Experimental and discrete element method were used to investigate the effects of joint number and its angularities on the shear behaviour of joint's bridge area. A new shear test condition was used to model the gypsum cracks under shear loading. Gypsum samples with dimension of 120 mm×100 mm×50 mm were prepared. the length of joints was 2cm. in experimental tests, the joint number is 1, 2 and 3 and its angularities change from 0° to 90° with increment of 45°. Assuming a plane strain condition, special rectangular models are prepared with dimension of 120 mm×100 mm. similar to joints configuration in experimental test, 9 models with different joint number and joint angularities were prepared. This testing show that the failure process is mostly governed by the joint number and joint angularities. The shear strengths of the specimens are related to the fracture pattern and failure mechanism of the discontinuities. The shear behaviour of discontinuities is related to the number of induced tensile cracks which are increased by increasing the rock bridge length. The strength of samples decreases by increasing the joint number and joint angularities. Failure pattern and failure strength are similar in both of the experimental test and numerical simulation.
Objective: The aim of this study was to provide a method to improve the compliance and reduce the time by reducing the workload during the model change work. Background: The enterprises are constructing the small quantity batch production system by increasing the number of model change and reducing model-changing. However, the compliance is low because the work is strenuous and high skills are needed, so the system management is facing with many difficulties. Method: After classifying the model change work according to the purposes(preparation, change and adjustment) with the target of mascara filling machine, element tasks time were measured and the motion analysis(therblig symbol) and REBA analysis were performed. The study incorporated 3 independent variables as the number of motion, REBA score and the element time. The dependent variable is the type of element work as preparation, change and adjustment. The statistical test was performed by one-way ANOVA(${\alpha}$ < 0.05). Results: For the preparation, the number of motions appeared in the order of Use(U), Transport Loaded(TL), and Position(P). The order appeared in change is Use(U), Release Load(RL), and Grasp (G). The adjustment appeared in the order of Position(P) and Use(U). The results of average motion time as the element work times divided by the number of motion appeared in the order of adjustment(1.85sec/motion), preparation(1.11sec/motion), and change(0.62sec/motion). The results of REBA showed that the average risk level of change and adjustment were medium, but 53.1% of change and 42.9% of adjustment were evaluated as high. Conclusion: Reducing the avoidance and improving the compliance of work could be expected if the job autonomy were improved by improving the working postures with high risk level. Application: It is expected to solve the problem of reducing the time of model change work in the small quantity batch production system. The future work is to carry out the improvement directions found in the results and compare the results after improvement.

The present research presents experimental and finite element studies to investigate the behavior of piled raft-tunnel system in a sandy soil. In the experimental work, a small scale model was tested in a sand box with load applied vertically to the raft through a hydraulic jack. Five configurations of piles were tested in the laboratory. The effects of pile length (L), number of piles in the group and the clearance distance between pile tip and top of tunnel surface (H) on the load carrying capacity of the piled raft-tunnel system are investigated. The load sharing percent between piles and rafts are included in the load-settlement presentation. The experimental work on piled raft-tunnel system yielded that all piles in the group carry the same fraction of load. The load carrying capacity of the piled raft-tunnel model was increased with increasing (L) for variable (H) distances and decreased with increasing (H) for constant pile lengths. The total load carrying capacity of the piled raft-tunnel model decreases with decreasing number of piles in the group. The total load carrying capacity of the piles relative to the total applied load (piles share) increases with increasing (L) and the number of piles in the group. The increase in (L/H) ratio for variable (H) distance and number of piles leads to an increase in piles share. ANSYS finite element program is used to model and analyze the piled raft-tunnel system. A three dimensional analysis with elastoplastic soil model is carried out. The obtained results revealed that the finite element method and the experimental modeling are rationally agreed.
This paper describes the results of cold flow test and hot firing tests of an uni-element coaxial swirl injector and hot firing tests of a subscale combustor, as to the development effort of coaxial swirl injector for high performance liquid rocket engine combustor. A major design parameter for coaxial swirl injector is the recess number of a bi-swirl injector. The results of hot firing tests of the uni-element injector combustor and the sub-scale combustor are analyzed to investigate the effect of the recess number influencing on the combustion performance and pressure fluctuation. The test results of a cold flow test of the unielement combustor shows that it was shown that the change in recess number has significant effect on mixing characteristics and efficiency, while the effect of recess number on atomization characteristic is not The results of a series of firing tests using unielement and subscale combustor show that the recess length significantly affects the hydraulic characteristics, the combustion efficiency, and the dynamics of the liquid oxygen/kerosene bi-swirl injector. As a point of combustion performance, combustion efficiencies are 90% for unielement combustor and 95% for subscale combustor. The difference in the characteristic velocities between the unielement combustor and the subscale combustor may be caused by the difference in thermal loss to the combustor wall and the relative lengths of the combustion chamber. For a mixed type coaxial swirl combustor, the pressure drop across the injector increases as recess number becomes larger. The low frequency pressure fluctuation observed in unielement combustor can be related to the propellant mixing characteristics of the coaxial bi-swirl injector. The effect of the recess number on the pressure fluctuation inside the combustion chamber is more significant in un i-element combustor than the subscale combustor, of which the phenomena are also observed in time domain and frequency domain.
