  • There are many problems in evaluating study results by p value in null hypothesis testing for dental research. It is a logical fallacy to conclude that the null hypothesis is true when the it is not rejected. There are much serious misunderstanding about p value, and researchers should be cautious about interpreting p value in writing papers. As alternatives to complement or replace the null hypothesis significance testing, effect size, confidence interval, and Bayesian statistics are introduced.

  • The null lens is designed for testing the elliptical (conic constant>O) mirror which is the third mirror of the off-axis Three Mirror Anastigmat (TMA) designed as a high resolution camera for remote sensing. The mixed type design is proposed as a new design type which has a small annular flat mirror, but has as twice sensitivity as the autostigmatic type design. It is also shown that the null lens of the Mixed type is better than that of the autostigmatic type in terms of the sensitivity of the wavefront distortion which is given as the magnitude of optical path difference with respect to the change of each surface parameters such as the radius of curvature, thickness of lenses and tested mirror.

  • A null lens is designed for testing the hyperbolic mirror which is the first mirror of the off-axis three mirror anastigmat(TMA) designed as a high resolution camera for remote sensing. To choose a better null lens system for the hyperbolic surface under test, both autostigmatic and mixed type null lenses are designed and analysed for sensitivity with respect to change of each surface parameter such as the radius of curvature and the thickness.

  • We consider estimating the proportion of true null hypotheses in multiple testing problems. A traditional multiple testing rate, family-wise error rate is too conservative and old to control type I error in multiple testing setups; however, false discovery rate (FDR) has received significant attention in many research areas such as GWAS data, FMRI data, and signal processing. Identify differentially expressed genes in microarray studies involves estimating the proportion of true null hypotheses in FDR procedures. However, we need to account for unknown dependence structures among genes in microarray data in order to estimate the proportion of true null hypothesis since the genuine dependence structure of microarray data is unknown. We compare various procedures in simulation data and real microarray data. We consider a hidden Markov model for simulated data with dependency. Cai procedure (2007) and a sliding linear model procedure (2011) have a relatively smaller bias and standard errors, being more proper for estimating the proportion of true null hypotheses in simulated data under various setups. Real data analysis shows that 5 estimation procedures among 9 procedures have almost similar values of the estimated proportion of true null hypotheses in microarray data.

  • In this paper, a novel full-aperture reflective null measuring method is proposed to detect the transmission wavefront of a conformal dome surface. An aspheric compensator is designed and placed behind the dome to reflect the aspheric testing wave back to the same path. To ensure the feasibility of this method, tolerance analysis is conducted, and guidance to assembly is given accordingly. The accuracy of this method is verified to be λ/30 (λ =3.39 μm) by Monte Carlo algorithm. In addition, the influence of different error factors, including the thickness error and decenter error of the dome, on the testing wavefront is analyzed. Simulation and experiment indicate that this method is practical and simple, and can measure the conformal domes precisely and comprehensively.

  • The problem of trend change in the mean residual life is great Interest in the reliability and survival analysis. In this paper, a new test statistic for testing whether or not the mean residual life changes its trend Is developed. It is assumed that neither the change point nor the proportion at which the trend change occurs is known. The asymptotic null distribution of test statistic is established and asymptotic critical values of the asymptotic null distribution is obtained. Monte Carlo simulation is used to compare the proposed test with previously known tests.

  • In this paper, asymptotic expansions of the distribution of the likelihood ratio statistic for testing multisample sphericity have been derived in the null and nonnull cases when the alternatives are close to the null hypothesis. These expansions are obtained in the form of series of data distributions.

  • When interactions are not present in a three-way layout, the lim-iting null distribution of the F statistic for testing main effects when applied to the rank-score transformed data is the same as the limiting null distribution of the usual F statistic when applied to the normal data. The simulation results exhibit that the rank transform test is robust with respect to significance level and powerful for testing main effects in a three-way factorial experiment.

  • When one fits a parametric density function to a data set, it is usually advisable to test the goodness of the postulated model. In this paper we study the nonparametric tests for testing the null hypothesis against general alternatives, when the null hypothesis specifies the density function up to unknown parameters. We modify the test statistic which was proposed by the first author and his colleagues. Asymptotic distribution of the modified statistic is derived and its performance is compared with some other tests through simulation.
