circumferential fins and circular disks were selected as design parameters, while the effects of these parameters on heat transfer enhancement and pressure drop were investigated. In order to quantify the effect of heat transfer enhancement and the increase of pressure drop due to the fins and disks in a tube, the Nusselt numbers and the friction factors for various configurations and operating conditions were compared to those for a corresponding smooth tube. The results showed that the heat transfer rate was significantly enhanced by increasing the height of circumferential fins and decreasing the pitch of circumferential fins. On the other hand, the influence of the disk size and the fin-disk spacing were not significant. Based on the experimental results, a correlation for estimating the Nusselt number was suggested.