Despite of the development in the finite element method, it is difficult to get the finite element model describing the dynamic characteristics of the complex structure exactly. Therefore a number of different methods have been developed in order to update the finite element model of a structure using vibration test data. This paper outlines the basic formulation for the frequency response function based updating method. One important advantage of this method is that the intermediate step of performing an eigensolution extraction is unnecessary. Using simulated experimental data, studies are conducted in the case of 10 DOF discrete system. The solution of noisy and incomplete experimental data is discussed. True measured frequency response function data are used for updating the finite element model of a beam and a plate. Its applicability to the joint identification is also considered.
Structural analysis remains as an essential part of any integrated civil engineering system in today's rapidly changing computing environment. Even with enormous advancements in capabilities of computers and mobile tools, enhancing computational efficiency of algorithms is necessary to meet the changing demands for quick real time response systems. The finite element method is still the most widely used method of computational structural analysis; a robust, reliable and automated finite element structural analysis module is essential in a modern integrated structural engineering system. To be a part of an automated finite element structural analysis, an efficient adaptive mesh generation scheme based on R-H refinement for the mesh and error estimates from representative strain values at Gauss points is described. A coefficient that depends on the shape of element is used to correct overly distorted elements. Two simple case studies show the validity and computational efficiency. The scheme is appropriate for nonlinear and dynamic problems in earthquake engineering which generally require a huge number of iterative computations.
This work presents an iterative mesh partitioning approach to improve the efficiency of parallel substructure finite element computations. The proposed approach employs an iterative strategy with a set of empirical rules derived from the results of numerical experiments on a number of different finite element meshes. The proposed approach also utilizes state-of-the-art partitioning techniques in its iterative partitioning kernel, a cost function to estimate the computational cost of each submesh, and a mechanism that adjusts element weights to redistribute elements among submeshes during iterative partitioning to partition a mesh into submeshes (or substructures) with balanced computational workloads. In addition, actual parallel finite element structural analyses on several test examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach proposed herein. The results show that the proposed approach can effectively improve the efficiency of parallel substructure finite element computations.
The use of frequency-dependent spectral element matrix (or exact dynamic stiffness matrix) in structural dynamics may provide very accurate solutions, together with drastically reducing the number of degrees of freedom to improve the computation efficiency and cost problems. Thus, this paper develops a spectral element model for the coupled thermoelastic beam which axially moves with constant speed under a uniform tension. The accuracy of the spectral element model is then evaluated by comparing the natural frequencies obtained by the present element model with those obtained by the conventional finite element model.
Free vibration analysis of helical springs was performed by the use of the commercial finite element analysis program, ANSYS. The investigation of national frequency was focused on the effect of various parameters such as boundary conditions, spring indices, number of coil turns and helix angles which are considered to affect the free vibration of a spring. The finite element method was validated by comparison with the result of a previouosly published literature. The similarity of frequency trend was shown among three boundary conditions: clamped-clamped, free-free, simpliy supported-simply supported but there was no similarity in light of mode shapes among them. Several modes showed similar frequencies on and near the frequencies identified by the natural frequency formula of Wahl. Natural frequencies increased with spring indices and number of turns decreasing and with helix angles increasing. The results investigated by finiete element method were compared with the experemental result and theoretical result and showed a good agreement among them.
The dynamic response characteristics of a floating ocean city are examined for presenting the basic data for the design of huge offshore structures supported by a large number of floating bodies in waves. The numerical approach which is accurate in linear system is based on combination of a three dimensional source distribution method, wave interaction theory and the finite element method of using the space frame element. The hydrodynamic interactions among the floating bodies are taken into account in their exact form within the context of linear potential theory in the motion and structural analysis. The method is applicable to an arbitrary number of three dimensional bodies having any individual body geometries and geometrical arrangement with the restriction that the circumscribed, bottom-mounted. Imaginary vertical cylinder for each body does not contain any part of the other body. The validity of this procedure was verified by comparing with experimental results obtained in the literature.
