A Study on the Comparison and Analysis of School Mathematics Curriculum in the State of Georgia and Korea (미국 조지아주와 우리나라 수학과 교육과정 비교 분석 연구 - 수와 연산 및 대수 영역을 중심으로 -)

  • This study investigated school mathematics curriculum of the State of Georgia in the United States focused on the 'number and operation' and 'algebra' domain. On the basis of its understanding, this domain was compared and analyzed with school mathematics curriculum of Korea. In doing so, this study explored its plans and procedures and established a frame of comparison for the curriculums between the two countries. The most noticeable difference between the former and the new curriculum in mathematics for Georgia schools is the use of performance standards. A performance standard has four components: a content standard, illustrative tasks, examples of student work, and a commentary for teachers. This study focuses on the content standard and according to the results of the present study, Korea focuses on the formal and systematic mathematical knowledge on the basis of sound understanding of certain mathematical terms or concepts. On the other hand, the State of Georgia curriculum tends to deal with the content which can be understood more intuitively, flexibly, and naturally through the experience, aquisition, and furthermore interpretation based on the concrete manipulation and technological devices.

International Achievement in Mathematics Content Areas Based on TIMSS 2003 (TIMSS 2003의 내용 영역별 수학 성취도 국제 비교)

  • This study presents results by the content areas in mathematics. Average performance is provided for five content areas: number, algebra, measurement, geometry, and data. Relative achievement is shown among the content areas for 4 countries in comparison to Korea. In number, Korea had lower average achievement than Singapore, especially for ratio proportion percent. Among 5 countries, Korea had the highest average achievement in algebra and geometry, but the lowest in attributes and units of measurement. In data, Korean students didn't learn the followings successfully: a) comparing characteristics of data sets and using mean, median, range, and shape of distribution, b) interpreting data sets (e.g., draw conclusions, make predictions, and estimate values between and beyond given data points), c) evaluating interpretations of data with respect to correctness and completeness of interpretation.

  • Current encryption methods have been applied to secure communication using discrete chaotic system whose output is a noise-like signal which differs from the conventional encryption methods that employ algebra and number theory[1-2] We propose an optical encryption method that transforms the primary pattern into the image pattern of discrete chaotic function first a primary pattern is encoded using permutation algorithm, In the proposed system we suggest the permutation algorithm using the output of key steam generator and its security level is analyzed. In this paper we worked out problem of the application about few discrete chaos function through a permutation algorithm and enhanced the security level. Experimental results with image signal demonstrate the proper of the implemented optical encryption system.

  • The sum-of-product type MVL (Multiple-valued logic) functions can be directly transformed into the exclusive-sum-of-literal-product(ESOLP) type MVL functions with a substitution of the OR operator with the exclusive-OR(XOR) operator. This paper presents an algorithm that can reduce the number of minterms for the purpose of minimizing the hardware size and the complexity of the circuit in the realization of ESOLP-type MVL functions. In Boolean algebra, the joinable true minterms can form the cube, and if some cubes form a cube-chain with adjacent cubes by the insertion of false cubes(or, false minterms), then the created cube-chain can become a large cube which includes previous cubes. As a result of the cube grouping, the number of minterms can be reduced artificially. Since ESOLP-type MVL functions take the MIN/XOR structure, a XOR circuit and a four-valued MIN/XOR dynamic-CMOS PLA circuit is designed for the realization of the minimized functions, and PSPICE simulation results have been also presented for the validation of the proposed algorithm.

  • This study investigates the concept of irrational number which middle school students begin to learn for the first time in their learning mathematics. Further, this explores how that concept is being taught, how much students understand that concept and things that students have difficulty in understanding relating to the concept of irrational number. Thus we try to figure out how the concept of irrational number should be taught for the most effective students' understanding. Thus, we want to provide some suggestions for teaching and learning irrationals numbers.

  • In this paper, we study the Lie-generalized Fibonacci sequence and the root system of rank 2 symmetric hyperbolic Kac-Moody algebras. We derive several interesting properties of the Lie-Fibonacci sequence and relationship between them. We also give a couple of sufficient conditions for the existence of the integral points on the hyperbola $\mathfrak{h}^a:x^2-axy+y^2=1$ and $\mathfrak{h}_k:x^2-axy+y^2=-k$ ($k{\in}\mathbb{Z}_{>0}$). To list all the integral points on that hyperbola, we find the number of elements of ${\Omega}_k$.

  • A program is developed for generations the dynamic equations for robotic manipulators using the symbolic language muSIMP/MATH. The muSIMP/MATH is a LISP-based computer algebra package, devoted to the manipulation of algebraic expressions including number, variables, functions, and matrix. The muSIMP/MATH can operate on IBM-PC compatibles with MS-DOS. The program is developed, on the e formalism. This is program is applicable to the manipulators of any number of degrees of freedom, maximum six degree of freedom in this program. To control robotic manipulators by using dynamic equation is required a symbolic equations. The generated dynamic equation can be applied directly to the robotic manipulators, for the generated dynamic equation is a reduced form of symbolic expression.

  • A program is developed for generating the dynamic equations for the robotic manipulators using the symbolic language muSIMP/ MATH. The muSIMP-MATH can operate on personal computer such as IBM-PC. The program is developed, based on the Lagrange-Euler formulation. This program is applicable to the manipulators with any number of degrees of freedom, and maximum number of degrees of freedom is set to be six in this program.

  • A number of process algebras have been proposed to develop distributed mobile real-time systems: pi-Calculus, Mobile Ambients Calculus, Bigraph, etc. However, as the systems get large and complex, the algebras become less suitable for understanding the interactions and mobility of the processes of the systems due to the size and complexity. Therefore it is necessary to handle the size and complexity for systematic understanding of the systems. This paper handles the size and complexity with a method of abstraction on sequences of interactions and movements of processes in the systems, which can be further organized in the form of hierarchically structured lattices, namely, Prism. The theoretical principle of the abstraction is based on a new concept of Behavior Ontology, which is extended from Active ontology. Prism allows the systems to be analyzed in the perspective of the lattices in Prism, which are characterized by the hierarchically organized behavioral properties of the developing systems, for systematic understanding the systems. In this way, the complexity of the interactions and the movements can be handled systematically in the semantically and hierarchically organized structure of the behavior.

Root Test for Plane Polynomial Pythagorean Hodograph Curves and It's Application (평면 다항식 PH 곡선에 대한 근을 이용한 판정법과 그 응용)

  • Using the complex formulation of plane curves which R. T. Farouki introduced, we can identify any plane polynomial curve with only a polynomial with complex coefficients. In this paper, using the well-known fundamental theorem of algebra, we completely factorize the polynomial over the complex number field C and from the completely factorized form of the polynomial, we find a new necessary and sufficient condition for a plane polynomial curve to be a Pythagorean-hodograph curve, obseving the set of all roots of the complex polynomial corresponding to the plane polynomial curve. Applying this method to space polynomial curves in the three dimensional Minkowski space $R^{2,1}$, we also find the necessary and sufficient condition for a polynomial curve in $R^{2,1}$ to be a PH curve in a new finer form and characterize all possible curves completely.
